New risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes

This paper presents a new risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes. This new empirical-statistical *** assessment m. ethodology （SSAM! is intended for use by geotechnical engineers at both the design review and operational stages of a mine＇s life to categonse the risk of an excavated coal mine slope. A likelihood of failure is determined using a new slope stability classification system for excavated coal mine slopes developed using a database of 119 intact and failed case studies sourced from open cut coal mines in Australia. Consequence of failure is based on slope height and stand-off distance at the toe of the excavated slope. Results are presented in a new risk matrix, with slope risk being divided into low, medium and high categories. The SSAM is put forward as a new risk assess- ment methodology to assess the potential for, and consequence of, excavated coal mine slope failure. Unlike existing classification systems, assumptions about the likely failure mode or mechanism are not required. Instead, the SSAM applies an approach which compares the conditions present within the exca- vated slope face, with the known past performance of slopes with similar geotechnical and geometrical conditions, to estimate the slope＇s propensity for failure. The SSAM is novel in that it considers the depo- sitional history of strata in an excavated slope and how this sequence affects slope stability. It is further novel in that it does not require explicit measurements of intact rock, rock mass and/or defect strength to rapidly calculate a slope＇s likelihood of failure and overall risk. Ratings can be determined entirely from visual observations of the excavated slope face. The new SSAM is designed to be used in conjunction with existing slope stability assessment tools.

The causes of population differentiation can provide insight into the origins of early barriers to gene flow. Two key drivers of population differentiation are geographic distance and local adaptation to divergent selective environments. When reproductive isolation arises because some populations of a species are under selection to avoid hybridization while others are not, population differentiation and even speciation can result. Spadefoot toad populations Spea multiplicata that are sympatric with a congener have undergone reinforcement. This reinforcement has resulted not only in increased reproductive isolation from the congener, but also in the evolution of reproductive isolation from nearby and distant conspecific allopatric populations. We used multiple approaches to evaluate the contributions of geographic distance and divergent selective environments to population structure across this regional scale in S. multiplicata, based on genotypes from six nuclear microsatellite markers. We compared groups of populations varying in both geographic location and in the presence of a congener. Hierarchical F-statistics and results from cluster analyses and discriminant analyses of principal components all indicate that geographic distance is the stronger contributor to genetic differentiation among S. multiplicata populations at a regional scale. However, we found evidence that adaptation to divergent selective environments also contributes to population structure. Our findings highlight how variation in the balance of evolutionary forces acting across a species＇ range can lead to variation in the relative contributions of geographic distance and local adaptation to population differentiation across different spatial scales.

AIM To investigate and summarise the current evidence surrounding management of Bouveret's syndrome(BS).METHODS A MEDLINE search was performed for the BS. The search was conducted independently by two clinicians(Yahya ALHabbal and Matthew Ng) in April 2016. A case of BS is also *** A total of 315 articles, published from 1967 to 2016, were found. For a clinically meaningful clinical review, articles published before 01/01/1990 and were excluded, leaving 235 unique articles to review. Twenty-seven articles were not available(neither by direct communication nor through inter-library transfer). These were also excluded. The final number of articles reviewed was 208. There were 161 case reports, 13 reviews, 23 images(radiological and clinical images), and 11 letters to editor. Female to male ratio was 1.82. Mean age was 74 years. Treatment modalities included laparotomy in the majority of cases, laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic surgery and shockwave *** There is limited evidence in the literature about the appropriate approach. We suggest an algorithm for management of BS.

Neuroscientists have recognized the importance of astrocytes in regulating neurological function and their influence on the release of glial *** studies,however,have focused on the effects of general anesthetic agents on neuroglia or *** can also be an important target of general anesthetic agents as they exert not only sedative,analgesic,and amnesic effects but also mediate general anesthetic-induced neurotoxicity and postoperative cognitive ***,we analyzed recent advances in understanding the mechanism of general anesthetic agents on astrocytes,and found that exposure to general anesthetic agents will destroy the morphology and proliferation of astrocytes,in addition to acting on the receptors on their surface,which not only affect Ca^(2+)signaling,inhibit the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and lactate from astrocytes,but are even involved in the regulation of the pro-and anti-inflammatory processes of *** would obviously affect the communication between astrocytes as well as between astrocytes and neighboring neurons,other neuroglia,and vascular *** this review,we summarize how general anesthetic agents act on neurons via astrocytes,and explore potential mechanisms of action of general anesthetic agents on the nervous *** hope that this review will provide a new direction for mitigating the neurotoxicity of general anesthetic agents.

The Effects of Low Dose Sertraline on Blood Pressure in Patients with Hypertension and Panic Disorder: A Pilot Study

Objective: In this pilot study, given the prevalence of hypertension and panic disorder as described in the literature, we proposed to fill the gaps in the literature on the possible utility of SSRI medication as an adjunct treatment in individuals with panic disorder and hypertension. Methods: We planned to only recruit patients with panic disorder who fit the criteria independently for treatment with SSRI;i.e. treatment would be given based on clinical need and currently accepted Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) criteria. Thereafter, we would monitor their BP at baseline, 14 days and 28 days to determine if there has been an effect on the individual’s BP. Results: Based on the observation above, there may be a trend of a reduction in systolic and diastolic BP after the commencement of sertraline. Conclusion: In order to confirm this observation, a larger sample size is required in the future. This pilot study proposed to meet the objectives as listed below;however due to difficulty with recruitment, only 2 out of 4 participants will be discussed in the analysis.
