The need for miniaturized,fully integrated semiconductor lasers has stimulated significant research efforts into realizing unconventional configurations that can meet the performance requirements of a large spectrum of applications,ranging from communication systems to *** demonstrate a hybrid,silicon photonicscompatible photonic crystal(PhC)laser architecture that can be used to implement cost-effective,high-capacity light sources,with high side-mode suppression ratio and milliwatt output output *** emitted wavelength is set and controlled by a silicon PhC cavity-based reflective filter with the gain provided by a Ⅲ–Ⅴ-based reflective semiconductor optical amplifier(RSOA).The high power density in the laser cavity results in a significant enhancement of the nonlinear absorption in silicon in the high Q-factor PhC *** heat generated in this manner creates a tuning effect in the wavelength-selective element,which can be used to offset external temperature fluctuations without the use of active *** approach is fully compatible with existing fabrication and integration technologies,providing a practical route to integrated lasing in wavelength-sensitive schemes.

Body shape and metabolic rate can be important determinants of animal performance,yet often their effects on influential traits are evaluated in a non-integrated *** creates an important gap because the integration between shape and metabolism may be crucial to evaluate metabolic scaling ***,we measured standard metabolic rate in 1-and 2-years old juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta,and used a geometric morphometrics approach to extricate the effects of ontogeny and size on the link between shape and metabolic *** evidenced near-isometric ontogenetic scaling of metabolic rate with size,but also a biphasic pattern driven by a significant change in metabolic scaling,from positive to negative ***,the change in metabolic allometry parallels an ontogenetic change from elongate to deep-bodied *** is consistent with the dynamic energy budget(DEB)and surface area(SA)theories,but not with the resource transport network theory which predicts increasing allometric exponents for trends towards more robust,three-dimensional *** addition,we found a relationship between body shape and size independent metabolic rate,with a positive correlation between robustness and metabolic rate,which fits well within the view of Pace-of-Life Syndromes(POLS).Finally,our results align with previous studies that question the universality of metabolic scaling exponents and propose other mechanistic models explaining the diversity of metabolic scaling relationships or emphasizing the potential contribution of ecological factors.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of human chorionic gonadotropins(hCG)and equine chorionic gonadotropins(eCG)on in vitro gilt oocyte maturation and embryonic development,using frozen semen for ***:Two independent experiments(6 replicates each)were carried out to evaluate gilt oocyte maturation,and fertilization and embryonic development by using ovaries from a local ***,712 oocytes were randomly distributed in four-well dishes to receive Novormon(eCG 5.0 IU),PG600(eCG 5.0 IU and hCG 2.5 IU),Chorulon(hCG 5.0 IU),or no *** were incubated with 5%CO2,95%air and saturation humidity at 39℃for 44 *** of the oocytes to metaphaseⅡwas assessed by using the aceto-orcein *** addition,741 oocytes were used and randomly distributed in four-well dishes,and then oocyte maturation was carried out as mentioned,but matured oocytes were washed and placed in fertilization medium with frozen-thawed *** were co-incubated for 7 h,and then washed and placed in development medium,and incubated for further 7 days,at which time embryonic development was *** and embryo development media were not supplemented with the studied ***:Novormon(eCG)and PG600(eCG+hCG)treatments significantly improved the percentages of metaphaseⅡoocytes compared to the control group(P<0.05).Furthermore,a significant increase was also observed in the young blastocyst stage between the control group and the PG600 treatment group(P<0.05).Conclusions:Hormonal products Novormon(eCG)and PG600(eCG+hCG)can obtain the highest percentages of in vitro maturation in gilt oocytes;however,this effect is not transferred to fertilization rates.

AIM: To study whether matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is a key factor in epithelial damage in the dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) model of colitis in ***: MMP-9-deficient and wild-type (wt) mice were given 5% DSS in drinking water for 5 d followed by recovery up to 7 d. On d 5 and 12 after induction of colitis, gelatinases, MMP-2 and MMP-9, were measured in homogenates of colonic tissue by zymography and Western blot, whereas tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) were measured by reverse zymography. The gelatinolytic activity was also determined in supernatants of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) isolated from mice blood. Moreover, intestinal epithelial cells were stimulated with TNF-α to study whether these cells were able to produce MMPs. Finally, colonic mucosal lesions were measured by microscopic examination. RESULTS: On d 5 of colitis, the activity of MMP-9 was increased in homogenates of colonic tissues (0.24 ± 0.1 vs 21.3 ± 6.4, P < 0.05) and PMN from peripheral blood in wt (0.5 ± 0.1 vs 10.4 ± 0.7, P < 0.05), but not in MMP-9-deficient animals. The MMP-9 activity was also up-regulated by TNF-α in epithelial intestinal cells (2.5 ± 0.5 vs 14.7 ± 3.0, P < 0.05). Although colitis also led to increase of TIMP-1 activity, the MMP-9/TIMP-1 balance remained elevated. Finally, in the MMP-9-deficient colitic mice both the extent and severity of intestinal epithelialinjury were significantly attenuated when compared with wt mice. CONCLUSION: We conclude that DSS induced colitis is markedly attenuated in animals lacking MMP-9. This suggests that intestinal injury induced by DSS is modu-lated by MMP-9 and that inhibition of this gelatinase may reduce inflammation.

AIM To validate intracellular cytokine production functional assay as means of cell-mediated immunity monitoring of post-transplant patients with opportunistic infection(OI).METHODS Intracellular cytokine-producing CD4^+ and CD8^+ T-cell monitoring was carried out in 30 liver transplant(LTr) and 31 kidney transplant(KTr) recipients from 2010 to 2012. Patients were assessed in our Department of Immunology at the Clinical University ‘Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca-IMIB' in Murcia, Spain for one year following transplantation. FACS Canto Ⅱ flow cytometer was employed to quantify the intracellular production of IL-17, IFNγ and IL-10 cytokines on stimulated CD4^+CD69^+ and CD8^+CD69^+ T cells and BD FACS DIVA v.6 software was used to analysed the data. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS *** LTr with OI had significantly lower % of CD8^+CD69^+IFNγ^+T cells at 60(7.95 ± 0.77 vs 26.25 ± 2.09, P < 0.001), 90(7.47 ± 1.05 vs 30.34 ± 3.52, P < 0.001) and 180(15.31 ± 3.24 vs 24.59 ± 3.28, P = 0.01) d posttransplantation. Higher % of CD4^+CD69^+IL-10^+ as well as CD4^+CD69^+IL-17^+ T cells were yet reported at 30(14.06 ± 1.65 vs 6.09 ± 0.53, P = 0.0007 and 4.23 ± 0.56 vs 0.81 ± 0.14, P = 0.005; respectively), 60(11.46 ± 1.42 vs 4.54 ± 0.91, P = 0.001 and 4.21 ± 0.59 vs 1.43 ± 0.42, P = 0.03; respectively) and 90 d(16.85 ± 1.60 vs 4.07 ± 0.63, P < 0.001 and 3.97 ± 0.43 vs 0.96 ± 0.17, P = 0.001). Yet, KTr with OI had significantly lower percentage of CD4^+CD69^+IFNγ^+ at 30(11.80 ± 1.59 vs 20.64 ± 3.26, P = 0.035), 60(11.19 ± 1.35 vs 15.85 ± 1.58, P = 0.02), 90(11.37 ± 1.42 vs 22.99 ± 4.12, P = 0.028) and 180(13.63 ± 2.21 vs 21.93 ± 3.88, P = 0.008) d post-transplantation as opposed to CD4^+CD69^+IL-10^+ and CD8^+CD69^+IL-10^+ T cells which percentages were higher at 30(25.21 ± 2.74 vs 8.54 ± 1.64, P < 0.001 and 22.37 ± 1.35 vs 17.18 ± 3.54, P = 0.032; respectively), 90(16.85 ± 1.60 vs 4.07 ± 0.63, P < 0.001 and 23.06 ± 2.89 vs 10.19 ± 1.98, P = 0.002) and 18

Testicular function is regulated by pituitary hormones and also by paracrine and autocrine factors. A number of reports have pointed out the importance of estrogens and progesterone in male reproductive tract. Recently, we have reported in testicular biopsies from men with Sertoli Cell Only Syndrome (SCO) or Hypospermatogenesis (H) with Leydig cell hyperplasia (LCH) an increase in the expression of the TGFB1 and its receptors ALK1 and endoglin, which are involved in the proliferation of Leydig cells. The aim of the present work was to analyze the expression of aromatase, estrogen and progesterone receptors (ERs, PR) in pathological testicular biopsies with SCO or H with and without LCH. The ERs and CYP19 proteins were detected in the Leydig cells from all pathological biopsies analyzed. Biopsies with SCO or H with LCH showed an increment in the immunostaining of CYP19 and ERs in the Leydig cells respect to biopsies without LCH. The gene expression of CYP19 was increased in SCO or H biopsies with LCH respect to SCO and H biopsies without LCH. PR was localized in Leydig cells and showed a significant increment in biopsies with LCH respect from biopsies without LCH. The gene expression of both PRA and PRB was increased in biopsies with LCH respect to biopsies without LCH. In concussion, alterations in the gene expression of aromatase, ERs, and PR and the likely interactions of these systems with locally produced factors such as growth factors and cytokines, might lead to Leydig cell proliferation in testicular pathology.
