Risk factors of regression and undercorrection in photorefractive keratectomy: a case-control study

AIM: To determine risk factors of regression and undercorrection following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in myopia or myopic astigmatism. METHODS: A case -control study was designed in which eyes with an indication for re-treatment (AT) were defined as cases; primary criteria for RT indication, as assessed at least 9mo postoperatively, included an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/30 or worse and a stable refraction for more than 3mo. Additional considerations included optical quality symptoms and significant higher order aberrations (HOAs). Controls were chosen from the same cohort of operated eyes which had complete post-operative follow up data beyond 9mo and did not need RT. The cohort included patients who had undergone PRK by the Tissue-Saving (TS) ablation profile of Technolas 217z100 excimer laser (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA). Mitomycin C had been used in all of the primary procedures. RESULTS: We had 70 case eyes and 158 control eyes, and they were comparable in terms of age, sex and follow -up time (P values: 0.58, 1.00 and 0.89, respectively). Pre-operative spherical equivalent of more than -5.00 diopter (D), intended optical zone (OZ) diameter of less than 6.00 mm and ocular fixation instability during laser ablation were associated with AT indications (all P values -5.00 D), smaller OZ (<6.00 mm) and unstable fixation during laser ablation of PRK for myopia and myopic astigmatism were found to be strong predictors of undercorrection and regression.

A TEM study on the microstructure of spark plasma sintered ZrB2-based composite with nano-sized SiC dopant

Sintering behavior of ZrB2ceramic with nano-sized SiC dopant was studied. ZrB2-25 vol% nano-sized SiC was selected as the starting mixture to fabricate the composite. The manufacturing process was accomplished at 1800℃ for 5 min under 25 MPa via spark plasma sintering(SPS). The as-sintered sample reached a relative density of 99%. Besides the initial phases, namely ZrB2and SiC, the high-resolution X-ray diffraction(HRXRD) was used to study the formation of an in-situ ZrC phase. The possible chemical interactions during the ZrC phase formation were scrutinized. The microstructure of the composite was studied by the field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Elemental analysis through FESEM evaluations revealed the formation of amorphous phases, rich in Zr, C, Si, B, and O elements, which was in harmony with the thermodynamical assessments. TEM studies endorsed the formation of such phases, containing a glassy bed of Si–B–O with ZrC and C islands dispersed therein.

Functionalized Graphene Oxide with Bismuth and Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles for Efficiently Removing Formaldehyde from the Air by Photocatalytic Degradation-Adsorption Process

Formaldehyde(HCHO)is formed through the oxidation of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)and can cause human *** oxide and titanium oxide nanoparticles-functionalized nanographene oxide(Bi_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2)@NGO)were used to rapidly remove the HCHO from the air by a photocatalytic degradation-adsorption process(PC-DAP).The formaldehyde vapor in pure air was generated in a dynamic system within a chamber,and flowed over Bi_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2)@NGO adsorbent inside a fixed-bed quartz reactor(FBQR)under UV irradiation at optimized conditions(250C).At atmospheric pressure,the flow rate and gas hourly space velocity(GHSV)were adjusted to 300 mL/min and 100-450 L/h,*** radicals of HCHO and nanographene oxide(NGO)were generated through the UV-photochemical process,enhancing the chemical adsorption through the radicals’*** the other hand,the semi-degradation process by catalytic oxidation process converted some HCHO into raw materials of CO_(2)and H_(2)O,while the unconverted HCHO was physically absorbed by ***,the HCHO concentration in the outlet system was measured by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector(GC-FID)after derivatizing formaldehyde with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine(DNPH)and ***,efficient removal of HCHO from the air,the removal efficiency of more than 95%,was achieved through physical/chemical adsorption and the *** mean removal efficiencies for HCHO with Bi_(2)O_(3)-TiO_(2)@NGO,TiO_(2)@NGO,Bi_(2)O_(3)@NGO,and NGO were 98.7%,73.6%,61.8%,and 11.4%,respectively(n=10,RSDalidated by spiking different concentrations of standard HCHO into pure air.

Susceptibility of Anopheles maculipennis to different classes of insecticides in West Azarbaijan Province, Northwestern Iran

Objective: To determine the susceptibility status of Anopheles maculipennis(An. maculipennis) against the major insecticides used in the health sectors in West Azarbaijan Province, Northwestern ***: Unfed 3-5 days old adult females of An. maculipennis were collected across the West Azarbaijan Province and were subjected to evaluation of their susceptibility following World Health Organization recommended protocol against six insecticides(permethrin, deltamethrin, propoxur, bendiocarb, malathion and dieldrin) belonging to four different classes. Results: In this study, 916 specimens of An. maculipennis were examined against the insecticides which indicated that An. maculipennis was tolerant to permethrin, deltamethrin and dielderin, but displayed resistance against propoxur, bendiocarb and malathion. Conclusions: The pattern of resistance in An. maculipennis could be attributed to the agricultural landscapes, agricultural pesticides used and the exposure of the mosquitoes to insecticides. Logical cooperation is needed between the agriculture and health sectors to ensure the judicious use of pesticides in each sector and the management of probable resistance.

Zr-Co(Cu)-Al bulk metallic glasses with optimal glass-forming ability and their compressive properties

The formation of bulk metallic glasses（BMGs） in the ternary Zr（56） Co（28-x）Al（16） and quaternary Zr（56） Co（28-x）CuxAl16（x=2, 4, 5, 6, 7, mole fraction, %） glassy alloys was investigated via the copper mold suction casting method. The main purpose of this work was to locate the optimal BMG-forming composition for the quaternary Zr Co（Cu）Al alloys and to improve the plasticity of the parent alloy. The X-ray diffractometry（XRD）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM） and differential scanning calorimetry（DSC） were used to investigate the glassy alloys structure and their glass forming ability（GFA）. In addition, the compression test, microhardness, nano-indentation and scanning electron microscopy（SEM） were utilized to discuss the possible mechanisms involved in the enhanced plasticity achievement. The highest GFA among Cu-containing alloys was found for the Zr（56） Co（22） Cu6 Al（16） alloy, which was similar to that of the base alloy. Furthermore, the plasticity of the base alloy increased significantly from 3.3% to 6% for the Zr（56） Co（22） Cu）6 Al（16） BMG. The variations in the plasticity and GFA of the alloys were discussed by considering the positive heat of mixing within Cu and Co elements.

Brucellosis: Pathophysiology and new promising treatments with medicinal plants and natural antioxidants

Brucellosis is an old, infectious and common zoonosis whose causative agents are Gramnegative bacteria from the Brucella genus. Brucellosis is transmitted through direct contactwith infected animals or using unpasteurized dairy products of goats, pigs, camels, sheep,buffalo and cows. Brucellosis is still the most common zoonosis in the world, with mostof cases occurring in developing countries. Today, an approach to traditional medicine andmedicinal plants, especially with regards to the repeated recommendations of the World HealthOrganization, is a necessity. One-third of chemical drugs are produced by using plants andthere is a high potential to produce more drugs from plants. Medicinal plants are helpful inthe management of various conditions, especially bacterial diseases. Although there is notenough scientific evidence regarding the clinical effectiveness of herbal drugs for the treatmentof brucellosis, there is strong evidence on the antimicrobial effects of herbal drugs to preventinfection. Therefore, this article seeks to describe the antibacterial effects of some plantderived essential oils or extracts, so that they can serve as promising choices to develop newanti-Brucella medications, as suitable alternatives to conventional antibiotics for brucellosis, asmuch as possible, taking into account the benefits of these herbal drugs.

Incidence of T3151 mutation in BCR/ABL-positive CML and ALL patients

OBJECTIVES： Targeted therapy of Philadelphia-positive ALL and CML patients using imatinib （IM） has caused significant changes in treatment course and has increased the survival of patients. A small group of patients show resistance to IM. Acquired mutations in tyrosine kinase domain of BCR-ABL protein are a mechanism for development of resistance. T315I is one of the most common acquired mutations in this domain, which occurs in ATP binding site and inhibits the formation of hydrogen bond with IM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of this mutation in BCR/ABL-positive CML and ALL patients. METHODS： To conduct this study, 60 BCR-ABL-positive patients （including 50 CML and 10 ALL patients） who were subject to treatment with IM were selected. After taking the samples, presence of T315I mutation was assessed using ARMS- PCR on cDNA and its polymorphism was evaluated by sequencing. RESULTS： The results showed that among 60 patients, only three patients had T315I mutation, which was detected using ARMS technique. The three patients bearing mutation were afflicted with CML and no significant association was found between blood parameters with duration of treatment in presence of mutation. CONCLUSIONS： The mutation was found in three CML patients, which indicated lower likelihood and diagnostic value of this mutation in ALL patients. Given the negative direct sequencing results in T3151 patients, it can be concluded that ARMS- PCR is a more sensitive technique when the number of cancer cells is low in patients during treatment.

Iran supports a great share of exotic and/or endemic plant genera and species. The genus Fritillaria(Liliaceae) is a precious part of this botanical richness with 19 species, of which 10 are endemic to the country. However, signs are mounting that the country is truly at a crossroads when it comes to preservation of this national wealth. In this regard, an effective conservation strategy should thoroughly consider the classification of Fritillaria, as conservation practices are compromised by knowledge gaps in systematics and taxonomy. As published studies on Fritillaria in Iran have been sporadic and limited in scope, the aim of this review is to provide information necessary to help bridge these information *** objective is to facilitate increased understanding of the geographic, taxonomic, cytogenetic and phylogenetic status of Iranian Fritilloria, which is vital to meeting the goal of sustainable conservation of the genus in Iran and neighboring areas.

Interacting Entropy-Corrected Holographic Scalar Field Models in Non-Flat Universe

In this work we establish a correspondence between the tachyon, k-essence and dilaton scalar field models with the interacting entropy-corrected holographic dark （ECHD） model in non-fiat FRW universe. The reconstruction of potentials and dynamics of these scalar fields according to the evolutionary behavior of the interacting ECHDE model are done. It has been shown that the phantom divide can not be crossed in ECHDE tachyon model while it is achieved for ECHDE k-essence and ECHDE dilaton scenarios. At last we calculate the limiting case of interacting ECHDE model, without entropy-correction.

Evaluation of miR-21 and miR-150 expression in immune thrombocytopenic purpura pathogenesis： a case-control study

BACKGROUND： Immune thrombocytopenic purpnra （ITP） is a common autoimmune disorder diagnosed with thrombocytopenia and bleeding symptoms due to production of autoantibodies （Abs） against platelets. Nowadays, microRNAs are known as novel biomarkers for diagnosis of diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression levels of miR-21 and miR-150 in ITP patients and determine the role of these miRNAs in ITP pathogenesis. MATERIALS and METHODS： Thirty newly diagnosed patients with acute ITP and 30 healthy subjects（ age and sex matched） as controls were enrolled in this study. The expression level ofmiR-21 and miR- 150 was investigated using Real-time-PCR. Comparison of demographic characteristics of the cases was done using independent t-test and chi-square test. Comparison of the expression level of miR-21 and miR-150 with the related parameters was done using independent t-test or Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman rho correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between the expression of miR-21 and miR-150 with demographic characteristics. RESULTS： The expression of miR-21, 150 in the patients was not different compared with the control group in general. A significant relationship between the expression of miR-21 with hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cell hemoglobin concentration was observed. DISCUSSION： Expression of miR-21 and miR-150 is not associated with pathogenesis of acute ITP and can involve the synergistic role of other miRNAs. Investigation of miR-21 and miR-150 expression along with other miRNAs and cytokines can be helpful in diagnosis and pathogenesis of ITP.
