A theorem of Lambrechts and Stanley is used to find the rational cohomology of the complement of an embedding S^(4n-1)→ S^(2n)× S^m as a module and demonstrate that it is not necessarily determined by the map induced on cohomology by the embedding, nor is it a trivial extension. This demonstrates that the theorem is an improvement on the classical Lefschetz duality.

The development of wideband lasing media has deep implications for imaging,sensing,and display *** show that a single chromophore can be engineered to feature wide-gamut fluorescence and lasing throughout the entire visible spectrum and *** exceptional color tuning demonstrates a chemically controlled paradigm for light emission applications with precise color *** such extensive color control requires a molecular blueprint that yields a high quantum efficiency and a high solubility in a wide variety of liquids and solids while featuring a heterocyclic structure with good steric access to the lone pair *** these requirements in mind,we designed a lasing chromophore that encloses a lasing color space twice as large as the sRGb *** record degree of color tuning can in principle be adapted to the solid state by incorporating the chromophore into polymer *** appropriately engineering the base molecular structure,the widest range of lasing wavelengths observed for a conventional gain medium can be achieved,in turn establishing a possible route toward highefficiency light emitters and lasers with near-perfect chromaticity.

Numerous surgical modalities are available to treat adrenal lesions. Minimally-invasive approaches for adrenalectomy are indicated in most circumstances, and new evidence continues to be accumulated. In this context, current indications for open surgical adrenalectomy(OS-A), minimally-invasive adrenalectomy(MI-A), and laparoendoscopic single-site adrenalectomy(LESS-A) remain unclear. A comprehensive Englishlanguage literature review was performed using MEDLINE/Pub MED to identify articles and guidelines pertinent to the surgical management of adrenal tumors. A comprehensive chart review was performed for three illustrative cases. Clinical recommendations were generated based on relevant literature and the expertise of the investigator group. MI-A offers advantages over OS-A in properly selected patients, who experience fewer complications, lower blood loss, and shorter hospital stays. Robot-assisted laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy may offer advantages over transperitoneal surgery, and LESS-A may be an even less-invasive option that will require further evaluation. MI-A remains the surgical treatment of choice for most adrenal lesions. Tumor size and stage are the primary indications for selecting alternative treatment modalities. OS-A remains the gold standard for large tumors(> 10 cm) and suspected or known advanced stage malignancy. LESS-A appears to be an appropriate initial approach for small tumors(< 4-5 cm), including pheochromocytoma and isolated adrenal metastases.

In this study, RLM-RACE was used to identify the transcriptional start site 387 bp upstream of the translational start. Evolutionarily conserved transcription factor binding sites were identified, and a series of luciferase reporter constructs driven by bMPR2 promoter elements used to determine their functional relevance. We found the promoter area from 983 bp to 90 bp upstream of the transcriptional start gave maximal activity, greater than longer constructs, with an area between 570 bp and 290 bp upstream of the transcriptional start containing an important repressor element. To characterize this repressor, we used a combination of EMSA, mutation of the EGR1 binding site, transfection with EGR1 and NAb1 constructs, and mutation of the NAb1 binding site within the EGR1 protein. From this we conclude that EGR1 is essential to bMPR2 transcription, but that NAb1 binding to EGR1 causes it to act as a repressor.

We discuss the crystal,electronic,and magnetic structures of La_(2−x)Sr_(x)CuO_(4)(LSCO)for x=0.0 and x=0.25 employing 13 density functional approximations,representing the local,semi-local,and hybrid exchange-correlation approximations within the Perdew–Schmidt *** meta-generalized gradient approximation(meta-GGA)class of functionals is found to perform well in capturing the key properties of LSCO,a prototypical high-temperature cuprate *** contrast,the localspin-density approximation,GGA,and the hybrid density functional fail to capture the metal-insulator transition under doping.

AIM: To evaluate the associations of serum folate levelwith development, invasiveness and patient survival of gastric cancer. METHODS: In this nested case-control study, patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer undergoing gastrectomy were enrolled, and patients receiving chemotherapy prior to surgery, with other concurrent malignancy, or of the aboriginal and alien populations were excluded. In total, 155 gastric cancer patients and 149 healthy controls were enrolled for determination of serum folate levels and their correlation with gastric cancer. Using the median value of serum folate computed among the overall population as the cutoff value, the associations between serum folate and gastric cancer in all cases and different age and gender subgroups were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. In the patient cohort of gastric cancer, receiver-operating characteristic analyses were performed to calculate the best cutoff values of serum folate, and the associations between serum folate levels and clinicopathological features were further analyzed by multivariate regression analysis. Survival analyses were conducted using the Cox proportional hazards ***: The mean serum folate level was significantly lower in gastric cancer patients than that in controls(3.71 ± 0.30 ng/mL vs 8.00 ± 0.54 ng/mL, P < 0.01), and folate levels were consistently lower in gastric cancer patients regardless of age and gender(all P < 0.01). Using the median serum folate value as the cutoff value, low serum folate was significantly associated with gastric cancer risk in the whole population(OR = 19.77, 95%CI: 10.54-37.06, P < 0.001) and all strata(age < 60 years OR = 17.39, 95%CI: 7.28-41.54, age ≥ 60 years(OR = 21.67, 95%CI: 8.27-56.80), males(OR = 17.95, 95%CI: 7.93-40.62), and females(OR = 20.95, 95%CI: 7.66-57.31); all P < 0.001.
