Oral Health Status and Gingival Response to Three Different Restorative Materials among Saudi Patients: A Clinical &Histopathological Study

Background: The correlation between oral health and dental restoration is fundamental. For the gingival and periodontal tissues to stay healthy, dental restoration should be in regularity with the surrounding tissues. This study aims to assess the oral health status and histopathological gingival response to three different restorative materials among Saudi patients. Methods: The study groups consist of 240 patients (50% males and 50% females), aged 18 - 45, with inclusion and exclusion criteria in the study. Participants are divided into three equal groups: those with composite resin restorations, those with amalgam restorations and those with glass ionomer restorations. Biopsies were taken from adjacent gingival tissues. Clinical parameters were determined by: plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). All data were collected and evaluated by through statistical analysis. Results: The clinical findings of the current study revealed that amalgam restorations produce a higher means of PLI, GI and CAL compared with composite resin restorations and glass ionomer restorations, but not insignificant levels, except CAL (p = 0.004*). As for histopathological findings, there were significant differences in gingival tissue response to amalgam restorations, composite resin restorations and glass ionomer cement fillings, where there were statistically significant differences in numbers of chronic inflammatory cells (p Conclusion: At the end of the present study, we concluded that the amalgam restorations are less biocompatible compared to composite resin restorations and glass ionomer restorations.

Cancer is one of the most prevalent causes of mortality worldwide. In the cervix, it is confirmed to be caused by different high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types. Although many studies have already been conducted worldwide on the epidemiology of HPV infection and their oncogenic properties, limited data are available on HPV prevalence, incidence and its impacts in Egypt.

目的:研究原发性眼内良性病变的表现形式并指出其常见诱因。方法:从1997-07/2001-08,研究在真纳研究生医学中心眼科进行。2001-09在钱德拉医科大学医院眼科。研究只涉及患有原发性眼内良性病变的患者,他们均有院外住院病史。诊断基于患者的表征,临床检查,调查及切除肿块的组织病理学。共68名患者,年龄2mo ～60岁,男27例(39.7%),女41例(60.3%),35例(51.5%)左眼患病,33例(48.5%)右眼患病。结果:原发性眼内良性病变患者68例中,26例(38.2%)为眼睑浅表性毛细管血管瘤,5例(7.4%)为深部眼内血管瘤,5例(7.4%)为神经纤维瘤,4例(5.9%)为多发性神经纤维瘤,2例(2.9%)为神经瘤, 5例(7.4%)为多形性泪腺瘤(良性混合型细胞肿瘤)。结论:尽早住院检查,正确诊断和治疗可以避免并发症对患者视力甚至生命的威胁。

Analysis of Bifenthrin Degrading Bacteria from Rhizosphere of Plants Growing at Tannery Solid Waste

Bifenthrin is an insecticide which is used to control insects, mites, and ticks. It poses a solemn en-vironmental threat and health risk to living organisms. It may be bioaccumulated or biomagnified at different trophic levels in the food chain by biota. Microbes are hidden creature of earth’s biodiversity. For isolation of bifenthrin degrading bacteria, rhizospheric soil samples of plants like Pisum sativum, Triticun aestvum, Chenopodium album were taken from tannery solid waste, Kasur, Pakistan. Enrichment culture techniques were used for the isolation of bacterial strains that showed luxurious growth on minimal growth media with bifenthrin dose was selected for biodegradation study. Bacteria were further screened out based on their morphological, biochemical parameters and degradation efficiency. Furthermore the effect of different growth factors like temperature, pH, inoculum concencentration, minimal inhibitory concentration of heavy metals and antibiotics were also studied. Bacterial strains of Xanthomonas and Bacillus sp. were identified as efficient degrading microbes. Maximum bifenthrin utilization were observed at 25°C (pH 7), with 500 μL inoculum of Bacillus sp., while Xanthomonas sp. gave optimm utilization at 30°C (pH 7) at the same inoculum volume of bacteria. The Rf values of Bacillus sp. and Xanthomonas sp. were 0.91 and 0.90 respectively, which indicated their potential to metabolize bifenthrin into nontoxic forms. These strains can be used to clean up the sites polluted with pesticides and tannery wastes when present in rhizosphere of plants.

Development of 19-plex Y STR system and polymorphism studies in Pakistani population

For the development of 19-plex Y STR system and polymorphism studies in local ethnic populations sixteen markers of non-recombining regions (NRY) of Y chromosome, which show high power of discrimination among individuals, were selected in this study. Blood samples (600) were collected from the males of three most common castes of Pakistani population (Arain, Awan and Rajput) with different parent lineages. Three markers (DYS385a/b, DYS389I/II and YCAIIa/b) among 16 Y STRs are double-targeted regions of the Y chromosome and thus provide two polymorphic peaks for each respective primer set. These 16 Y-STRs were developed into Megaplex system for simultaneous amplification of all markers within the population. The overall power of discrimination observed in focused populations was 60.5%, 66.5% and 55% in Rajput, Awan and Arain casts respectively. This discrimination power will be helpful in human identification for forensic casework studies including sexual assaults and paternity testing.

Rice is an important crop and the food security of the world is strongly associated with it as it is the staple food of half of the world’s population. Among various agro-management practices seedling age and nitrogen rates significantly affected its growth, development and yield components. Rice cultivars performed differently when transplanted in field at varying seedling ages depending upon their genetic makeup and adoptability to certain environmental conditions. Seedling age plays an important role in yield contributing parameters like number of productive tillers, panicle length, filled grains panicle-1 and 1000-kernel weight leading to higher paddy yield in different rice cultivars and hybrids. Nitrogen is required in huge quantity in rice production as it is an important constituent of plant parts and processes. Paddy yield increases significantly with the increase in nitrogen rate but after a certain limit yield starts decreasing. Keeping in view the significance of seedling age and nitrogen rates in different rice cultivars and hybrids, an effort has been made to review some research work already conducted and will be helpful to the researchers and scientists to plan future strategies.

The Role of Vitamin E in Cerebral Hypoxia: An Ultrastructural Study

Hypoxia, due to impaired cerebral blood flow, has hazardous effects on brain structure and function. To minimize as much as possible the neurological consequences from hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, neuro-protective strategies are urgently required. Vitamin E has been shown to have protective effects against cerebral ischemia, possibly due to its anti-oxidant effects. Thirty albino rats, of both sexes, were obtained from the animal house at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University. They were divided into three groups;each included 10 animals: Group A was considered as a control one, animals of Group B were subjected to a permanent link to the carotid arteries on both sides and animals of Group C underwent permanent link to carotid arteries on both sides and concomitantly were given Vitamin E as an anti-oxidant. Animals of Group C were injected by Vitamin E (equivalent to 15 mg/day), into the peritoneal cavity as a single dose for a week and after the prescribed period the mice were sacrificed under deep anesthesia and their brains were extracted and prepared for an electron microscopic study of brain tissue. Specimens from animals of Group B showed a large number of neurons that had been deteriorated. Mitochondria were the most affected organelles. There were a large number of dark cells which probably resulted from shrunken nerve cells and exhibited opaque nuclei. The number of affected nerve cells was much lower in brain tissues from animals of the Group C which revealed absence of dark cells. The study did not disclose any similar changes in brain tissues of the control group animals. Our results suggested that treatment with Vitamin E after hypoxia-ischemia led to a neuro-protective effect that appeared in reduction of cell death of neurons. Thus, the present study provides an evidence that Vitamin E protects the brain tissue of the consequences of hypoxia caused by ischemia in the tested experimental animals. 在Mn髤模板作用下,2,6-diacetylpyridine(DAP)及合适链状胺化合物通过[1+1]环缩合反应,合成了3个大环席夫碱配合物,并进行了红外、元素分析、质谱及电导率等表征及研究。测得了配合物[MnL1(CH3CN)](ClO4)2的晶体结构,中心离子呈现出稍微扭曲的五角锥配位构型。研究了配合物对***(ATCC 6633),***(ATCC 7064),***(ATCC 373)(gram-positive bacterial strains),***(PTCC 10009),***(MTCC 109),and ***(lio)(gram-negative bacterial strains)的抗菌活性。结果显示[MnL3](ClO4)2抗菌活性明显优于[MnL1(CH3CN)](ClO4)2and[MnL2](ClO4)2。在25℃条件下0.1 mol·L-1 KCl溶液中,通过电位计量法测定了化合物的质子化常数。
