Background: Oxidative stress and inflammation are related to the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM), being involved in the development of micro-and macrovascular complications. Physical activity is beneficial for DM patients, but little is known about the relationship between redox and inflammation biomarkers and the level of physical activity in these patients. Based on this, this research aims to evaluate the effects of physical activity level on redox stress parameters and inflammatory markers in T2DM patients. Methods: Eighty-four patients with T2DM were divided according to their physical activity level: group A (n = 48), sedentary;group B (n = 11) active (3 times a week, 150 min) and group C (n = 25), highly active (5 times a week, 150 - 300 mins, at least). Anthropometric and biochemical parameters, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, as well as GSH, sRAGE and ICAM-1 levels were assessed. Results: Glycated haemoglobin, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol levels were lower in the highly active group in comparison to other groups. Plasma SOD activity was higher in group C compared to Group A, while ICAM-1 levels were significantly higher in group B when compared to other groups. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the practice of physical activity is beneficial to T2DM patients, especially at high volume and frequency.

Neuromuscular junction is the main target for snakebites, which venoms act depending on the snake genus for paralyzing the prey (neurotoxicity) or for facilitating the digestion processes of the victim (myotoxicity), and also as a defense mechanism against predators. In the present study, a mouse neuromuscular apparatus was used for testing the hexane fraction of Casearia gossypiosperma plant, that showed the better antiophidian ability than dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions, against the irreversible paralysis induced by two, Bothrops jararacussu (Bjssu, 40 μg/mL) and Crotalus durissus terrificus (Cdt, 10 μg/mL) snake venoms. All fractions were obtained by liquid-liquid partition from the C. gossypiosperma hydroalcoholic lyophilized extract. The preliminary chromatographic profile of this plant showed phenols and flavonols as active constituents, whereas hexane fraction expressed mainly ?-sitosterol and quercetin. In spite of hexane fraction protection (? 95% and 48% against Bjssu and Cdt, respectively), isolately, only quercetin protected against the blockade-induced by Bjssu venom (65.5%). This study showed that hexane fraction acts against these snake venoms by a synergistic phytocomplex mechanism.

Three-dimensional collagen matrices of porcine origin are being used as substitutes for soft tissue grafts in periodontal plastic surgery in search of aesthetic and natural results. This in vitro study aimed to compare Fibro-Gide® (GeistlichBiomaterials) and Mucoderm® (BotissBiomaterials) matrices during the initial phase of soft tissue formation. For this purpose, samples of 5 × 5 mm were obtained, and then human fibroblasts were plated on them. After 24, 48 and 72 h, cell viability was assessed using an MTT assay, and the secretion of type I collagen, MMP-2, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 was analyzed by ELISA immunoassay. The control group (C) consisted of cells plated on polystyrene without the matrices. The morphology of the surfaces was also examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as was the average roughness (Ra) of the samples by a profilometer. Topographic analysis revealed that roughness was significantly higher on Mucoderm® than on Fibro-Gide® (p 0.05). The synthesis of type I collagen, MMP-2 and TIMP-1 were significantly higher from cells plated on Fibro-Gide® than on Mucoderm®, in all time points (p ® than on Mucoderm® (p ® induced an increase in type I collagen, MMP-2 and TIMP-1 and TIMP-2.
