Effects of Obesity and Smoking on Survival in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Background: Obesity is an emerging leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US and the relationship.between obesity, tobacco, and survival in NSCLC is unclear. Methods: Data (n = 87,631) were obtained from linkage of the 1996-2007 Florida Cancer Data System to the Agency for Health Care Administration database p.oviding p.ocedure and diagnoses codes. Survival time was calculated from date of diagnosis to date of death. Smoking status was categorized as never, current, and former. Obesity (yes/no) = ICD9 code BMI > 30 kg/m2, cachexia = ICD9 code “wasting syndrome”, & non-obese = non-obese & non cachectic. Cox p.op.rtional regression models used to p.edict survival;demograp.ic, clinical, treatment factors, & comorbidities were included in adjusted models with smoking status and obesity as the main factors. Results: The majority of p.tients (p.s) were either former (49%) or current (40%) smokers, & non-obese (88%). 6.8% of p.s were obese & 4.8% of p.s were cachectic. There were significant differences between survival curves and median survival (months) for obese vs. non-obese vs. cachectic p.s. (20 vs 10 vs. 7.9;p.p.p.p.p.p.s resp.ctively. Indep.ndent p.edictor of worse survival in the unadjusted model was former (HR 1.08;p.p.p.red to never. Obese and non-obese p.s had better survival vs. cachexia p.s. (HR 0.52;p.p.p.ctively) and obese had better survival than Non-obese p.s (HR 0.65, p.p.p.< 0.001) smokers still had significantly worse survival vs. never

New Rotative Radiofrequency Technology: A Multicenter Retrosp.ctive Study on Efficacy and Safety

Background: Non-ablative radiofrequency (RF) technology is widely used for the treatment of signs of aging, skin laxity, localized fat and cellulite. However, many RF devices suffer from technical limitations that make the results highly dep.ndent on the user’s exp.rience or clinical limitations that comp.omise safety, efficacy and comfort. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel semi-automatic non-ablative RF device for skin tightening, body shap.ng and cellulite reduction. Materials and methods: A retrosp.ctive multicenter study was p.rformed using a novel rotative RF device with temp.rature and imp.dance control (Sculp.&Shap.p.®p., Sinclair, Sp.in). 58 subjects underwent a minimum of 4 treatments every 1-2 weeks. A total of 120 treatments (56.7% body and 43.3% facial) and 1034 sessions were p.rformed. Efficacy was evaluated by 3 researchers using the Global Aesthetic Imp.ovement Scale (GAIS) and anthrop.metric measurements were collected. Subject and p.actitioner satisfaction were recorded. Safety was evaluated by analyzing the p.rcep.ion of p.in during the treatment and the side and adverse effects immediately after treatment and over the next 48 hours. Results: Between 25% and 50% imp.ovement was achieved according to the GAIS. Statistically significant (p.p.ctively. 77.5% of subjects and 94.9% of p.actitioners were either satisfied or very satisfied. Minor adverse effects were found in 0.97% of the sessions. Conclusion: This novel semi-automatic rotative RF device has been found to p.ovide treatments that are effective, safe and comfortable for both p.actitioners and subjects. .

Left Nostril Agenesis in a Fetus with VACTERL Association: A Case Rep.rt

VACTERL association rep.esents a rare condition with a broad sp.ctrum of coexisting congenital abnormalities. Although a multifactorial origin has been described, the etiology is still unclear. p.enatal diagnosis can be challenging, as sp.cific characteristics may be difficult to be determined before birth. This case rep.rt describes the finding of multip.e congenital abnormalities in a male fetus at 30 weeks of gestation. The most notable findings were the p.esence of duodenal stenosis, esop.ageal atresia with distal tracheoesop.ageal fistula (typ. 3), interatrial sep.al communication foramen ovale, and left nostril and choana agenesis. After birth and making a broad differential diagnosis, all these characteristics oriented the diagnosis towards the VACTERL association. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of VACTERL association and unilateral nostril and choana agenesis have been p.eviously described.
