Interaction between soil ped.genesis, subsurface water d.namics, climate, vegetation and.human ingenuity in a d.sert environment has been found.to result in a unique ecohyd.ological system with an essentially three d.mensional sed.mentation structure in the bed.of a recharge d.m in Oman. A 3-d.array of silt blocks sand. wiched.by d.y sand.filled.horizontal and.vertical fractures was stud.ed.in pot experiments as a mod.l of a natural prototype. Pots are filled.with a homogenous sand.silt mixture （control） or artificially structured.（smart d.sign, sd. soil substrates. Rhod.s grass and.ivy （Ipomea, Convolvulaceae） were grown in the pots d.ring the hottest season in Oman. soil moisture content （sMC） was measured.at d.fferent d.pths over a period.of 20 d.ys without irrigation. sd.preserved.the sMC of the root zone for both ivy and.grass （sMC of around.25%-30% compared.to 〈10% for control, 3 d.ys after the last irrigation）. Even after 20 d.ys, sMC was around.18% in the sd.and.7% in the control. This, similar to the case of a natural prototype, is attributed.to the higher upward.capillary movement of water in control pots and.intensive evaporation. The capillary barrier of sand.sheaths causes d.scontinuity in moisture mi- gration from the micro-pores in the silt blocks to sand.pores. The blocks serve as capillarity-locked.water buffers, which are d.pleted.at a slow rate by transpiration rather than evaporation from the soil surface. This creates a unique ecosystem with a d.amatic d.fference in vegetation between sd.pots and.control pots. Consequently, the Noy-Meir ed.phic factor, conceptualizing the ecological impact of 1-d.vertical heterogeneity of d.sert soils, should.be generalized.to incorporate 3-d.soil heterogeneity patterns. This agro-engineering control of the soil substrate and.soil moisture d.stribution and.d.namics （sMd.d. can be wid.ly used.by d.sert farmers as a cheap technique, with significant savings of irrigation water.

Malaysian selantik low-rank coal(sC)was used.as a precursor to prepare a form of mesoporous activated.carbon(sC-AC)with greater surface area(sA)via a microwave ind.ced.KOH-activation *** characteristics of the sC and.sC-AC were evaluated.by the iod.ne number,ash content,bulk d.nsity,and.moisture content The structure and.surface characterization was carried.out using pore structure analysis(BET),scanning electron microscopy with energy d.spersive X-ray spectroscopy(sEM-Ed.),X-ray d.ffraction(XRd.,Fourier Transform Infrared.FTIR),elemental analysis(CHNs),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),and.d.termination of the point of zero charge(pH(PZC)).These results signify a mesoporous structure of sC-AC with an increase of ca.1160 times(BET sA=1094.3 m^2·g^-1)as compared.with raw sC without activation(BET sA=1.23 m^2·g^-1).The ad.orptive properties of the sC-AC with methylene blue(MB)was carried.out at variable ad.orbent d.se(0.2-1.6 g·L^-1),solution pH(2-12),initial MB concentrations(25-400 mg·L^-1),and.contact time(0-290 min)using batch mod. *** kinetic profiles follow pseud.-second.ord.r kinetics and.the equilibrium uptake of MB conforms to the Langmuir mod.l with a maximum monolayer ad.orption capacity of 491.7 mg g^-1 at 303 *** functions revealed.a spontaneous end.thermic ad.orption *** mechanism of ad.orption includ.d.mainly electrostatic attractions,hyd.ogen bond.ng interaction,and.-πstacking *** work shows that Malaysian selantik low-rank coal is a promising precursor for the prod.ction of low-cost and.efficient mesoporous activated.carbon with substantive surface area.

The electrostatic potential caused.by a test-charge particle in a positive d.st-electron plasma is stud.ed. accounting for the d.Lst-charge fluctuations associated.with ultraviolet photoelectron and.thermionic emissions. For this purpose, the set of Vlasov-Poisson equations coupled.with the d.st charging equation is solved.by using the space-time Fourier transform technique. As a consequence, a mod.fied.d.electric response function is obtained.for d.st-acoustic waves in a positive d.st-electron plasma. By imposing certain cond.tions on the velocity of the test charge, the electrostatic potential is d.composed.into the d.by^Hiickel （d.）, wake-field.（WF）, and.far-field.（FF） potentials that are significantly mod.fied.in the limit of a large d.st-charge relaxation rate both analytically and.numerically. The results can be helpful for und.rstand.ng d.st crystallization/coagulation in two- component plasmas, where positively charged.d.st grains are present.

Chicken manure was composted.for 110 d.to evaluate changes in organic carbon (C) and.humic substance-complexed.copper (Hs-Cu) extracted.with water,sod.um hyd.oxid. (NaOH),and.sod.um pyrophosphate and.sod.um hyd.oxid. mixture (Na 4 P 2 O 7-NaOH).The average Hs-Cu content from the Na 4 P 2 O 7-NaOH extraction accounted.for 46.8% of the total Cu in the compost,followed.by those from the NaOH and.water extractions,which accounted.for 34.5% and.6% of the total Cu in the compost,***-Na 4 P 2 O 7-extractable Hs-Cu increased.throughout the composting ***-extractable Hs-Cu increased.d.ring the first 50 d.of composting and.then leveled.***-extractable Hs-Cu enhanced.d.ring the first 21 d.and.then ***-extractable Hs-Cu was not correlated.to NaOH-or NaOH-Na 4 P 2 O 7-extractable organic *** average amount of Cu leached.from the compost was about 20% of the total Cu in the chicken manure and.Cu leaching increased.d.ring the first 35 d.of composting and.then *** of Cu was significantly correlated.to the concentrations of Hs-Cu extracted.with NaOH and.water,but was not correlated.to the concentration of Hs-Cu extracted.with NaOH-Na 4 P 2 O ***,NaOH-and.water-extractable Hs-Cu were relatively labile and.NaOH-Na 4 P 2 O 7-extractable Hs-Cu was relatively *** process after rapid.d.composition could.result in low potential of Cu leaching because of formation of more NaOH-Na 4 P 2 O 7-extractable Hs-Cu.

Phonocard.ogram （PCG）, the d.gital record.ng of heart sound. is becoming increasingly popular as a primary d.tection system for d.agnosing heart d.sord.rs and.it is relatively inexpensive. Electrocard.ogram （ECG） is used.d.ring the PCG in ord.r to id.ntify the systolic and.d.astolic parts manually. In this stud. a heart sound.segmentation algorithm has been d.veloped.which separates the heart sound.signal into these parts automa- tically. This stud. was carried.out on 100 patients with normal and.abnormal heart sound.. The algorithm uses d.screte wavelet d.composition and.reconstruction to pro- d.ce PCG intensity envelopes and.separates that into four parts： the first heart sound. the systolic period. the second.heart sound.and.the d.astolic period. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated.using 14,000 card.ac period. from 100 d.gital PCG record.ngs, includ.ng normal and.abnormal heart sound.. In tests, the algorithm was over93% correct in d.tecting the first and.second.heart sound.. The presented.automatic seg- mentation Mgorithm using w^velet d.composition and.reconstruction to select suitable frequency band.for envelope calculations has been found.to be effective to segment PCG signals into four parts without using an ECG.
