A common reclamation practice for closed coal surface mines is filling them with water to form pit *** creation and sustainability of these lakes are significantly affected by the stability of the corresponding *** present study provides a general framework for analyzing the water filling’s effect on slope stability based on a new water filling index,which can indirectly consider the factors affecting the process and efficiently quantify the filling speed’s *** assumptions of the proposed approach are thoroughly discussed,and the range of the water filling index is ***,the safety factor is calculated using the finite element method with the shear strength reduction technique during the filling process for various conditions(soil properties,slope geometry,hydraulic conditions,and water filling speed).Results are presented as normalized stability charts for practical *** the water filling,the stability gradually decreases until the reservoir reaches a critical level of 10%e40%of the total height;it then increases to even more stable conditions than the initial ***,the present analysis allows for the preliminary stability evaluation of a coal mine during the formation of a pit lake and the appropriate quantification of the water filling’s effect.

Parametric optimisation of two Pelton turbine runner designs using CFD

This paper aims to develop a generic optimisation method for Pelton turbine runners using computational fluid dynamics （CFD）. Two different initial runners are optimised to achieve more generic results. A simple bucket geometry based on existing bibliography is parameterised and initially optimised using fast Lagrangian solver （FLs）. It is then further optimised with a more accurate method using ANsYs Fluent. The second geometry is a current commercial geometry with good initial performance and is optimised using ANsYs CFX. The analytical results provided by CFX and Fluent simulations are used to analyse the characteristics of the flow for different runner geometries.

Gene capture by transposable elements leads to epigenetic conflict in maize

Truthfully coordinating participation routes in informative participatory sensing

Participatory sensing is a promising approach with which people contribute sensory information to form a body of knowledge. In practice, people may have different ways to engage in a participatory sensing campaign. For example, there are several possible routes from a participant’s home to her office, where a route can be seen as a set of space-temporal coordinates, and measurements can be taken at these coordinates. To coordinate participation routes to collect more valuable information with a limited number of participants,a further concept, informative participatory sensing(IPs) has been developed recently. However, existing IPs systems lack incentive mechanisms to fight against the strategic behaviours of self-interested ***, we propose a formal model of IPs where a service provider can coordinate individual schedules of self-interested participants. As the problem of informative path coordination is NP-hard, the well-known mechanism, Vickrey-Clarke-Groves(VCG) will be computationally inefficient to solve our problem. Given this, we design a sequentially sorting mechanism(ssM) for the model to allocate the schedules and determine the bonuses for these participants, and we then theoretically prove that ssM is computationally efficient,individually rational, profitable and truthful. Furthermore, we empirically evaluate our route allocation method in simulations and show that it significantly outperforms several benchmark approaches.

Design of a modern automatic control system for the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment

The Activated sludge Process(AsP) exhibits highly nonlinear properties. The design of an automatic control system that is robust against disturbance of inlet wastewater flow rate and has short process settling times is a challenging matter. The proposed control method is an I-P modi fied controller automatic control system with state variable feedback and control canonical form simulation diagram for the process. A more stable response is achieved with this type of modern control. settling times of 0.48 days are achieved for the concentration of microorganisms,(reference value step increase of 50 mg·L-1) and 0.01 days for the concentration of oxygen(reference value step increase of 0.1 mg·L-1). Fluctuations of concentrations of oxygen and microorganisms after an inlet disturbance of5 × 103m3·d-1are small. Changes in the reference values of oxygen and microorganisms(increases by 10%, 20% and 30%) show satisfactory response of the system in all cases. Changes in the value of inlet wastewater flow rate disturbance(increases by 10%, 25%, 50% and 100%) are stabilized by the control system in short time. Maximum percent overshoot is also taken in consideration in all cases and the largest value is 25% which is acceptable. The proposed method with I-P controller is better for disturbance rejection and process settling times compared to the same method using PI controller. This method can substitute optimal control systems in AsP.

The present study deals with the determination of Mount Olympus summit(Mytikas),exploiting modern observations such as Global Navigation satellite systems(GNss)and existing geodetic *** last official Olympus height determination goes back 102 years by the swiss surveyor *** then,only unofficial measurement campaigns have taken *** is a variety of released heights,which range from 2917 to 2919 *** september and October of 2022,we conducted a GNss campaign,focusing on the area of highest Olympus *** precise GNss measurements(accuracy of 1-3 cm),in conjunction with height information from Greece’s National Triangulation Network(5-10 cm accuracy)and an appropriate,recent geoid model(5-6 cm accuracy),we estimate through the so-called GNss-levelling,the height of Olympus to 2917.727 m with respect to Greece’s officially accepted mean sea level and 2918.390 m with respect to the global vertical *** estimation of Olympus highest peak shows remarkable consistency at the level of 12.8 cm to that of *** in 1921.

Double versus single homologous intrauterine insemination for male factor infertility： a systematic review and meta-analysis

Male factor infertility affects 30%-50% of infertile couples worldwide, and there is an increasing interest in the optimal management of these patients. In studies comparing double and single intrauterine insemination （IUI）, a trend towards higher pregnancy rates in couples with male factor infertility was observed. Therefore, we set out to perform a meta-analysis to examine the superiority of double versus single IUI with the male partner＇s sperm in couples with male factor infertility. An odds ratio （OR） of 95% confidence intervals （CIs） was calculated for the pregnancy rate. Outcomes were analysed by using the ManteI-Haesel or Dersimonian-Laird model accordingto the heterogeneity of the results. Overall, five trials involving 1125 IUI cycles were included in the meta-analysis. There was a two-fold increase in pregnancies after a cycle with a double IUI compared with a cycle with a single IUI （OR. 2.0; 95% CI. 1.07-3.75; P〈O.03）. Nevertheless, this result was mainly attributed to the presence of a large trial that weighted as almost 50% in the overall analysis. sensitivity analysis, excluding this large trial, revealed only a trend towards higher pregnancy rates among double IUI cycles （OR. 1.58; 95% CI. 0.59-4.21）, but without statistical significance （P=0.20）. Our systematic review highlights that the available evidence regarding the use of double IUI in couples with male factor infertility is fragmentary and weak. Although there may be a trend towards higher pregnancy rates when the number of IUIs per cycle is increased, further large and well-designed randomized trials are needed to provide solid evidence toide current clinical practice.

Inflammatory bowel diseases and spondyloarthropathies: From pathogenesis to treatment

spondyloarthropathies(spA) include many different forms of inflammatory arthritis and can affect the spine(axial spA) and/or peripheral joints(peripheral spA) with Ankylosing spondylitis(As) being the prototype of the former. Extraarticular manifestations, like uveitis, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) are frequently observed in the setting of spA and are, in fact, part of the spA classification criteria. Bowel involvement seems to be the most common of these manifestations. Clinically evident IBD is observed in 6%-14% of As patients, which is significantly more frequent compared to the general population. Besides, it seems that silent microscopic gut inflammation, is evident in around 60% in As patients. Interestingly, occurrence of IBD has been associated with As disease activity. For peripheral spA, two different forms have been proposed with diverse characteristics. Of note, spA(axial or peripheral) is more commonly observed in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis. The common pathogenetic mechanisms that explain the link between IBD and spA are still ill-defined. The role of dysregulated microbiome along with migration of T lymphocytes and other cells from gut to the joint("gut-joint" axis) has been recognized, in the context of a genetic background including associations with alleles inside or outside the human leukocyte antigen system. Various therapeutic modalities are available with monoclonal antibodies against tumour necrosis factor, interleukin-23 and interleukin-17, being the most effective. Both gastroenterologists and rheumatologists should be alert to identify the coexistence of these conditions and ideally follow-up these patients in combined clinics.
