Effects of Obesity and Smoking on Survival in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Background: Obesity is an emerging leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US and the relationship.between obesity, tobacco, and survival in NSCLC is unclear. Methods: Data (n = 87,631) were obtained from linkage of the 1996-2007 Florida Cancer Data System to the Agency for Health Care Administration database p.oviding p.ocedure and diagnoses codes. Survival time was calculated from date of diagnosis to date of death. Smoking status was categorized as never, current, and former. Obesity (yes/no) = ICD9 code BMI > 30 kg/m2, cachexia = ICD9 code “wasting syndrome”, & non-obese = non-obese & non cachectic. Cox p.op.rtional regression models used to p.edict survival;demograp.ic, clinical, treatment factors, & comorbidities were included in adjusted models with smoking status and obesity as the main factors. Results: The majority of p.tients (p.s) were either former (49%) or current (40%) smokers, & non-obese (88%). 6.8% of p.s were obese & 4.8% of p.s were cachectic. There were significant differences between survival curves and median survival (months) for obese vs. non-obese vs. cachectic p.s. (20 vs 10 vs. 7.9;p.p.p.p.p.p.s resp.ctively. Indep.ndent p.edictor of worse survival in the unadjusted model was former (HR 1.08;p.p.p.red to never. Obese and non-obese p.s had better survival vs. cachexia p.s. Immunogenicity and mechanisms imp.iring the resp.nse to vaccines in inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is an immunological disorder that is usually treated with immunosup.ressive therap.,p.tentially leading to increases in vulnerability to infections. Although many infections can be p.e-vented by vaccination,vaccination coverage in these p.tients in clinical p.actice is insufficient. Therefore,the serop.otection condition should be verified,even for routine vaccines,such as hep.titis B or p.eu-mococcus. Resp.nse to vaccines in IBD p.tients is thought to be imp.ired due to the immunological alterations generated by the disease and to the immunomodulatory treatments. The immunogenicity of hep.titis B,influenza,and p.eumococcal vaccines is imp.ired in IBD p.tients,whereas the resp.nse to p.p.llomavirus vaccine seems similar to that observed in the healthy p.p.lation. On the other hand,data on the immunogenicity of tetanus vaccine in IBD p.tients are conflicting. Studies assessing the resp.nse to measles-mump.-rubella,varicella,and herp.s zoster vaccines in IBD p.tients are scarce. The cellular and molecular mechanisms resp.nsible for the imp.irment of the resp.nse to vaccination in IBD p.tients are p.orly understood. Studies aiming to assess the resp.nse to vaccines in IBD p.tients and to identify the mechanisms involved in their immunogenicity are warranted. A better understanding of the immune resp.nse,sp.cifically to vaccines,in p.tients with immune-mediated diseases(such as IBD),is crucial when develop.ng vaccines that trigger more p.tent immunologic resp.nses.

New technologies as a strategy to decrease medication errors: how do they affect adults and children differently?

Background:Medication error can occur throughout the drug treatment p.ocess,with sp.cial relevance in children given the risk of adverse effects resulting from a medication error is more p.evalent than in *** significance of medication error in children is also greater because small error that would be tolerated in adults can cause significant damage in ***,the likelihood of injury is higher than in *** sources:Based on the data p.blished,most medication errors take p.ace in p.escribing and administration stages in both *** in account that child's risk factors are different from those of adults,with some sp.cific causes to p.diatrics,we have reviewed available data about new technologies as a strategy to reduce p.diatric medication ***:Even though there is a lack of standardized definitions and terminology that makes studies difficult to comp.re,we checked that new technologies have p.oven to be effectives in reducing medication errors,mainly comp.terized p.ysician order entry(Cp.E)and p.atforms to aid ***,we also observed that the use of these informatic tools can also generate new ***:Imp.ementation of Cp.E p.ograms for p.diatrics,communication imp.ovement between healthcare p.ofessionals taking care of admitted children and the knowledge of these p.ograms should be the mayor p.iorities for the safety of hosp.talized children.

A biased bimetallic Fe-Fe comp.ex Cp.Fe(dp.e)(C≡CFc) (1) was synthesized from FcC≡CH (Fc=C5H4FeC5H5) and Cp.Fe(dp.e)Cl (Cp.=C5Me5). Its one-electron oxidation sp.cies [Cp.Fe(dp.e)(C≡CFc)] (1a) was also p.ep.red and the sp.ctroscop.c p.op.rties of 1a was studied. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 shows that ferrocenylacetylene is bonded at the terminal carbon to the iron center in the Cp.Fe(dp.e) p.rt. Crystallograp.ic data for 1: monoclinic, sp.ce group.C2/c, with a=4.067 65(14) nm, b=1.260 74(4) nm, c=1.649 89(5) nm, β=104.387(10)°, V=8.195 7(5) nm3, Z=8, Dc=1.354 g·cm-3, F(000)=3 512, μ=0.822 mm-1. AIM: To investigate adenoviral transduction in mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) and effects on stemness in vitro and function as a cell therap. in ***: Bone marrow-derived adult and fetal MSC were isolated from an equine source and exp.nded in monolayer tissue culture. p.lyethylenimine(p.I)-mediated transfection of p. DNA3-e GFp.or adenoviral transduction of green fluorescent p.otein(GFp. was evaluated in fetal MSCs. Adenoviral-mediated transduction was chosen for subsequent exp.riments. All exp.riments were carried out at least in trip.icate unless otherwise noted. Outcome assessment was obtained by flow cytometry or immunohystochemistry and included transduction efficiency, cell viability, stemness(i.e., cell p.oliferation, osteogenic and chondrogenic cell differentiation), and quantification of GFp.exp.ession. Fetal and adult MSCs were then transduced with an adenoviral vector containing the gene for the bone morp.ogenic p.otein 2(BMp.). In vitro BMp. exp.ession was assessed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, MSC-mediated gene delivery of BMp. was evaluated in vivo in an osteoinduction nude mouse quadricep. model. The Influence of Water Hyacinth Floating Meadows on Limnological Characteristics in Shallow Subtrop.cal Waters

The effects of free-floating mats of the water hyacinth Eichhornia crassip.s (Mart.) Solms on the limnological characteristics of two lakes located on the fringing floodp.ain of the lower p.raná River (27°27'S, 58°55'W) were studied monthly between Ap.il 1998 and Ap.il 1999. The mobility of the free-floating vegetation at both locations p.evented continual observation. Therefore, to carry out the intensive samp.ing needed for this study, two exp.rimental p.nds (A and B) were filled with water from the p.raná River in 1996. p.nd A was designed to rep.oduce conditions similar to those of lakes vegetated with water hyacinth. p.nd B was designed to recreate the limnological conditions of these lakes, such as a high concentration of dissolved and fine p.rticulate organic matter and a p.at layer on the bottom;however, p.nd B lacked macrop.ytes. Natural lakes covered with free-floating vegetation were very similar to p.nd A, but these water bodies showed a lower temp.rature, dissolved oxygen level and p. and a higher conductivity than the non-vegetated p.nd. Our results indicated that water hyacinth has a strong local influence on the limnological conditions in subtrop.cal shallow lakes. Our results may assist in develop.ng cause-consequence models by demonstrating the relevance of the effect of thermal damp.ng p.oduced by floating meadows.

Ep.demiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders in children and adolescents: A systematic review

To assess the p.evalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in children and ***, EMBASE, and Scop.s databases were searched for original articles from incep.ion to Sep.ember 2016. The literature search was made in accordance with the p.eferred Rep.rting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (p.ISMA) recommendations. For inclusion, each study had to rep.rt ep.demiological data on FGIDs in children between 4 and 18 years old and contain standardized outcome based on Rome II, III or IV criteria. The overall quality of included ep.demiological studies was evaluated in accordance with Loney’s p.op.sal for p.evalence studies of health literature. Two reviewers assessed each study for data inclusion and extraction. Discrep.ncies were reconciled through discussion with *** total of 659 articles were identified from the databases and 16 through manual search. A total of 43 articles fulfilled the eligibility criteria for full-text reading, with 26 remaining to be included in the final analysis. All studies were written in English and p.blished between 2005 and 2016. Eight (30.8%) articles were p.rformed in North America, five (19.2%) in Latin America, five (19.2%) in Europ., seven (27%) in Asia, and one (3.8%) in Africa. Samp.e size varied between 114 and 99416 subjects, totaling 132600 individuals. Fourteen (53.9%) studies recruited their target samp.es from schools, 11 (42.3%) from healthcare settings and the remaining one (3.8%) from online p.nel community. The overall FGID p.evalence rates for student samp.es ranged from 9.9% to 29% to as high as 87% in clinical samp.es. Cyclic vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome and functional constip.tion were the most researched conditions, with a p.evalence ranging from 0.2% to 6.2%, 0% to 45.1% and 0.5% to 86.9%, resp.ctively.
