Fatty liver has been present in the lives of patients and physicians for almost two centuries.Vast knowledge has been generated regarding its etiology and consequences,although a long path seeking novel and innovative diagnostic biomarkers for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD)and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(nASH)is still envisioned.On the one hand,proteomics and lipidomics have emerged as potential noninvasive resources for nAFLD diagnosis.In contrast,metabolomics has been able to distinguish between nAFLD and nASH,even detecting degrees of fibrosis.On the other hand,genetic and epigenetic markers have been useful in monitoring disease progression,eventually functioning as target therapies.Other markers involved in immune dysregulation,oxidative stress,and inflammation are involved in the instauration and evolution of the disease.Finally,the fascinating gut microbiome is significantly involved in nAFLD and nASH.This review presents state-of-the-art biomarkers related to nAFLD and nASH and new promises that could eventually be positioned as diagnostic resources for this disease.As is evident,despite great advances in studying these biomarkers,there is still a long path before they translate into clinical benefits.

On the Misunderstanding of the Ziegler-nichols's Formulae Usage

In the Ziegler-nichols' s method of reaction curve,the proportional gain should be calculated as an inverse relation of the plant steady-state gain. One of the reasons behind this is to avoid an excessively high loop gain, which can jeopardize many required characteristics of the closed loop. However, many reports, scientific papers and books have been neglecting such gain compensation in the tuning formulae.This brief presents a comprehensive discussion about such uncompensated tuning rules. The main paper finding is that either the stability margin or the disturbance rejection is reduced in this case. A theoretical analysis is performed to obtain the main result. Moreover, a consistent simulation study is also performed to show the impact of the lack of compensation on performance.

Urban forests play an important role in the thermal comfort and overall life of local populations in large-and medium-sized cities.This study analyzes urban forest loss and maps land use and land cover(LULC)changes between 1991 and 2018 by evaluating the use of urban planning instruments for the mitigation of urban forest loss in Jo?o Pessoa,Brazil.For this purpose,satellite-derived LULC images from 1991,2006,2010 and 2018 and data on urban forest loss areas obtained using the Google Earth Engine were used.In addition,this paper also discusses the instruments used for integrated urban planning,which are(a)the legal sector,responsibility and nature;(b)the urban expansion process;and(c)the elements of urban infrastructure.The results show a clear shift in land use in the study area.The major changes in LULC classes occurred in urban areas and herbaceous vegetation,while the greatest loss was in arboreal/shrub vegetation.Thus,an increase in the pressure to occupy zones intended for environmental preservation could be estimated.Our results showed similar accuracies with other studies and more spatial details.The characteristics of the patterns,traces,and hotspots of urban expansion and forest cover loss were explored.We highlighted the potential use of this proposed framework to be applied and validated in other parts of the world to help better understand and quantify various aspects of urban-related problems such as urban forest loss mapping using instruments for integrated urban planning and low-cost approaches.

Revisiting the role of pathological analysis in transarterial chemoembolization-treated hepatocellular carcinoma after transplantation

AIM: To define the histopathological features predictive of post-transplant hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) recurrence after transarterial chemoembolization, applicable for recipient risk stratification.METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the specimens of all suspicious nodules(total 275) from 101 consecutive liver transplant recipients which came to our Pathology Unit over a 6-year period. All nodules were sampled and analyzed, and follow-up data were collected. We finally considered 11 histological variables for each patient: total number of nodules, number of viable nodules, size of the major nodule, size of the major viable nodule, occurrence of microscopic vascular invasion, maximum Edmondson's grade, clear cell/sarcomatous changes, and the residual neoplastic volume. Survival data were computed by means of the Kaplan-Meier procedure and analyzed by means of the Cox proportional hazards model. The multivariate linear regression and a k-means cluster analysis were also used in order to compute the standardized histological score.RESULTS: The total number of nodules, the residual neoplastic volume(the total volume of all evaluated nodules minus the necrotic portion) and the microvascular invasion entered the Cox multivariate hazard model with HCC recurrence as dependent variable. The histological score was therefore computed and a cluster analysis sorted recipients into 3 risk groups, with 3.3%, 18.5% and 53.8% respectively of tumor recurrence rates and 1.6%, 11.1% and 38.5% of tumor-related mortality respectively at the end of follow-up.COnCLUSIOn: The histological score allows a reliable stratification of HCC recurrence risk, especially in those recipients found out to be beyond the Milan criteria after orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).

The Brunel Mood Scale Rating in Mental Health for Physically Active and Apparently Healthy Populations

There is a positive relationship between mood states and mental health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the construct validity and internal consistency of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) for use with different populations, which are physically active and apparently healthy. Measures were obtained from 1295 male (n = 709, 34 ± 20 years, mean ± SD) and female (n = 576, 43 ± 24 years, mean ± SD) volunteers. Factor analysis was used, verifying that six factors (components) accounted for 62.65% of the total variance of the scale. The Varimax method with Kaiser normalization for the rotation of the factors for the main components, and it was observed that the 24 scale items loaded on six mood factors (anger, depression, tension, vigor, fatigue, and confusion). Internal consistency was good for all the factors identified. We suggest that the results provide some support for validity of the BRUMS for use with different populations, which are physically active and apparently healthy.
