The definition of a molecular surface which is physically sound and computationally efficient is a very interesting and long standing problem in the implicit solvent continuum modeling of biomolecular systems as well as in the molecular graphics *** this work,two molecular surfaces are evaluated with respect to their suitability for electrostatic computation as alternatives to the widely used Connolly-Richards surface:the blobby surface,an implicit Gaussian atom centered surface,and the skin *** figures of merit,we considered surface differentiability and surface area continuity with respect to atom positions,and the agreement with explicit solvent *** analysis seems to privilege the skin to the blobby surface,and points to an unexpected relationship between the non connectedness of the surface,caused by interstices in the solute volume,and the surface area dependence on atomic *** order to assess the ability to reproduce explicit solvent results,specific software tools have been developed to enable the use of the skin surface in PoissonBoltzmann calculations with the DelPhi *** results indicate that the skin and Connolly surfaces have a comparable performance from this last point of view.

An efficient multigrid finite-differences scheme for solving elliptic Fredholm partial integro-differential equations (PIDE) is discussed. This scheme combines a second-order accurate finite difference discretization of the PIDE problem with a multigrid scheme that includes a fast multilevel integration of the Fredholm operator allowing the fast solution of the PIDE problem. Theoretical estimates of second-order accuracy and results of local Fourier analysis of convergence of the proposed multigrid scheme are presented. Results of numerical experiments validate these estimates and demonstrate optimal computational complexity of the proposed framework.

AIM To establish a threshold value for liver fat content between healthy children and those with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) by using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), with liver biopsy serving as a reference standard. METHODS The study was approved by the local ethics committee, and written informed consent was obtained from all participants and their legal guardians before the study began. Twenty-seven children with NAFLD underwent liver biopsy to assess the presence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The assessment of liver fat fraction was performed using MRI, with a high field magnet and 2D gradient-echo and multiple-echo T1-weighted sequence with low flip angle and single-voxel pointresolved 1H MR-Spectroscopy(1H-MRS), corrected for T1 and T2* decays. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the best cutoff value. Lin coefficient test was used to evaluate thecorrelation between histology, MRS and MRI-PDFF. A Mann-Whitney U-test and multivariate analysis were performed to analyze the continuous variables. RESULTS According to MRS, the threshold value between healthy children and those with NAFLD is 6%; using MRI-PDFF, a cut-off value of 3.5% is suggested. The Lin analysis revealed a good fit between the histology and MRS as well as *** MRS is an accurate and precise method for detecting NAFLD in children.

Neglected features of lifestyle: Their relevance in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

AIM To investigated in non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease(NAFLD), with ultrasound(US)-detected fatty liver, and in a group of non-alcoholic and otherwise healthy subjects, relationship of neglected features of lifestyle with NAFLD and obesity. METHODS Five hundred and thirty-two NAFLD and 667 non-NAFLD healthy subjects, age 21-60 years were studied. Severity of liver steatosis was assessed by US bright liver score. The adherence to mediterranean diet score(AMDS) was assessed on the basis of a 1-wk recall computerized questionnaire which included a detailed physical activity reports(Baecke questionnaire). The western dietary profile score, as a simplified paradigm of unhealthy diet, a questionnaire quantifying sun exposure score and a sleep habits questionnaires provided a further comprehensive lifestyle *** Body mass index(BMI), insulin resistance(HOMA), and triglycerides, poorer adherence to a mediterranean diet profile, sedentary habits, minor sun exposure and use of "western diet" foods are greater in NAFLD. Multiplelinear regression analysis, weighted by years of age, displays BMI, HOMA and AMDS as the most powerful independent predictors of fatty liver severity; however, also the physical activity score, the western diet habit and the sun exposure score are acting inside the model with significant independent *** Articulated clinical intervention, according to our results, are justified in NAFLD and can be pursued addressing by focused intervention nutritional profile, physical exercise mainly in open-air subsets for enhancing sun exposure and healthier sleep duration and rhythm.

A framework for the optimal sparse-control of the probability density function of a jump-diffusion process is presented. This framework is based on the partial integro-differential Fokker-Planck (FP) equation that governs the time evolution of the probability density function of this process. In the stochastic process and, correspondingly, in the FP model the control function enters as a time-dependent coefficient. The objectives of the control are to minimize a discrete-in-time, resp. continuous-in-time, tracking functionals and its L2- and L1-costs, where the latter is considered to promote control sparsity. An efficient proximal scheme for solving these optimal control problems is considered. Results of numerical experiments are presented to validate the theoretical results and the computational effectiveness of the proposed control framework.

In the framework of stochastic processes, the connection between the dynamic programming scheme given by the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and a recently proposed control approach based on the Fokker-Planck equation is discussed. Under appropriate assumptions it is shown that the two strategies are equivalent in the case of expected cost functionals, while the Fokker-Planck formalism allows considering a larger classof objectives. To illustratethe connection between the two control strategies, the cases of an Itō stochastic process and of a piecewise-deterministic process are considered.

A Tailor-made Data Quality Approach for Higher Educational Data

Purpose: This paper relates the definition of data quality procedures for knowledge organizations such as Higher Education Institutions. The main purpose is to present the flexible approach developed for monitoring the data quality of the European Tertiary Education Register(ETER) database, illustrating its functioning and highlighting the main challenges that still have to be faced in this ***/methodology/approach: The proposed data quality methodology is based on two kinds of checks, one to assess the consistency of cross-sectional data and the other to evaluate the stability of multiannual data. This methodology has an operational and empirical orientation. This means that the proposed checks do not assume any theoretical distribution for the determination of the threshold parameters that identify potential outliers, inconsistencies, and errors in the data. Findings: We show that the proposed cross-sectional checks and multiannual checks are helpful to identify outliers, extreme observations and to detect ontological inconsistencies not described in the available meta-data. For this reason, they may be a useful complement to integrate the processing of the available *** limitations: The coverage of the study is limited to European Higher Education Institutions. Vampiristic behaviors are rarely seen clinically and less than 100 cases have been reported in the world literature to date. A distinction is usually made as to whether the patient drinks their own blood or the blood of others. We describe a 38-year-old patient who had vampiristic thoughts and fantasies that began in adolescence, but did not act on these thoughts until after she suffered a traumatic brain injury with a three-week loss of consciousness while serving in the military. Brain imaging showed focal damage to her bilateral frontal lobes. Psychological testing demonstrated impairment of executive function. We review the proposed diagnostic criteria for vampirism and discuss how behavioral disinhibition may have affected the emergence into behavior of her previously inhibited vampiristic thoughts.

咽鼓管功能障碍是常见疾病，经内镜鼻球囊导管扩张咽鼓管是一种新的手术技术，本研究的目的是回顾性分析这种新技术的演化并报道其适应症、初步结果和并发症。2009年1月～2011年1月期间，一家三级医疗中心的70例（100耳）主诉慢性耳胀满感、压迫感、疼痛及气压创伤性中耳炎的成人（18～73岁）患者，自幼均无咽鼓管功能不良的病史，行单侧或双侧咽鼓管球囊导管扩张术。手术在手术室全麻或在诊室用利多卡因凝胶行咽鼓管局麻下进行，将F-70的引导导管尖部经鼻置于咽鼓管咽口，将宽5mm、长16mm的鼻用球囊导管放置于咽鼓管的近端以扩张咽鼓管软骨部，扩张压力为6～8个大气压，扩张时间10～30秒。
