On environmental threats to male infertility

The possibility that environmental pollutants damage human fertility is a topic of both public concern and scientific interest. The effect of environmental factors on male fertility （semen parameters） has been a special focus, stimulated in part by the dramatic damage inflicted by the pcstlcide DBCP on testicular function. Extensive searches for testicular toxicants （in particular, the proposed effects of endocrine-disrupting compounds through fetal exposure） have produced little hard evidence of impairment in humans. This scarcity of evidence may reflect the difficultles of studying human fertility. Future fertifity studies should consider the wide spectrum of environmental exposures that plausibly affect reproduction.

The Archean Eon was a time of geodynamic *** evidence of these transitions come from igneous/metaigneous rocks,which dominate cratonic segments *** data for granitoids from an Archean basement inlier related to the Southern S?o Francisco Craton(SSFC),are integrated with geochronological,isotopic and geochemical data on Archean granitoids from the *** rocks are divided into three main geochemical groups with different ages:(1)TTG(3.02–2.77 Ga);(2)mediumto high-K granitoids(2.85–2.72 Ga);and(3)A-type granites(2.7–2.6 Ga).The j.venile to chondritic(Hf-Nd isotopes)TTG were divided into two sub-groups,TTG 1(low-HREE)and 2(high-HREE),derived from partial melting of metamafic rocks similar to those from adj.cent greenstone *** compositional diversity within the TTG is attributed to different pressures during partial melting,supported by a positive correlation of Dy/Yb and Sr/Zr,and batch melting *** proposed TTG sources are geochemically similar to basaltic rocks from modern island-arcs,indicating the presence of subduction processes concomitant with TTG ***~2.85 Ga to 2.70 Ga,the dominant rocks were K-rich *** are modeled as crustal melts of TTG,during regional metamorphism indicative of crustal *** compositional diversity is linked to:(i)differences in source composition;(ii)distinct melt fractions during partial melting;and(iii)different residual mineralogies reflecting varying P–T ***-collisional(~2.7–2.6 Ga)A-type granites reflect rifting in that they were closely followed by extension-related dyke swarms,and they are interpreted as differentiation or partial melting products of magmas derived from subduction-modified *** sequence of granitoid emplacement indicates subduction-related magmatism was followed by crustal thickening,regional metamorphism and crustal melting,and post-collisional extension,similar to that seen in younger Wilson *** is compelling evide

Comparison of ultrasound-measured properties of the common carotid artery to tobacco smoke exposure in a cohort of Indonesian patients

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to use point-of-care ultrasound(POCUS) to investigate the relationship between tobacco smoke exposure and the characteristics of the common carotid artery(CCA). The effect of both primary and secondary smoking on CCA properties was ***: We performed a prospective cross-sectional study across 20 primary care clinics in Bandung, West j.va, Indonesia in j.ly 2016. Point of care ultrasound was performed on a convenience sample of Indonesian patients presenting to clinic. The CCA wall stiffness and carotid intima-media thickness(CIMT) were measured during diastole and systole. These measurements were correlated with smoke exposure and cardiovascular ***: We enrolled 663 patients in the study, with 426 patients enrolled in the smoking category and 237 patients enrolled in the second-hand smoke category. There was an overall positive correlation with the measured lifestyle factors and the ultrasound-measured variables in the group of individuals who smoked. For all variables, age seemed to contribute the most out of all of the lifestyle factors for the positive changes in CIMT and CCA wall ***: Our data yielded correlations between CCA properties and cardiovascular risk, as well as between CIMT and arterial stiffness. We were also able to demonstrate an increase in thickness of the CIMT in patients who have been exposed by tobacco through the use of ultrasound. Further large scale studies comparing patients with multiple cardiac risk factors need to be performed to confi rm the utility of ultrasound fi ndings of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Point-of-care molecular diagnostic tests show great promise for providing accurate,timely results in lowinfrastructure healthcare settings and at *** design space for these tests is limited by a variety of possible background reactions,which often originate from relatively weak promiscuous activities of the enzymes used for nucleic acid *** this background signal is amplified alongside the signal of the intended biomarker,the dynamic range of the test can be severely ***,a detailed knowledge of potential side reactions arising from enzyme promiscuity can improve rational design of point-of-care molecular diagnostic *** this end,we report a previously unknown synergistic reaction between T7 RNA polymerase and Bsu DNA polymerase that produces nucleic acid in the presence of single-stranded DNA or *** reaction occurs in the absence of any previously reported substrates for either polymerases and compromises a theoretical microRNA amplification scheme utilizing these polymerases.

Probability of a zoonotic spillover with seasonal variation

Zoonotic infectious diseases are spread from animals to *** is estimated that over 60%of human infectious diseases are zoonotic and 75%of them are emerging *** maj.rity of emerging zoonotic infectious diseases are caused by viruses including avian influenza,rabies,Ebola,coronaviruses and *** of infection from animals to humans depends on a complex transmission pathway,which is influenced by epidemiological and environmental *** this investigation,the focus is on direct transmission between animals and humans and the effects of seasonal variations on the transmission and recovery *** in transmission and recovery,besides being influenced by physiological processes and behaviors of pathogen and host,are driven by seasonal variations in temperature,humidity or rainfall.A new time-nonhomogeneous stochastic process is formulated for infectious disease spread from animals to humans when transmission and recovery rates are time-periodic.A branching process approximation is applied near the disease-free state to predict the probability of the first spillover event from animals to *** probability is a periodic function of the time when infection is introduced into the animal *** is shown that the highest risk of a spillover depends on a combination of animal to human transmission,animal to animal transmission and animal *** results are applied to a stochastic model for avian influenza with spillover from domestic poultry to humans.
