Transarterial chemoembolization using 40 μm drug eluting beads for hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM To assess the safety and efficacy of transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) using a new generation of 40 μm drug eluting beads in patients not eligible for curative *** Drug eluting bead TACE(DEB-TACE) using a new generation of microspheres(embozene tandem,40 μm) preloaded with 100 mg of doxorubicin was performed on 48 early or intermediate HCC patients with *** to therapy was assessed with Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors(RECIST) and modified RECIST(m RECIST) guidelines applied to computed tomography or magnetic resonance *** out of the 48 treated patients treated progressed on to receive liver orthotopic transplantation(OLT).This allowed for histological analysis on the treated explanted *** DEB-TACE with 40 μm showed a good safety profile without major complications or 30-d *** objective response rate of treated tumors was 72.6% and 26.7% according to m RECIST and RECIST *** examination in 11 patients assigned to OLT showed a necrosis degree > 90% in 78.6% of *** overall time to progression was 13 mo(11-21).CONCLUSION DEB-TACE with 40 μm particles is an effective treatment for the treatment of HCC in early-intermediate patients(Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A/B) with a good safety profile and good results in term of objective response rate and necrosis.

Analysis of heterogeneous characteristics in a geothermal area with low permeability and high temperature

An analytical methodology for reservoir characterization was applied in the central and southwestern zones of Los Humeros geothermal field(LHGF). This study involves analysis of temperature, pressure,enthalpy and permeability in wells and their distribution along the area. The wells located in the central western side of the geothermal field are productive, whereas those located at the central-eastern side are non-productive. Through temperature profiles, determined at steady state in the analyzed wells, it was observed that at bottom conditions(approximately 2300 m depth), temperatures vary between 280 and360℃. The temperatures are higher at the eastern side of central zone of LHGF. A review of transient pressure tests, laboratory measurements of core samples, and correlation of circulation losses during drilling suggest that permeability of the formation is low. The enthalpy behavior in productive wells shows a tendency of increase in the steam fraction. It was found that productivity behavior has inverse relation with permeability of rock formation. Further, it is observed that an imbalance exists between exploitation and recharge. It is concluded from the results that the wells located at central-eastern area have low permeability and high temperature, which indicates possibility of heat storage.

Background:To assess the clinical outcomes of the visian Implantable Collamer Lens(ICL)with a central port throughout 7 years of ***:Eighty-four eyes of 52 patients were evaluated over a follow-up period of 7 years after v4c ICL ***(UDvA)and corrected(CDvA)distance visual acuities,refraction,intraocular pressure(IOP),endothelial cell density(ECD)and vault were ***:The mean postoperative UDvA(logMAR)was 0.04±0.11,0.13±0.19 and 0.17±0.23 at 1-,5-and 7-years,respectively(PvA(logMAR)remains unchanged throughout a 7-year follow-up period(0.02±0.08 and 0.02±0.08,at 5-and 7-years,respectively,P=0.2).At all follow-up visits,more than 95%of the eyes achieved a CDvA of 20/25 or better and more than 85%a CDvA of 20/*** the end of the follow-up(7 years),no eye lost more lines of CDvA,56 eyes(66.7%)and 28 eyes(33.3%)gained lines of *** 7-years,the spherical equivalent was−0.62±0.62 *** significant increase in IOP(>20 mmHg or an increase higher than 5 mmHg)occurred in any case throughout the 7-year of *** loss in ECD from the preoperative baseline at the last follow-up visit was 2.6%.No intraoperative or postoperative complications or adverse events occurred during the follow-up ***:The outcomes of this study show the long-term viability of the v4c ICL implantation as a surgical option for the correction of myopia.

Downregulation of the Basic Peroxidase Isoenzyme from Zinnia elegans by Gibberellic Acid

Hypocotyl formation during the epigeal germination of seedlings is under strict hormonal regulation. In a 3 d old Zinnia elegans seedling system, gibberellic acid （GA3） exerts an opposite effect to that exerted by light on hypocotyl photomorphogenesis because GAz promotes an etiolated-like growth with an inhibition of radial （secondary） growth. For this reason, the effect of GA3 on the basic peroxidase isoenzyme from Z. elegans （ZePrx）, an enzyme involved in hypocotyl lignin biosynthesis, was studied. The results showed that GA3 reduces ZePrx activity, similarly to the way in which it reduces seedling secondary growth. This hormonal response is supported by the analysis of the ZePrx promoter, which contains four types of GA3-responsive ***： the W Box/O2S; the Pyr Box; the GARE; and the Amy Box. Taken together, these results suggest that ZePrx is directly regulated by GA3, with this effect matching the inhibitory effect of GA on the hypocotyl secondary growth.

Inventory and Geometrical Changes in Small Glaciers Covering Three Northern Patagonian Summits Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

In the last few decades, a large quantity of research has been performed to elucidate the current behavior of glaciers in southern Chile, especially with respect to the volumetric changes in the outlets of the Northern and Southern Patagonian Icefields （NPI and SPI, respectively）. Calculations have shown a generalized thinning and withdrawal, which greatly contributes to the increase in sea level attributed to the ice melt from non-polar glaciers. However, these icefields are surrounded by many small icecaps, which have＇yet to be studied in detail. A precise estimation of the volume of ice located in these mountain chains could provide new information with respect to this area＇s exact contribution to the increase in sea level. Thus, this study presents an inventory of relatively small Northern Patagonian glaciers in the surrounding of the three summits： Mount Queulat, and the Maca and Hudson volcanoes. The study used remote sensing techniques in a GIS environment to determine the margins, surface areas, thickness changes and hypsometry for the glaciated zones. Landsat images from different dates were analyzed using standard band ratio and screen delineation techniques. Additionally, digital elevation models from different dates were compared using map algebra, calculating thickness changes. Based on the results, we propose that there are important volumetric changes in the glaciers studied, whichcould be explained by precipitation trends in a general context, and an influence of the glaciers＇ sizes in some local response. Therefore, we suggest the exact contribution of the Patagonia to the increase in sea level corresponds to a regional pattern rather than just the behavior of a single ice field.

Legal Issues and Scientific Constraints in the Environmental Assessment of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in Mexico Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Gulf of Mexico

The largest accidental marine oil spill (4.9 million barrels) in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) seabed (1600 m) caused by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2010, put to the test once again the resilient capacity of the pelagic and benthic realms of this Large Marine Ecosystem. Many are the ecological services provided by its waters (fisheries, tourism, aquaculture and fossil fuel reserves) to neighboring countries (US, Mexico and Cuba). However, the unprecedented volumes of hydrocarbons, gas and chemical dispersants (Corexit) introduced in the system, represent ecological stressors whose deleterious effects are still the subject of civil claims and scientific controversy. Presumably, the short scale effects were confined to the Gulf’s northeastern shallow waters, and the combined actions of weathering, biodegradation, and oil recovery left the system almost under pre-spill conditions. Unfortunately, surface and subsurface oil plumes were detected in the spill aftermath, and their dispersion trajectories threatened Mexico EEZ. Surface oil slicks were detected in the pristine waters of northern Yucatán, while subsurface oil plumes from the Macondo’s well blowout were dangerously advancing southwest towards key fishing grounds in the northwestern GoM. This disaster prompted the Mexican government to implement an ambitious ocean monitoring program adopting a bottom-up approach focused on building a base line for more than 42 physicochemical and biological variables for water, sediment and biota from the continental shelf-slope region of the NW GoM. Technological constraints have precluded systematic observations in the vast Mexican EEZ that could discriminate natural variability and oil seep emissions from antropic disturbances. Therefore, preliminary risk analyses relied on seasonal and historical records. Background:The characterization of surface and canopy fuel loadings in fire-prone pine ecosystems is critical for understanding fire behavior and anticipating the most harmful ecological effects of ***,the joint consideration of both overstory and understory strata in burn severity assessments is often *** aim of this work was to assess the role of total,overstory and understory pre-fire aboveground biomass(AGB),estimated by means of airborne Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR)and Landsat data,as drivers of burn severity in a megafire occurred in a pine ecosystem dominated by Pinus pinaster *** the western Mediterranean ***:Total and overstory AGB were more accurately estimated(R^(2) equal to 0.72 and 0.68,respectively)from LiDAR and spectral data than understory AGB(R^(2)=0.26).Density and height percentile LiDAR metrics for several strata were found to be important predictors of *** severity responded markedly and non-linearly to total(R^(2)=0.60)and overstory(R ^(2)=0.53)AGB,whereas the relationship with understory AGB was weaker(R ^(2)=0.21).Nevertheless,the overstory plus understory AGB contribution led to the highest ability to predict burn severity(RMSE=122.46 in dNBR scale),instead of the joint consideration as total AGB(RMSE=158.41).Conclusions:This study novelty evaluated the potential of pre-fire AGB,as a vegetation biophysical property derived from LiDAR,spectral and field plot inventory data,for predicting burn severity,separating the contri-bution of the fuel loads in the understory and overstory strata in Pinus pinaster *** evidenced relationships between burn severity and pre-fire AGB distribution in Pinus pinaster stands would allow the implementation of threshold criteria to support decision making in fuel treatments designed to minimize crown fire hazard.
