Background and aim Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),the virus responsible for the current pandemic,can have multi-organ impact.Recent studies show that liver injury could be a manifestation of the disease,and that liver disease could also be related to a worse prognosis.Our aim was to compare the characteristics of patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)due to SARS-CoV-2 who required intubation versus stable hospitalized patients to identify the early biochemical predictive factors of a severe course of COVID-19 and subsequent requirement for intubation,specifically in Mexican.Methods This was an observational case-control study nested in a cohort study.Complete medical records of patients admitted for confirmed COVID-19 at a tertiary level center in Mexico City were reviewed.Clinical and biochemical data were collected,and the characteristics of patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV)(cases)were compared with stable hospitalized patients without ventilation(controls).Results We evaluated 166 patients with COVID-19 due to SARS-CoV-2 infection;114(68.7%)were men,the mean age was 50.6±13.3 years,and 27(16.3%)required IMV.The comparative analysis between cases and controls showed(respectively)significantly lower blood oxygen saturation(SpO_(2))(73.5±12.0%vs.83.0±6.8%,P<0.0001)and elevated alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(128(14–1123)IU/L vs.33(8–453)IU/L,P=0.003),aspartate aminotransferase(AST)(214(17–1247)vs.44(12–498)IU/L,P=0.001),lactic dehydrogenase(LDH)(764.6±401.9 IU/L vs.461.0±185.6 IU/L,P=0.001),and D-dimer(3463(524–34,227)ng/mL vs.829(152–41,923)ng/mL,P=0.003)concentrations.Patients in the cases group were older(58.6±12.7 years vs.49.1±12.8 years,P=0.001).Multivariate analysis showed that important factors at admission predicting the requirement for IMV during hospitalization for COVID-19 were AST≥250 IU/L(odds ratio(OR)=64.8,95%confidence interval(CI)7.5–560.3,P<0.0001)and D-dimer≥3500 ng/mL(OR=4.1,95%CI 1.2–13.7,P=0.02).Conclusions Our study confi

Agave guiengola Gentry is an endemic plant from a very small locality in Oaxaca,Mexico.Its conservation status is fragile and can rapidly worsen.Because of its scarcity,this agave has been used solely for ornamental purposes,but it could have other uses if more plants were available.In vitro propagation by enhanced axillary sprouting from stem segments was attained using Murashige and Skoog Basal Medium(MS)as well as basal medium supplemented with cytokinins 6-Benzylaminopurine(BA)or 6-(γ,γ-Dimethylallylamino)purine(2iP).The best treatment for shoot induction in semisolid medium consisted in MS supplemented with 2 mg l^(–1) BA,obtaining a mean of 3.7 shoots per explant.Other interesting responses were observed,such as nodular callus induction using combinations of BA and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D);root induction without Plant Growth Regulators(PGR);and generation of shoot clusters.These clusters constituted an excellent explant for micropropagation in temporary immersion bioreactors,obtaining a propagation rate of 43 shoots per explant with 1 min immersion and 6 h immersion frequencies.All new plants rooted and survived the transfer to soil.This study developed an in vitro propagation scheme to produce individuals that can be used either for reforestation,economical purposes,or to carry out studies in this species to assess its full potential,avoiding exploitation from wild plants.

Effectiveness of statins vs.exercise on reducing postprandial hypertriglyceridemia in dyslipidemic population:A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Background:Individuals at risk of suffering cardiovascular disease(CVD) present with larger increases in blood trigyceride(TG) concentration after a high-fat meal than do healthy individuals.These postprandial hypertriglyceride levels are an independent risk factor for CVD.Prescription of statins and a bout of prolonged exercise are both effective in lowering postprandial hypertriglyceride levels.We aimed to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of statins vs.a bout of aerobic exercise in reducing fasting and postprandial TG(PPTG) concentrations in indiv、duals at high nsk of developing CVD.Methods:Thirty-seven sltudies from a systematic literature search of the PubMed,EMBASE,and Cochrane databases were included in this review.The selected studies conducted trials involving statin therapy(n=20) or a bout of aerobic exercise(n=19) and measured their impact on PPTG levels as the outcome.Two studies analyzed both treatments and were included in duplicate.The meta-analysis was constructed using a random-effects model to calculate the mean difference(MD).The Student t test was used to compare the data sets for statins vs.exercise.Results:Overall,statin and exercise interventions showed similar reductions in PPTG levels,with an MD of-0.65 mmol/L for statins(95% confidence interval(95%CI):-0.54 to-0.77;p ch to the treatment and prevention of CVD.More studies are required to determine the underlying mechanisms and the possible additive effects of these interventions.

Polyoxidovanadates a new therapeutic alternative for neurodegenerative and aging diseases

Aging is a natural phenomenon characterized by a progressive decline in physiological integrity,leading to a deterioration of cognitive function and increasing the risk of suffering from chronic-degenerative diseases,including cardiovascular diseases,osteoporosis,cancer,diabetes,and neurodegeneration.Aging is considered the major risk factor for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease develops.Likewise,diabetes and insulin resistance constitute additional risk factors for developing neurodegenerative disorders.Currently,no treatment can effectively reverse these neurodegenerative pathologies.However,some antidiabetic drugs have opened the possibility of being used against neurodegenerative processes.In the previous framework,Vanadium species have demonstrated a notable antidiabetic effect.Our research group evaluated polyoxidovanadates such as decavanadate and metforminium-decavanadate with preventive and corrective activity on neurodegeneration in brain-specific areas from rats with metabolic syndrome.The results suggest that these polyoxidovanadates induce neuronal and cognitive restoration mechanisms.This review aims to describe the therapeutic potential of polyoxidovanadates as insulin-enhancer agents in the brain,constituting a therapeutic alternative for aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Phage-inducible chromosomal islands(PICIs)are a widespread family of mobile genetic elements,which have an important role in bacterial pathogenesis.These elements mobilize among bacterial species at extremely high frequencies,representing an attractive tool for the delivery of synthetic genes.However,tools for their genetic manipulation are limited and timing consuming.Here,we have adapted a synthetic biology approach for rapidly editing of PICIs in Saccharomyces cerevisiae based on their ability to excise and integrate into the bacterial chromosome of their cognate host species.As proof of concept,we engineered several PICIs from Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and validated this methodology for the study of the biology of these elements by generating multiple and simultaneous mutations in different PICI genes.For biotechnological purposes,we also synthetically constructed PICIs as Trojan horses to deliver different CRISPR-Cas9 systems designed to either cure plasmids or eliminate cells carrying the targeted genes.Our results demonstrate that the strategy developed here can be employed universally to study PICIs and enable new approaches for diagnosis and treatment of bacterial diseases.

＜正＞The main objective of this paper was to develop a methodology to evaluate the impact of turning over the Federal Irrigation Districts to the Water Users Associations （ADA）. The evaluation was carried out through the following indicators: marginal productivity of irrigation water including effective precipitation, conveyance efficiencies and water application, growth rates of the components of the value of production, and the overall benefit of the users. In this research, the management of the Irrigation District 011 "Alto Rio Lerma" and the 11 modules （Irrigated areas operated by the AUA） that conform it are taken as a case study. The district was transferred to the users’ associations in 1992. The results indicate that the process of transference of the Irrigation District 011 "Alto Rio Lerma," has been beneficial for water users. Nevertheless, some errors in the planning process have not been corrected, on the contrary, these have aggravated. Among them, worth mentioning is the tendency to use a higher volume of water than the average volume of reservoir intake, which reduces the productivity of the used water and diminishes the water regulating capacity of dams. On the other hand, an increase in the efficiency of water use and its productivity has been observed alongwith an improvement in the yields of crops, which could be considered, to a large extent, a result of better water management and maintenance jobs by the WUA. Unfortunately, the producers’ net incomes have fallen, mainly due to increase of production costs and a drop in prices of crops, although, this last negative condition is due more to the liberalization of markets.

Potential causes for the clinical and pathological variability observed in Alzheimer’s disease(AD):AD is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the impairment of cognitive functions such as memory,learning,and reasoning.These commonly described clinical symptoms are due to particular pathological changes in the brain,including inflammation,synaptic loss,and neuronal death.These changes are a consequence of the accumulation of abnormally folded amyloid-β(Aβ)and tau proteins in specific areas of the central nervous system.Considering the progressive aging of the world’s population,the number of people affected by AD is expected to substantially and consistently increase in the coming years.This positions AD as one of the main public health challenges in the near future.

Neurodegeneration affects a large number of cell types including neurons,astrocytes or oligodendrocytes,and neural stem cells.Neural stem cells can generate new neuronal populations through proliferation,migration,and differentiation.This neurogenic potential may be a relevant factor to fight neurodegeneration and aging.In the last years,we can find growing evidence suggesting that melatonin may be a potential modulator of adult hippocampal neurogenesis.The lack of therapeutic strategies targeting neurogenesis led researchers to explore new molecules.Numerous preclinical studies with melatonin observed how melatonin can modulate and enhance molecular and signaling pathways involved in neurogenesis.We made a special focus on the connection between these modulation mechanisms and their implication in neurodegeneration,to summarize the current knowledge and highlight the therapeutic potential of melatonin.

Thrombotic microangiopathy(TMA)is potentially life-threatening condition caused by small-vessel microthrombi and is associated with schistocyte formation,low platelets and end-organ damage that may not be reversible.[1,2]As a life-threatening condition,TMA recognition in hospitalized patients after organ transplantation is key to improving survival.Transplant-associated TMA(TATMA)can occur after both solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and often mimics other disease processes such as thrombotic throm-bocytopenic purpura(TTP)with similar constellation of symptoms during presentation.We present a rare case of a patient with TATMA after orthotopic heart transplantation.

Compelling evidence demonstrates that the levels of peripheral amyloid-β(Aβ)fluctuate in Alzheimer’s disease(AD)patients.Moreover,Aβdeposits have been identified in peripheral tissues.However,the relevance of peripheral Aβ(misfolded or not)in pathological situations,and the temporal appearance of these pathological fluctuations,are not well understood.The presence of misfolded Aβin peripheral compartments raises concerns on potential inter-individual transmissions considering the well-reported prion-like properties of this disease-associated protein.The latter is supported by multiple reports demonstrating that Aβmisfolding can be transmitted between humans and experimental animals through multiple routes of exposure.In this mini-review,we discuss the potential implications of peripheral,disease-associated Aβin disease mechanisms,as well as in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
