Feeding Different Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Sources Influences Renal Fatty Acid Composition, Inflammation, and Occurrence of Nephrocalcinosis in Female Sprague-Dawley Rats

The general population is encouraged to increase omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) intake in order to optimize health for preventative health care. Consumers are typically unaware that different amounts, types, and structural forms of n-3 PUFA have different efficacy. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to characterize different sources of n-3 PUFAs and to determine whether consumption of these oils influences renal fatty acid composition and renal health. Lipid classes and fatty acid profile of corn (CO), flaxseed (FO), menhaden (MO), salmon (SO), tuna (TO) or krill (KO) oils were determined by thin-layer and gas chromatography. All dietary oils consisted of >65% triglyceride with the exception of KO. KO and FO also contained phospholipids. FO was rich in the n-3 PUFA, alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) whereas, the marine oils were rich in the long-chain n-3 PUFAs (>18 carbons). Following characterization of the oil sources, female Sprague-Dawley rats (age 28 d) were randomly assigned (n = 10/group) to be fed a high fat 12% (wt) diet consisting of these different oil sources for 8 weeks. Rats fed MO, TO, and SO had significantly higher renal eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) deposition and this in turn, modulated inflammatory responses. Feeding rats MO, SO and TO reduced urinary excretion of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin E2. Feeding rats TO and SO reduced (P ≤ 0.002) nuclear factor kappa B activity and circulating TNFα (P < 0.05). In contrast, rats consuming KO had heavier kidney weights (P < 0.001), total calcium content, and histological evidence of renal calcification and tubulo-interstitial injury. This was due to increased (P < 0.001) urinary phosphorus excretion associated with the phospholipids content of KO. The study results indicated that consumption of n-3 PUFAs influences renal health and the effects varied depending on the n-3 PUFA source consumed.

“Kill-TB” Drug Reminder Mobile Application for Tuberculosis Patients at Bengaluru, India: Effectiveness and Challenges

Background: Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in India. Newer digital technologies for treatment adherence have been tested for diseases with chronic medication. A mobile application (Kill-TB) that provides reminder to TB patients through alarm was tested for its effectiveness and challenges under programmatic settings. Methods: A cohort of TB patients initiated on treatment with and without mobile application at Bangalore city during January-March 2019 was observed for missed doses during their treatment period. Results: A total of 694 patients (347 patients with and without mobile application) were enrolled for the study. Among the patients with and without mobile application 1) loss to follow-up was 2% and 8%, 2) non-adherence rate to TB treatment was 1.5 and 3.3 per 100 person-months, 3) treatment success rate was 89% and 81%. Conclusion: The TB drug reminder mobile application benefits the patient’s treatment adherence and paves way for improved treatment outcomes despite the challenges in implementation. The programme should leverage mobile technologies as an additional monitoring tool to achieve the target of End-TB by 2025.

Preeclampsia is a multisystem disorder that contributes to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent studies show that elevated plasma and erythrocytic malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation, has been documented in women with established preelampsia. This study aimed to observe antioxidant properties of black rice bran on preeclampsia. Level of MDA was measured with TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances). Results showed that black rice bran has antioxidant properties by significantly decreasing MDA in preeclampsia-induced HUVEC. This makes black rice bran a promising agent which can be further used in preeclampsia treatment.

A simple and elegant method to simulate single order reflection profile based on 1-D paracrystalline model has been proposed here. For variety of polymer films this approach has been applied to compute microcrystalline parameters like crystallite size and lattice strain. Other metallic oxide compounds are also analysed using this approach. Employing this model, X-ray diffraction patterns from various polymer samples have been analysed and corresponding microstructure parameters have been reported in this article.

Nanocomposites were prepared by blending soy protein isolate with different percentage of MMT by melt extrusion technique. The nanocomposites were characterized by using, XRD, TEM, SEM and TGA methods. The XRD studies indicated the absence of diffraction peaks for the bio-nanocomposites. From the TEM studies it was ascertained that the degree of exfoliation increased with increase in MMT content. The morphology of the nanocomposites was ascertained from the SEM studies. The degradation pattern of the nano-composites was evaluated from the TG analysis. The drug delivery system of the nanocmposites was investigated by blending the nanocomposites with ofloxacin at different pH media. The various kinetic parameters were evaluated and the mechanism of drug delivery has been postulated based on the kinetic data.

AIM: To study host gene expression and numberof immune cells in liver tissues from patients with fulminant hepatitis E(FH-E).METHODS: Microarray-based expression profiling was done using Illumina Human WG-6_v3_Bead Chip arrays on post-mortem liver tissue from 5 patients with FH-E,and compared with similar tissue from 6 patients with fulminant hepatitis B(FH-B; disease controls) and normal liver tissue from 6 *** expression was defined as ≥ 2.0-fold change with Benjamini-Hochberg false discovery rate below 0.05 using t-test in liver tissue from FH-B and FH-E,than healthy liver *** some genes that showed differential expression in FH-E,microarray data were validated using quantitative reverse transcription *** expressed gene lists were then subjected to "Gene Ontology" analysis for biological processes,and pathway analysis using Bio Carta database on the DAVID *** addition,tissue sections were stained for CD4+,CD8+ and CD56+ cells using indirect immunohistochemistry; cells staining positive for each of these markers were counted and compared between ***: Compared to normal livers,those from patients with FH-E and FH-B showed differential expression of 3377 entities(up-regulated 1703,downregulated 1674) and 2572 entities(up 1164,down 1408),*** included 2142(up 896,down 1246) entities that were common between the two sets; most of these belonged to metabolic,hemostatic and complement pathways,which are active in normal *** expression data from livers of patients with FH-E but not those of FH-B showed activation of several immune response pathways,particularly those involving cytotoxic T *** fold-change values of m RNA for selected genes in livers from FH-E than in normal liver tissue determined using quantitative reverse transcription PCR showed excellent concordance with microarray *** immunohistochemistry,CD8+ T cells showed an increase in liver biopsies from both FH-E [median

Paulownia is a genus of fast-growing and multipurpose tree species that is native to China. Due to their rapid growth and value in the timber market, many Paulownia species are cultivated in several temperate zones worldwide. Economic importance of Paulownia is increasing as new uses and related products are developed. It is also suitable as a lignocellulosic feedstock crop for the bioethanol industry in the Southeastern USA. A number of Paulownia species are valuable sources of secondary metabolites including flavonoids with high antioxidant activities. A high demand for planting material in domestic and international markets for afforestation and bioenergy production has necessitated the development of efficient micropropagation protocols for rapid and mass propagation of Paulownia. Over the past several decades, research on Paulownia species has been conducted to develop micropropagation, somatic embryogenesis and genetic transformation protocols for use in agroforestry and reforestation programs. Given the economic importance and current and potential future uses of Paulownia, this paper reviews the development of biotechnological approaches for plant propagation and genetic improvement, and antioxidant potential of secondary metabolites occurring in species.

Nanocrystalline lithium iron oxide LiFeO2 was synthesized using sol-gel method. Rietveld analysis was performed to confirm the different phases associated in the formation of LiFeO2. Quantitative Rietveld refinement revealed that sample contains: 39.9 wt% of cubic α – LiFeO2 phase, 58.5 wt% of monoclinic β - LiFeO2 and tetragonal 1.7 wt%. of γ - LiFeO2. The nanocrystalline nature of the prepared samples was confirmed by SEM analysis. The magnetic properties of LiFeO2 showed ferromagnetic property at room temperature.
