Effects of the seasonal variation in the phytochemical composition and bioactivities of the wild halophyte Suaeda fruticosa

Suaeda fruticosa is an edible medicinal species belonging to the Amaranthaceae (Chenopodiaceae) family widely distributed in the Mediterranean regions, especially in Tunisia. This species shoots change their colour from green to red-violet along the different seasons, being an interesting matrix to study for its chemical composition. Therefore, in a ground-breaking study, the hydromethanolic extracts of green and red-violet Tunisian S. fruticosa shoots were profiled for their individual phenolic compounds and betalains by High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with a Diode-Array Detector and Mass Spectrometry by Electrospray Ionization (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS), and the in vitro antioxidant, antibacterial, and hepatotoxic properties were also assessed. The obtained results revealed that the hydromethanolic extracts contain interesting levels of phenolic compounds especially O-glycosylated and acylated flavonoids, while betacyanins were the main betalain compounds found. As expected, red-violet shoots were richer in phenolic compounds (45.5 ± 0.2 mg/g extract) and betalains (33.3 ± 0.2 mg/g extract) than greener shoots. Flavonoid/betalains rich extracts presented lower EC50 values for ABTS+, DPPH, and TBARS;as also lower MIC values against Gram-positive bacteria. This study showed that the wild halophyte growing in a hard environment, were drought and salinity are dominant, is an important source of flavonoids and betanin, important molecules that can find application in different industries, given the constant demands for natural bioactives and colouring compounds. Overall, these natural compounds may be valorised and further investigated to validate their potential as functional ingredients.

Price Analyses of the Brazilian Citrus Supply Chain

The Brazilian citrus chain is comprised by an upstream farm sector, made up of numerous heterogeneous （by size and technology） farm units serviced by input suppliers, and a downstream segment consisting of a small number of processing industries. Our study examines the behavior of citrus pricing along this supply chain, focusing on the relationship between orange juice prices established in international markets and orange fruit prices paid to Brazilian farmers. Results indicate that the price of orange fruit is fundamentally linked to the price of its juice, regardless of data source considered for testing. Evidence was found indicating that there is asymmetry of price transmission within the Brazilian orange sector, with juice price increases being transmitted to the farmer in smaller proportions than juice price decreases. The results of our study did not give a particularly strong indication of the cause of this price asymmetry.

BACKGROUND Hepatic infarctions(HI)are ischemic events of the liver in which a disruption in the blood flow to the hepatocytes leads to focal ischemia and *** HI are due to occlusive events in the liver’s blood vessels,but non-occlusive HI may *** are associated with disruption of microvasculature,such as in diabetic *** HI usually presents as peripheral lesions with clear borders,irregular nodular lesions may occur,indistinguishable from liver neoplasms and presenting a diagnostic *** SUMMARY We report a case of multiple extensive HI in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus,who first presented to the emergency room with diabetic *** then developed jaundice,thrombocytopenia,and a marked elevation of serum *** ultrasound of the liver showed the presence of multiple irregular *** investigation with a computerized tomography scan confirmed the presence of multiple hypoattenuating nodules with irregular borders and heterogeneous *** lesions were considered highly suggestive of a primary neoplasm of the *** the patient was clinically stable,his bilirubin levels remained persistently elevated,and he underwent an ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy of the largest *** results revealed extensive ischemic necrosis of hepatocytes,with no signs of associated *** months after the symptoms,the patient showed great improvement in all clinical and laboratory parameters and extensive regression of the lesions on imaging *** This case highlights that diabetic ketoacidosis can cause non-occlusive HI,possibly presenting as nodular lesions indistinguishable from neoplasms.

Determination of the Bromine, Manganese and Antimony in Nicotiana tabacum Solanaceae by Using the Neutron Activation Analysis Technique

Tobacco addiction has been mentioned as a leading cause of preventable illnesses and premature disability. Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer and one of the factors that most contribute to the occurrence of heart diseases, among others. The herbaceous species Nicotiana tabacum is a plant of the solanaceae family used for tobacco production. Some authors have conducted research about heavy metals and the toxicity of tobacco. It is, frequently, found in low concentrations in the ground, and superficial and underground waters, even though they do not have environmental anthropogenic contributions. However, with the increase of industrial activities and mining together with the agrochemical use of contaminated organic and inorganic fertilizers, an alteration of the geochemical cycle occurs. As a consequence, the natural flow of these materials increases and is released into the biosphere, where they are often accumulated in the superior layer of the ground, accessible to the roots of the plants. During planting and plant development, fertilizers and insecticides, including organochlorines and organophosphates, are used;consequently, the smoke from cigarette smoking presents various toxic substances, such as bromine (Br), manganese (Mn) and antimony (Sb), elements studied in this work. The procedures for the preparation of the samples were carried out in our laboratories and submitted to irradiation with thermal neutrons at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP), in the Atomic Energy Institute IEA-R1 research reactor. The irradiated material was, then, analyzed by gamma spectrometry, using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe).

To evaluate the therapeutic effects of bone marrow-derived CD11b+CD14+ monocytes in a murine model of chronic liver *** liver damage was induced in C57BL/6 mice by administration of carbon tetrachloride and ethanol for 6 mo. Bone marrow-derived monocytes isolated by immunomagnetic separation were used for therapy. The cell transplantation effects were evaluated by morphometry, biochemical assessment, immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***11b+CD14+ monocyte therapy significantly reduced liver fibrosis and increased hepatic glutathione levels. Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β, in addition to pro-fibrotic factors, such as IL-13, transforming growth factor-β1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 also decreased, while IL-10 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 increased in the monocyte-treated group. CD11b+CD14+ monocyte transplantation caused significant changes in the hepatic expression of α-smooth muscle actin and *** therapy is capable of bringing about improvement of liver fibrosis by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as increasing anti-fibrogenic factors.

Analysing vaccine efficacy evaluated in phase 3 clinical trials carried out during outbreaks

In this paper we examine several definitions of vaccine efficacy(VE)that we found in the literature,for diseases that express themselves in outbreaks,that is,when the force of infection grows in time,reaches a maximum and then *** fact that the disease occurs in outbreaks results in several problems that we *** propose a mathematical model that allows the calculation of VE for several *** trials usually needs a large number of volunteers that must be ***,all volunteers should be enrolled in approximately the same time,but this is generally impossible for logistic reasons and they are enrolled in a fashion that can be replaced by a continuous density function(for example,a Gaussian function).The outbreak can also be replaced by a continuous density function,and the use of these density functions simplifies the ***,for example Gaussian functions,one of the problems one can immediately notice is that the peak of the two curves do not occur at the same *** model allows us to conclude:First,the calculated vaccine efficacy decreases when the force of infection increases;Second,the calculated vaccine efficacy decreases when the gap between the peak in the force of infection and the peak in the enrollment rate increases;Third,different trial protocols can be simulated with this model;different vaccine efficacy definitions can be calculated and in our simulations,all result are approximately the *** final,and perhaps most important conclusion of our model,is that vaccine efficacy calculated during outbreaks must be carefully examined and the best way we can suggest to overcome this problem is to stratify the enrolled volunteer's in a cohort-by-cohort basis and do the survival analysis for each cohort,or apply the Cox proportional hazards model for each cohort.

Purification of Bromelain Enzyme from Curaua （Ananaserectifofius LB Smith） White Variety, by Aqueous Two-Phase System PEG 4000/Potassium Phosphate

The Curaua. （Ananaserectifolius LB Smith） is a species belonging to the family Bromeliaceae. Occurs in the states of Para, Amazonas, Amapa, Acre, Mato Grosso and Goia s, has two varieties, purple and white, and its fibers are used in automotive and textile industries due to its strength, softness and lightweight. Currently, only the fiber is used in industry, the rest is considered waste However, this residue contains compounds with important properties to be discovered and studied. An enzyme complex found in this residue is bromelain, a group of proteolysis＇ enzymes with application in several areas such as in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Today, its use is aiming the pharmaceutical industry, the production of ointments, gels, creams and lotions because they offer a wide range of therapeutic efficacies： antiedemas, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and fibrinolytic activities. This work studied the enzyme purification and recovery presented in the leaves of Curaua by means of an ATPS （aqueous two-phase system） PEG 4000/potassium phosphate. The protein content was measured by Bradford reagent and the enzymatic activity was measured by the Biuret reagent. Batch assays were performed aiming the enzyme extraction and recuperation, using the partition coefficient as indicator. It was used pH 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0, varying the proportional composition between the polymeric and the saline phases （tie-lines）. The white variety of Curaua. was used. The best purification factor was 4.53 and about 113.04 μg/mL of total protein measured by Bradford.

AIM:To verify the methylation status of CDH1, DAPK, COX2, hMLH1 and CDKN2A genes and to evaluate their association with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-cagA+ and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infections in gastric ***: Methylation-specific PCR (MSP) assay was performed in 89 primary gastric carcinomas (intestinal and diffuse types). Microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis was performed using the BAT26 primer set and PCR products were analyzed with the ABI PRISM 3100 Genetic Analyzer using Genescan 3.7 software (Applied Biosystems). Detection of H. pylori and genotyping were performed by PCR, using specifi c primers for ureaseC and cagA genes. The presence of EBV was assessed by in situ hybridization. Statistical analyses were performed using the χ2 or Fisher's exact ***: The most frequent hypermethylated gene was COX-2 (63.5%) followed by DAPK (55.7%), CDH1 (51%), CDKN2A (36%) and hMLH1 (30.3%). Intestinal and diffuse adenocarcinomas showed different methylation profiles and there was an association between methylation of E-CDH1 and H. pylori-cagA+ in the intestinal adenocarcinoma type. MSI was correlated with hMLH1 methylation. There was an inverse correlation between DAPK hypermethylation and ***: We found a strong association between CDH1 methylation and H. pylori-cagA+ in intestinal-type gastric cancer, association of MSI and better prognosis and an heterogeneous COX-2 overexpression.
