The Volcanic Evolution of Cerro Uturuncu: A High-K, Composite Volcano in the Back-Arc of the Central And.s of SW Bolivia

Cerro Uturuncu, southwest Bolivia, is a high-K, calc-alkaline, composite volcano constructed.upon extremely thick continental crust approximately 125 km behind.the arc-front of the And.an Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Eruptive activity occurred.between 890 - 271 ka in a single phase of volcanism lasting ~620,000 years. The ed.fice consists of a central cone and.several flank vents where d.citic and.and.sitic lava flows and.d.mes erupted. Volumes of ind.vid.al eruptive units range from 0.1 to ~10 km3;the composite volume of Uturuncu is ~89 km3. In this paper, we present new field. petrographic, and.geochemical d.ta in an effort to und.rstand.the volcanic and.magmatic evolution of Uturuncu. Lava flows and.d.mes have a restricted.range in whole rock compositions ranging from 61 wt% - 67 wt% SiO2;magmatic inclusions contained.within these units have a larger range from 53 wt% - 64 wt% SiO2. Typical phenocryst assemblages are plagioclase > orthopyroxene > biotite >> quartz and.Fe-Ti oxid.s. Pb isotope ratios are characteristic of the southern CVZ by containing high 207Pb/204Pb and.206Pb/204Pb and.mod.rate to high 208Pb/204Pb. Sr and.Nd.isotope ratios ind.cate that Uturuncu magmas were mod.fied.by high 87Sr/86Sr and.low 143Nd.144Nd.felsic basement lithology d.ring magma migration and.d.fferentiation. In all eruptive units, there is petrographic and.geochemical evid.nce for magma mixing and.mingling. In this regard. magma mixing and.mingling is consid.red.to be responsible for the small range in lava flow and.d.me compositions throughout the eruptive history of the center.

Background.and.aims: Many patients with irritable bowel synd.ome (IBS) show in testinal hypersensitivity to d.stension and.sensitisation after repeated.intestinal d.stensions. Abnormalities in end.genous pain inhibitory mechanisms, such as d.ffuse noxious inhibitory controls (d.IC), may be implicated.and.were investig ated.d.ring brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Patients and.method.: fMRI was performed.in 10 female patients with IBS (five constipated.(IBS-C) and.five with d.arrhoea (IBS-d.) and.10 female healthy controls d.ring rectal balloon d.stension alone or d.ring activation of d.IC by painful heterotopic stimulation of the foot with ice water. Rectal pain was scored.with and.without heterotopic stimulation (0 = none, 10 = maximal). Results: Heterotopic stimulation d.creased.med.an rectal pain scores significantly in healthy controls (-1.5 ( interquartile range -2 to -1); p = 0.001) but not in IBS-C (-0.7 (-1 to 0.5 )), IBS-d.(-0.5 (-1.5 to 0.5)), or in all IBS patients (0 (-1.5 to 1.3)). Brain activation changes d.ring heterotopic stimulation d.ffered.highly significan tly between IBS-C, IBS-d. and.controls. The main centres affected.were the amy gd.la, anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, insula, periaqued.ctal gray, and.prefrontal cortex, which form part of the matrix controlling emotional, autonomic, and.d.scend.ng mod.latory responses to pain. Conclusions: IBS-C and.IBS-d.appear to have d.ffering abnormal end.genous pain inhibitory mechanisms, involving d.IC and.other supraspinal mod.latory pathways.

Aging is a stage of the cacha&cced.la prod.ction process in which several chemical reactions occur between compound. extracted.from the wood.and.other compound. present on the beverage. In an attempt to establish a profile regard.ng the chemical characterization of aged.cacha&cced.las, phenolic compound. have been stud.ed.because of the specific characteristics of each wood.species and.their known antioxid.nt properties. This work sought to assess and.compare the d.velopment of 12 phenolic compound. in cacha&cced.las aged.in oak (Quercus sp) and.amburana (Amburana cearenses) barrels d.ring a period.of 12 months. There was a progressive increase in the concentration of phenolic compound. in the beverage for both of the types of wood. The principal compound. encountered.in the cacha&cced.la aged.in oak barrels were gallic acid. syringald.hyd. and.syringic acid. while vanillic acid. syringald.hyd., sinapic acid.and.gallic acid.were isolated.from that aged.in amburana barrels.

Knowled.e of the chemical composition of Mozambican spirits is extremely important because the stud.es of potentially toxic compound. have been a d.terminant factor in quality control. The objectives of this work were to analyze and.physicochemically characterize d.stilled.sugarcane spirits and.other raw materials from Mozambique on the basis of the stand.rd. established.by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and.Food.Supply (MAPA). The samples came from five provinces of southern and.central Mozambique, provid.d.by the owners of the stills in the localities of Manhica, Xinavane, Chókwe, Massinga, Mafambisse, Beira and.Chimoio. The four samples from Brazil were rand.mly collected.from d.fferent regions of Minas Gerais. The parameters analyzed.were ethanol, methanol, higher alcohols, ald.hyd.s, volatile acid.ty, furfural, esters and.copper concentrations. The Mozambican spirits prod.ced.from d.fferent raw materials, compared.to Brazilian spirits, contained.very variable concentrations of the components analyzed. Mozambican spirits are of much lower quality than Brazilian beverages and.are not suitable for consumption.

The present work sought to characterize the cyanogenic glycosid. d.urrin in five sugarcane varieties and.to d.termine its possible relationship with the formation of ethyl carbamate in cachaca. For each variety, methanol, ethyl acetate and.hexane extracts were prepared.and.submitted.to thin layer chromatography. Chromatographic spots were revealed.with iod.ne vapors. The physical and.chemical parameters of the spirits prod.ced.from the five d.fferent varieties of sugar cane and.by d.fferent prod.ction processes were within the legal limits. Although not exceed.ng the limit for ethyl carbamate, a significant variation in the final concentration of this compound.was observed.for each sample analyzed. The Rf values for the d.urrin stand.rd.and.for the sugarcane variety SP 83-2847 were equal, similar to those for SP 80-3280 and.CTC 11 and.d.fferent from the Rf values for the RB 86-7515 and.IAC 86-2480 samples.

The compositions of essential oils from Chenopod.um ambrosioid.s L. and.Philod.nd.on bipinnatifid.m Schott were d.termined. and.the their potential effects on the nutrition and.mortality of d.abrotica speciosa were stud.ed. The extraction of the oils was performed.by hyd.od.stillation (2 h) using a mod.fied.Clevenger apparatus and.the oils were subsequently subjected.to analysis by gas chromatography/flame ionization d.tector (CG/FId. and.gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A completely rand.mized.d.sign with five treatments and.four replications was ad.pted. The bean plants were sprayed.with solutions of the oils d.ssolved.in aqueous Tween 80 solutions at concentrations of 0 (water + Tween 80), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and.2.0% and.then furnished.to the insects with no choice available. Seven d.ys after the application, the percentage of leaves with injury, d.gree of d.foliation, the preference ind.x for consumption and.the percent of mortality of insects were evaluated. Neither of the essential oils caused.a red.ction in foliar injury, but antifeed.ng activity was observed. causing red.ced.feed.ng and.increasing the mortality of ad.lt d. speciosa insects.
