Evaluation of Predictors of Suicidal Re-Attempt in Pediatric Patients in the Emergency Department

Background: Suicidal attempt in children is a serious public health problem. A proper identification of features of suicide-related behavior may help physicians to develop an accurate approach. The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of children with poisoning due to suicidal attempt and to determine the risk factors of suicidal re-attempt in the Emergency Department (ED) via a simple questionnaire. Methods: We collected medical data of patients under 18 years who were admitted to our ED with intoxication due to suicidal attempt, retrospectively. General characteristics of patients were evaluated. Patients were divided into 2 groups as 1) High risk: patients with repetitive suicide attempt;2) Low risk: patients with first time suicidal attempt. Results: A total of 57 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 15.91 ± 0.97. Majority of the patients were female (73.7%). Analgesics were the most frequent abused drugs with a ratio of 51.1%. It is determined that the most important variables affecting the risk of suicidal re-attempt are “idea about the suicide” and “purpose”. It was determined that patients with an idea of repetitive suicide (I will try again) and whose purpose was to die (I wish I have died) were in the most risky group with a history of previous suicidal attempt. Conclusion: This study suggests that answers of the pediatric patients to some question have a potential to predict the high risk patients. The risk of suicidal re-attempt may be predicted by the answers given to these questions: 1) What is your idea about suicide? 2) What was your purpose?

Parenteral Insecticide Injection for Suicidal Attempt:A Case Report

Poisoning by insecticides is a public health problem, particularly in developing countries. Insecticide poisoning may occur due to ingestion, inhalation or skin contact and is commonly associated with psychiatric illnesses. However, intramuscular injection of these chemicals is rare in the literature. In this report, we represent you a case of 35-year-old female who presented to our Emergency Department due to parenteral insecticide injection after an argument with her husband. A tender swelling was observed on the upper region of left upper extremity, underneath the shoulder. The patient did not develop any signs and symptoms of organophosphate poisoning and, after follow-up, the patient was discharged with total recovery. Even in the absence of systemic effects of OP, clinicians must be aware of possible complications of intramuscular injection of OPs such as cellulitis and abscess. We aimed to raise the awareness to this rare condition.

Clinical and Demograhical Characteristics of Patients with Maxillofacial Trauma in the Emergency Department

Objective: We aimed to investigate the clinical and demographical characteristics of patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) due to maxillofacial trauma (MFT). Methods: This sectional and retrospective study was conducted in Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital ED between 1st March 2010 and 31st March 2017. Into the study, patients with MFT older than 15 years of age were included. Characteristics of patients were recorded. Patients’ characteristics were compared according to presence of fractures. Results: Mean age of the patients was 41.1 ± 18.0 years and a statistically significant relationship was determined between age and presence of fracture (p > 0.05). Of the patients, 74.5% was male and fracture presence was significantly more in males than females (p 0.05). Conclusion: The MFT is a pathology that either leads to its own, or can lead to life-threatening consequences as a result of additional organ injuries. The physician evaluating the patient should determine the MFT and additional pathologies and ensure that the interventions start as soon as possible.

Analysis of Triage Application in Emergency Department

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to determine the current status of Green Zone (GZ) application in our Emergency Department (ED). We also sought workload and economic burden of GZ on both healthcare providers and health system. Methods: We analyzed the medical data of patients admitted to the GZ of our ED in a three-year period. Demographical characteristics, complaints on admission, number of revisits and economical cost of the patients were determined. Results: During 3-year period a total of ~900,000 patients were admitted to Hitit University Corum Education and Research Hospital ED. Of these patients, 87,089 patients were treated in GZ. Upper respiratory system disease was the leading complaint on admission. Mean length of stay in ED for these patients was found to be 22.2 minutes. When repeated visits were investigated, it was found that 3029 patients presented twice to the GZ. Conclusion: Certain measures to reduce number of non-emergent patients presenting to ED must be taken immediately. Or else, dissatisfaction of both healthcare providers and patients shall remain as a potential cause of unwanted events in over-crowded EDs in the future.

Heating rate effects for the melting transition of Pt-Ag-Au nanoalloys

The classical molecular dynamics simulations in canonical NVT ensemble conditions are used to investigate the melting transition in different heating rates of Pt-Ag-Au ternary *** order to obtain the initial configurations used in the molecular dynamics simulations,optimizing the chemical ordering of Pt_(13)AgnAu_(42−n)(n=0-42)ternary nanoalloys was performed using the Basin-Hopping algorithm which would not allow changes in the icosahedron *** Gupta many-body potential was used to model interatomic interactions in both molecular dynamics simulations and optimization *** melting transitions of selected Pt-Ag-Au nanoalloys were explored using caloric curves and Lindemann *** have been two identified types of melting mechanisms,one includes sudden jump behavior in the caloric curve and the other is an isomerization while melting *** temperature range in which the isomerization takes place depends on the heating rate value.

A theoretical study on chemical ordering of 38-atom trimetallic Pd-Ag-Pt nanoalloys

In this study,truncated octahedron(TO)structure is selected for further analysis and we focus on 38-atom Pd-Pt-Ag trimetallic *** best chemical ordering structures of PdnAg32-nPt6 trimetallic nanoalloys are obtained at Gupta *** structures with the lowest energy at Gupta level are then re-optimized by density functional theory(DFT)relaxations and DFT results confirm the Gupta level calculations with small shifts on bond lengths indicating TO structure is favorable for 38-atom of PdnAg32-nPt6 trimetallic *** DFT excess energy analysis shows that Pd8Ag24Pt6 composition has the lowest excess energy value in common with excess energy analysis at Gupta *** Pd8Ag24Pt6 composition,eight Pd atoms are central sites of 8(111)hexagonal facets of TO,24 Ag atoms locate on surface,and 6 Pt atoms locate at the core of the *** is also obtained that all of the compositions except Pd18Ag14Pt6 and Pd20Ag12Pt6 exhibit a octahedral Pt ***,it is observed that there is a clear tendency for Ag atoms to segregate to the surface and also Pt atoms prefer to locate at core due to order parameter(R)variations.

Relationship between pinguecula formation and exposure to tandoor ovens in a hospital-based study

AIM: To investigate the relationship between pinguecula and the use of tandoor ***: A total of 539 women, ranging in age from20 to 86 y who attended an outpatient clinic were enrolled. All the patients were asked whether they used tandoor ovens. Women exposed to tandoor ovens(n =286) were accepted as participants in the study group and they were compared with participants in the control group(n =253). The age, presence of pinguecula,duration of exposure to tandoor ovens as years and occupations were recorded for all the ***: Mean duration for exposure to tandoor was20.26y(range 1-62y) in the study group. The rate of pinguecula in the study group was 82.2%(235/286), and the rate in the control group was 37.5%(95/253); this difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).Pinguecula was seen in 61.2%(330/539) of all the ***: Pinguecula is strongly associated with exposure to tandoor ovens.

Sprouts are ready-to-eat and are recognized worldwide as functional components of the human *** advances in innovative agricultural techniques could enable an increase in the production of healthy *** use of light-emitting diode(LED)in indoor agricultural production could alter the biological feedback loop,increasing the functional beneﬁts of plant foods such as wheat and lentil sprouts and promoting the bioavailability of *** effects of white(W),red(R),and blue(B)light were investigated on the growth parameters and nutritional value of wheat and lentil *** the laboratory,seeds were sown under three different LED treat-ments:white,red,and blue light,while normal incandescent light served as a *** seed germina-tion improved by 18.34%and 12.67%for wheat and 18.34%and 12.67%for lentil sprouts under LED treatments R and B,*** increase in total soluble protein and sugar by 33.4%and 9.23%in wheat and by 31.5%and 5.87%in lentils was observed under the R LED *** C concentrations in wheat and lentils were signiﬁcantly increased by R LED compared to all other *** parameters,including potassium and sodium concentrations,were signiﬁcantly increased under red and blue light compared to the control;white light,on the other hand,signiﬁcantly decreased all these *** to the experimental data,red and blue LED light could be beneﬁcial in the production of functional wheat and lentil sprouts with high nutrient concentrations.

Effect of acetyl L-carnitine on human retinal pigment epithelium-19 cells in hypoxic conditions

AIM:To investigate the effect of acetyl-L-carnitine(ALCAR)on cell viability,morphological integrity,and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)expression in human retinal pigment epithelium(ARPE-19)cells using a hypoxic ***:In the first set of experiments,the optimal CoCl_(2) dose was determined by exposing ARPE-19 cell cultures to different *** evaluate the effect of ALCAR on cell viability,five groups of ARPE-19 cell culture were established that included a control group,a sham group(200μM CoCl_(2)),and groups that received 1,10 and 100 mM doses of ALCAR combined with 200μM CoCl_(2),*** cell viability was measured by MTT *** morphological characteristics of cells were observed by an inverted phase contrast *** levels of VEGF and HIF-1α secretion by ARPE-19 cells were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)***:ARPE-19 cells were exposed to different doses of CoCl_(2) in order to create a hypoxia ***,when exposed to a concentration of 200μM CoCl_(2),a notable decrease in viability to 83% was *** was found to increase the cell viability at 1 mM and 10 mM concentrations,while the highest concentration(100 mM)did not have an added *** cell viability was found to be significantly higher in the groups treated with a concentration of 1 mM and 10 mM ALCAR compared to the Sham group(P=0.041,P=0.019,respectively).The cell viability and morphology remained unaffected by the greatest dose of ALCAR(100 mM).The administration of 10 mM ALCAR demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the levels of VEGF and HIF-1α compared with the Sham group(P=0.013,P=0.033,respectively).CONCLUSION:The findings from the current study indicate that ALCAR could represent a viable therapeutic option with the potential to open up novel treatment pathways for retinal diseases,particular relevance for age-related macular degeneration(AMD).However,to fully elucidate ALCAR’s application
