BACKGROUND Lumbar disc herniation and non-specific low back pain are common conditions that seriously affect patients’health-related quality of life(HRQoL).Although empirical evidence has demonstrated that novel Thermobalancing therapy and Dr allen’s Device can relieve chronic low back pain,there have been no randomised controlled trials for these *** To evaluate the efficacy of Dr allen’s Device in lumbar disc herniation(LDH)and non-specific low back pain(NSLBP).METHODS A randomised clinical trial was conducted investigating 55 patients with chronic low back pain due to LDH(n=28)or NSLBP(n=27),out of which 15 were randomly assigned to the control group and 40 were assigned to the treatment *** intervention was treatment with Dr allen’s Device for 3 *** in HRQoL were assessed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale and the Japanese Orthopedic Association Back Pain *** Thermobalancing therapy with Dr allen’s Device showed a significant reduction in pain in the treatment group(Pallen’s Device for Low Back Treatment relieves chronic low back pain significantly and without adverse effects,improves the level of activity and HRQoL among patients with LDH and *** study demonstrates the importance of this safe first-line therapy that can be used for effective at-home management of chronic low back pain.

Ensuring highway safety relies heavily on pavement friction resistance. To enable network-level pavement skid resistance monitoring and management， this study proposes a non-contact three-dimensional laser surface testing method to obtain detailed aggregate surface data. The existing contact-based skid resistance measurement methods suffer from poor reproducibility and repeatability， hindering their application for network-level management. In this research， traditional multiple linear regression and four machine learning methods—support vector machine (SVM)， random forest (RF)， gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT)， and convolutional neural network (CNN)—are utilized to evaluate and predict pavement frictional performance. To assess the proposed methods， data from 45 pavement sites in Oklahoma， including 6 major preventive maintenance (PM) treatments and 7 typical types of aggregates， are collected. Parallel data acquisition is conducted at highway speeds using a grip tester and a high-speed texture profiler to measure pavement skid resistance and surface macro-texture， respectively. Aggregate properties are captured in 3D using a portable ultra-high-resolution 3D laser imaging scanner， leading to the calculation of four types of 3D aggregate parameters characterizing the micro-texture of aggregate surfaces. The relationship between pavement surface friction and texture is explored using machine learning models. The results reveal that the random forest and gradient boosting decision tree models exhibit the highest accuracy， SVM and CNN perform moderately， while the traditional linear regression method fares the worst. By assessing the importance of the 38 parameter variables， the most critical 21 variables were selected for model development. Test results demonstrate that the GBDT model exhibits the best predictive performance， with an explanatory capability of 87.4% for road friction performance. The ballistics equations for spherical pellets in free flight are simplified through appropriate scaling of the pellet velocity and pellet distance. Two different drag coefficient curves are averaged to yield a single curve applicable to shot pellets and round balls. The resulting S-shaped drag coefficient curve is approximated by three straight-line segments. The scaled ballistics equations are then solved exactly and simple formulas are found for the velocity and flight time with respect to trajectory distance. The formulas are applicable to spherical shot pellets and round balls of any composition under any atmospheric conditions. The formulas are amenable to quick and easy computation and may also serve as an aid in understanding and comparing black-box ballistics calculators. For shotshell ballistics, an important assumption in the present investigation is that the pellets are moving as single, free spheres and not as a dense cloud or in a shot column, in particular, the pellets are not interacting during flight. Therefore, the formulas are most appropriate for single round balls, for large shot sizes, and for pellets of small shot size fired from open chokes. The formulas are clear and accessible, and can be implemented by military or law enforcement personnel as well as hunters and shooters. This work differs from previous investigations in that accurate ballistics formulas are derived for spherical projectiles of shotguns and muzzleloaders using realistic drag coefficients.

In Houston, a combination of urban emissions from a city of 4 million people, coupled with emissions from extensive petroleum refining and chemical manufacturing, leads to conditions for photochemistry that are unique in the United States, and historically, the city had experienced some of the highest ozone concentrations recorded in the United States. Large air quality field studies （the Texas Air Quality Studies or TexAQS I and II） were conducted to determine root causes of the high ozone concentrations. Hundreds of air quality investigators, from around the world, deployed instruments on aircraft, on ships, and at fixed ground sites to make extensive air quality measurements; detailed photochemical modeling was used to interpret and assess the implications of the measurements. The Texas Air Quality Studies revealed that both continuous and episodic emissions of light alkenes, which came to be called highly reactive volatile organic compounds, played a critical role in the formation of ozone and other photochemical oxidants in the region. Under- standing and quantifying the role of these emissions in regional air quality required innovations in characterizing emissions and in photochemical modeling. Reducing emissions required innovative policy approaches. These coupled scientific and policy innovations are described, and the result, substantially cleaner air for Houston, is documented. The lessons learned from the Houston air quality experience are relevant to cities with similar population and industrial profiles around the world.
