A Survey on Neuropsychological State, Oxidative Stress and Hematological Parameters in Coke Oven Workers

Coke oven factories are one of the main emitting sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s which have been identified as highly carcinogenic chemicals by IARC. Induction of oxidative stress and following disrupting pathways has been repeatedly reported in subjects exposed to PAHs. This study was performed to monitor the oxidative stress markers, hematological and biochemical parameters, and psychological states in coke oven workers. 100 male subjects were included in this comparative cross-sectional study. At first 50 male workers who were 22 - 63 and worked in the steel factory located in South-East of Iran were contained. Control subjects were chosen from Esfahan, in the factory’s neighborhood, consisting of 50 office workers without any background of occupational exposure to metals. The blood levels of hematological factors and oxidative stress were measured. In order to compare data, two-sample t test was applied. In order to measure the correlation between variables, Pearson correlation coefficient was applied. The mean level of total antioxidant capacity, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hematocrit were significantly lower in the workers in association with increased lipid per oxidation (LPO). A positive correlation existed between work history, hyper thyroids (r2 = 0.288, p = 0.01), and endocrine disorders (r2 = 0.309, p = 0.028). Occupational exposure of coke oven workers to PAHs can induce oxidative stress and consequent metabolic and neuropsychological disorders. When workers take daily shower and use protective tools, absorption of toxic elements would decrease so that reaching them to the body can be suitably limited.

AIM:To investigate the efficacy and adverse effects of antioxidant therapy in acute pancreatitis(AP),chronic pancreatitis(CP) and post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis(PEP).METHODS:Pub Med,Scopus,Google Scholar,Cochrane library database,and Evidence-based medicine/clinical trials published before August 2014 were searched. Clinical and laboratory outcomes of randomized trials of antioxidant therapy in patients with AP,CP and PEP were included. The methodological quality of the trials was assessed by the Jadad score based on the description of randomization,blinding,and dropouts(withdrawals). The results of the studies were pooled and meta-analyzed to provide estimates of the efficacy of antioxidant ***:Thirty four trials out of 1069 potentially relevant studies with data for 4898 patients wereeligible for inclusion. Antioxidant therapy significantly reduced the length of hospital stay in AP patients {mean difference-2.59 d(95%CI:-4.25-(-0.93)],P = 0.002}. Although,antioxidant therapy had no significant effect on serum C reactive protein(CRP) after 5-7 d in AP patients [mean difference-9.57(95%CI:-40.61-21.48,P = 0.55],it significantly reduced serum CRP after 10 d {mean difference-45.16 [95%CI:-89.99-(-0.33)],P = 0.048}. In addition,antioxidant therapy had no significant effect on CP-induced pain [mean difference-2.13(95%CI:-5.87-1.6),P = 0.26]. Antioxidant therapy had no significant effects on the incidence of all types of PEP [mean difference 1.05(95%CI:0.74-1.5),P = 0.78],severe PEP [mean difference 0.92(95%CI:0.43-1.97),P = 0.83],moderate PEP [mean difference 0.82(95%CI:0.54-1.23),P = 0.33],and mild PEP [mean difference 1.33(95%CI:0.99-1.78),P = 0.06]. This paper studies on clinopyroxene, plagioclase of andesitic to dacite rocks of Nochun area to understand the geotectonic and geothermobarometry conditions. Eocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks are exposed in Nochun that are near the Sarcheshmeh cooper mine. Volcanic rocks consist of andesitic to dacite rocks. Minerals in the volcanic rocks exhibit degrees of disequilibrium features. Plagioclase as dominant mineral in these rocks generally displays oscillatory zoning;sieves or dusty, cores are usually Ca-rich. Petrographic evidence and varying anorthite content (10% to 90%) of plagioclase and temperature estimates of clinopyroxene indicated fractional crystallization condition later than hydrothermal alteration and partial metasomatism occurred. The varying content indicates that the parent’s magma was generated from subalkaline composition and then hydrothermal alteration affected phenocryst minerals and matrix of andesitic to dacite rocks. The equilibration temperatures of clinopyroxene showed (800°C - 1200°C). Thus, in mafic minerals development of sieve textures in plagioclase, reaction rims, zoning and heterogeneity of plagioclase phenocrysts, the resorbed and embayed phenocrysts, unique composition of clinopyroxene phenocrysts;support fractional crystallization at deep reservoir and high pressure condition as an important process in the evolution of these rocks.

Objectives: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, immunologically mediated, mucocutaneous disorder. A wide range of topical and systemic therapies have been used in the treatment of OLP. The efficacy of IMOD (an Iranian new immunomodulator drug, con- taining selenium, carotene, and flavonoids) in the management of oral lichen planus was evaluated. Study design: In a before-after clinical trial study, thirty patients (21 women and 9 men;age range 35 - 66 years with 112 lesions) with lichen planus were enrolled. The study covered a three-month period of therapy by IMOD (400 mg/day) and a three-month follow-up period after drug cessation. Outcome mea- sures include soreness relief based on the “nu-meric scale”, and clinical improvement of lesion size and score. Saliva levels of TNF-α was analysed at the baseline and after treatment by ELISA. Statistical analysis of Wilcoxon and paired student’s t-test were used. Results: Approximately 85% of patients showed partial to complete improvement and re-mained sym- ptom free after drug cessation. There was no signifi-cant difference in mean saliva TNF-α level before and after the treatment. Conclusion: These results suggest that IMOD seems to be an effective alternative treat- ment for OLP and TNF-α may not be a good indica- tor for monitoring therapeutic response of OLP.

The Effect of Tea-Cinnamon and <i>Melissa officinalis</i>L. Aqueous Extraction, on Neuropsychology Distress, Biochemical and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Glass Production Workers

Medicinal plants are considered as natural sources of antioxidant compounds which may protect organisms against oxidative stresses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of Cinnamon and Melissa officinalis L. (Lemon balm) on the improvement of oxidative stress in glass production workers. This clinical study was conducted on 32 glass production workers. They were asked to use 0.5 g of tea-Cinnamon and 3 g of Lemon balm as infusion for 30 days in the morning and evening each day. At the beginning and the end of the study, blood samples were taken from individuals to determine the level of fasting blood suger (FBS), aspartate transaminase (AST), alanintransferase (ALT), triglyceride (TG), cholesterol (CL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein(HDL) levels, lipid peroxidation (LPO), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and sillies were measured in workers’ blood. At the end of experiment, data were subjected to the paired t-test analysis. Clinical examination was accomplished to record any abnormal signs or symptoms. After treatment, the high-density lipoprotein and TAC of serum significantly increased while the AST and LPO decreased. There were positive correlations between work history and initiative energy disorder of cognitive test. Probably tea-Cinnamon and Lemon balm possesses marked antioxidant activity and, therefore, it can be used to protect individuals from the oxidative stresses. Using supplementary antioxidants may be helpful in the treatment of workers.

This paper investigates the Effect of Metal Oxide Arrester (MOV) on the Chaotic Behaviour of power transformers considering nonlinear model for core loss of transformer. The paper contains two parts. In part (1): effect of nonlinear core on the onset of chaotic ferroresonance in a power transformer is evaluated. The core loss is modeled by a third order power series in voltage. in part (2): Effect of Metal Oxide Arrester(MOV) on results in part (1) will be studied. The results reveal that the presence of the arrester has a mitigating effect on ferroresonant chaotic overvoltages. resulted bifurcation diagrams and phase plane diagrams have also been delivered.

The Relationships between Cognitive Neuropsychological State, Oxidative Stress and Genotoxicity in Radiology Staff

Imbalance between the production and removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been used for characterizing Oxidative stress. Extra amount of ROS are hazardous and can lead damages to the cells resulting in harsh diseases. For cancer, diabetes, psychological disorders and age-related disorders, latent of ROS in induction of alteration and DNA harm is a critical factor. Regarding these finding, the current research was planned to test the relationship between cognitive neuropsychological state and oxidative markers and genotoxicity in radiology staff. Total Number of 47 radiology staff, working in the radiology center of a referral University Hospital in Shiraz, were invited in the study. The participants were occupationally exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation (x-ray) for more than 2 years. Psychological disorder was analyzed by SCL-90-R. In the plasma, lipid peroxidation, DNA harm, catalase, superoxide dismutase, myeloperoxidase, and glutathione peroxidase activity were calculated. Associations between parameters were measured by using Pearson correlation coefficient and multivariate linear regression analyses. As a result, there was a positive considerable connection between catalase and paranoid ideation, Obsessive-Compulsive, Anxiety and total. Furthermore, the correlation between psychoticism, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Paranoid Ideation and DNA damage was positive. There were positive relationships between superoxide dismutase and psychomotor speed, initiative/energy, selective attention and verbal memory. So, there were significant relationships among interpersonal sensitivity, somatization, depression and gender. But, there were no major relationships among psychological distress, history workers and oxidative stress. In so many words, Oxidative stress and genotoxicity result in psychological disorders in radiology staff. So, radiology staff should have more attention, as they suffered from some psychological disorders.

目的:探讨糖尿病患者发生微循环障碍时,外周神经病变(DPN)与视网膜病变之间是否有相关性,及二者在2型糖尿病中的危险指数。方法:本研究包括100例(男性51例,女性49例)门诊的糖尿病患者,均为非胰岛素依赖的糖尿病患者(NIDDM),观察患者的外周神经病变及视网膜病变进展情况,随访时间18mo。结果:视网膜病变的患者78.1%同时有外周神经病变,患有外周神经病变的患者79.1%同时有视网膜病变,统计学分析表明外周神经病变与视网膜病变之间并没有明显的相关性。但是,90.9%患有增殖性糖尿病视网膜病变的患者同时有外周神经病变,而27.8%患有视网膜病变的患者同时有外周神经病变,单因素及多因素logistic回归分析均表明它们之间有明显的相关性(r=0.42,P=0.02)。结论:严重的糖尿病视网膜病变与糖尿病性神经病变有相关性。本研究表明糖尿病神经病变可作为糖尿病视网膜病变进程的预警信号,出现神经病变的患者需要更细致广泛的眼科检查,特别是对于病程较长的糖尿病患者。
