Under.tanding for.ging str.tegies of bir.s is essential to under.tanding mechanisms of their.community assembly. To pr.vide such infor.ation on a key Southeast Asian r.infor.st family, the babbler. （Timaliidae）, we evaluated for.ging behavior.and abundance in 7 mor.hologically and behavior.lly similar.sympatr.c species （Cyanoder.a er.thr.pter.m, C. r.fifr.ns, Stachyr.s maculata, S. nigr.collis, S. poliocephala, Macr.nus ptilosus, and Mixor.is gular.s） in 5 habitats defined by str.ctur.l complexity：（1） continuous native r.infor.st, （2） logged native r.infor.st fr.gments, （3） matur. industr.al tr.e plantation, （4） young industr.al plantation, and （5） oil palm plantation. Enough data wer. obtained to compar. abundance in all 7 species and for.ging behavior.in 5. All species wer. common in for.st fr.gments and matur. industr.al tr.e plantations and less so in continuous r.infor.st and young industr.al plantations; only M. gular.s occur.ed in oil palm. In ter.s of for.ging, M. gular.s was the gr.atest gener.list; C. r.fifr.ns for.ged mainly on live leaves in the for.st midstor.; and S. maculata, C. er.th- r.pter.m, and M. ptilosus for.ged mainly on dead leaves suspended in under.tor. vegetation at sig- nificantly differ.nt heights. The dead-leaf substr.te depends on a r.ch supply of falling leaves and ex- tensive under.tor. str.ctur., conditions most common in native for.st and old industr.al plantations, and less so in matur. for.st, young plantations, and oil palm. Because of the impor.ance of for.ging data to under.tanding and managing biodiver.ity, we encour.ge the development of for.ging fields in eBir. （***）, so that bir.watcher. may help collect these r.latively r.r. data.
