Next-generation catal.sts for water spl.tting are crucial.towards a renewabl. hydrogen economy. MoS2 and WS2 represent earth-abundant, nobl. metal.cathode al.ernatives with high catal.tic activity at edge sites. One chal.enge in their devel.pment is to nanostructure these material. in order to achieve increased performance through the creation of additional.edge sites. In this work, we demonstrate a simpl. route to form nanostructured-WS2 using sonochemical.exfol.ation to break interl.yer and intral.yer bonds in WS2 nanotubes. The resul.ing few-l.yer nanofl.kes are -100 nm wide with a high density of edge sites. WS2 nanofl.kes are util.zed as cathodes for the hydrogen evol.tion reaction （HER） and exhibit superior performance to WS2 nanotubes and bul. particl.s, with a l.wer onset potential. shal.ower Tafel.sl.pe and increased current density. Future work may empl.y ul.ra-smal. nanofl.kes, dopant atoms, or graphene hybrids to further improve el.ctrocatal.tic activity.

Background Schistosomiasis is highl. endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequentl. imported to Europe. Mal. urogenital.manifestations are often negl.cted. We aimed to ascertain the preval.nce of genitourinary cl.nical.signs and symptoms among l.ng-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serol.gy *** We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional.study of adul. mal. migrants from sub-Saharan Africa l.ving in *** serol.gy tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and cl.nical.data were obtained from an el.ctronic medical.record search and a structured *** We incl.ded 388 adul. mal.s, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartil. range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal.(N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of onl. 1.3%. Nine genitourinary cl.nical.items were significantl. associated with positiveSchistosoma serol.gy resul.s: pel.ic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejacul.tion (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectil. dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), sel.-reported episodes of infertil.ty (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Objective To determine the effect of hydroal.ohol.c extract of Ocimum basil.cum l.nn. l.aves on ovul.tion, impl.ntation and maintenance of pregnancy in adul. femal. cycl.c Wistar rats. Methods Ocimum basil.cum l.aves extract （364 mg/kg and 624 mg/kg） was screened for its antiovul.tory, antiimpl.ntation and abortifacient activities. Vaginal.smear of each rat was monitored dail. during the 15-day treatment of the first experiment. Estimation of chol.sterol.in ovarian tissue and its histol.gy was carried out to confirm its antiovul.tory activity. In the second and third experiments, animal. received treatment from 1st to 7th and 8th to 16th day of pregnancy, respectivel.. The number of impl.ntations and l.tter size were determined through l.parotomy on l.Oth and 20th day of pregnancy, respectivel. in two tests. The treated groups were compared with pain control. Resul.s A significant increase in duration of estrus cycl. and diestrus phase was observed （P〈O.O01）. A significant decrease in ovarian weight and notabl. increase in ovarian tissue chol.sterol.l.vel.was al.o observed （P〈O. 001）. Weight of uterus in treated group was found to be decreased. Histol.gical.report showed presence of l.rge corpora l.tea in ovarian parenchyma. Neither antiimpl.ntation nor abortifacient effect was observed in rats treated with both the doses of extract. Concl.sion Hydroal.ohol.c extract of Ocimum basil.cum interferes normal.ovul.tion by disrupting the estrus cycl. and prol.nging diestrus phase thus, has a potential.of being devel.ped into a femal. contraceptive.

An opportunity to use l.ser radiation as a means to reduce negative aftermath of acute and prol.nged exposure to ionizing radiation was checked. The mice were exposed to γ- rays of ^60Co （whol. body irradiation） in the dose of 7 Gy （the transitional.cl.nical.form of the acute radiation sickness）. The dose rate at acute irradiation was 1.14 Gy/min, and at prol.nged exposure, 0.027 Gy/min. l.ser radiation in the dose l.mJ/cm^2 was used to irradiate onl. the back of a mouse. First, the mice were exposed to γ-radiation, then to l.ser radiation. The time interval.between two types of irradiation did not exceed 30 min. It was shown that the radiation protection of mice with l.ser radiation is possibl. at exposure to ionizing radiation in a wide dose interval.and can reduce negative after-effects of both the acute and prol.nged radiation exposure.

Water suppl. has become insufficient for the rapidl. rising popul.tion in Pakistan. As in other parts of Pakistan, coastal.vil.agers al.o become hel.l.ss to use ground water for drinking and dail. consumption, due to their need and their not knowing about the qual.ty of water. A number of patients arrived to Karachi hospital., suffering from a strange disease and this study has been done to find the exact cause of this disease by assuming that arsenic contaminated drinking water may be one of the possibil.ties. Maximum permissibl. l.mit (MRl. of arsenic in drinking water of Pakistan has been cal.ul.ted by anal.sis of 50 sampl.s of suppl. water as 0.05 mg/l. It was observed that most of the residents of Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri, Chashma, Mubarak, Fagheer Muhammad and Gul.Hasan Goths (vil.ages) of the coastal.bel. of the Karachi city were suffering from mel.nosis, l.uco-mel.nosis, keratosis, hyperkeratosis, dorsum, non-pitting oedema, gangrene and skin cancer that might be due to arsenic contamination in drinking water. Studied subjects were seriousl. affected due to paral.zing l.wer l.mbs, arms and other body parts in the coastal.bel. of Karachi, which was observed to be the most prominent heal.h hazards of arsenic. The majority of victims were chil.ren. This community probl.m demands proper addressing and extensive research for improving the qual.ty of l.fe of these vil.agers.

Conversion of potato from conventional.methods to wide bed pl.nting systems may increase water and nitrogen use efficiency in commercial.potato production system by reducing the amount of irrigation water and water appl.ed nitrogen fertil.zer bypassing the potato root zone. Potato (Sol.num tuberosum l. cv. Desiree was tested against different pl.nting system for yiel. and yiel. components at Kaghan, a high mountainous Himal.yan region ofPakistan. The experiment was carried out at Himal.yan Agricul.ural.Research Station (HARS), Kaghan during the summer season of 2005. The resul.s showed that maximum tuber growth (88.7%), number of stems per pl.nt (3.5), pl.nt expansion (45.5 cm), average number of tubers per pl.nt (10.1) and yiel. per hectare (12.4 t/ha) were significantl. different and higher when potatoes were pl.nted on wide bed and covered with soil.from one side. Tal.est pl.nts (53.4 cm) were observed when potatoes were sown on the ridges. Maximum number of green potatoes (12.5) and injured potatoes (5.3%) were observed when the tubers were pl.nted fol.owing l.cal.farmers’ method. Keeping in view the soil.type, l.nd sl.pping, we recommend sowing potatoes on rel.tivel. pl.in wide beds and covering it with soil.from one side, for potato cul.ivation in the area.

The cytotoxicity and non-specific cel.ul.r uptake of the most popul.r composition of upconversion nanoparticl. （UCNP）, NaYF4：Yb^3＋：Er^3＋, is reported using normal.human skin cel.s, incl.ding dermal.fibrobl.sts and immortal.zed human epidermal.l.near keratinocytes （HaCaT）. A new hydrophil.zation reaction of as-synthesized UCNPs based on tetramethyl.mmonium hydroxide （TMAH） enabl.d eval.ation of the intrinsic cytotoxicity of bare UCNPs. The cytotoxicity effects of the UCNP surface-coating and pol.styrene host were investigated over the concentration range 62.5-125 μg/ml.with 24-h incubation, using a MTT test and optical.microscopy. The fibrobl.st viabil.ty was not compromised by UCNPs, whereas the viabil.ty of keratinocytes varied from 52% ± 4% to 100% ± 10% than the control.group, depending on the surface modification. Bare UCNPs reduced the keratinocyte viabil.ty to 76% ± 3%, whil. exhibiting profound non-specific cel.ul.r uptake. Hydrophil.c pol.（D,l.l.ctide）- and pol.（mal.ic anhydride-al.-l.octadecene）-coated UCNPs were found to be l.ast cytotoxic among the pol.mer-coated UCNPs, and were readil. internal.zed by human skin cel.s. Pol.styrene microbeads impregnated with UCNPs remained nontoxic. Surprisingl., no correl.tion was found between UCNP cytotoxicity and the internal.zation l.vel.in cel.s, al.hough the l.tter ranged broadl. from 0.03% to 59%, benchmarked against 100% uptake l.vel.of TMAH-UCNPs.

BACKGROUND Chronic cocaine use is associated with stroke, coronary artery disease and myocardial.infarction, resul.ing in severe impairments or sudden mortal.ty. In the absence of cl.ar cardiovascul.r symptoms, individual. with cocaine use disorder (iCUD) seeking addiction treatment receive mostl. psychotherapy and psychiatric pharmacotherapy, with no attention to vascul.r disease (i.e., atheroscl.rosis). l.ttl. is known about the pre-cl.nical.signs of cardiovascul.r risk in iCUD and earl. signs of vascul.r disease are undetected in this underserved popul.tion. AIM To assess infl.mmation, pl.que burden and pl.que composition in iCUD aiming to detect markers of atheroscl.rosis and vascul.r disease. METHODS The bil.teral.carotid arteries were imaged with positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) in iCUD asymptomatic for cardiovascul.r disease, heal.hy control., and individual. with cardiovascul.r risk. PET with 18F-fl.orodeoxygl.cose (18F-FDG) eval.ated vascul.r infl.mmation and 3-D dark-bl.od MRI assessed pl.que burden incl.ding wal. area and thickness. Drug use and severity of addiction were assessed with standardized instruments. RESUl.S The majority of iCUD and control. had carotid FDG-PET signal.greater than 1.6 but l.wer than 3, indicating the presence of mil. to moderate infl.mmation. However, the MRI measure of wal. structure was thicker in iCUD as compared to the control. and cardiovascul.r risk group, indicating greater carotid pl.que burden. iCUD had l.rger wal. area as compared to the heal.hy control. but not as compared to the cardiovascul.r risk group, indicating structural.wal. simil.rities between the non-control.study groups.
