The impact of heterogeneity and pore network characteristics on single and multi-phase fluid propagation in complex porous media:An X-ray computed tomography study

This study investigates the impact of pore network characteristics on fluid flow through complex and heterogeneous porous media, providing insights into the factors affecting fluid propagation in such systems. Specifically, high-resolution or micro X-ray computed tomography(CT) imaging techniques were utilized to examine outcrop stromatolite samples of the Lagoa Salgada, considered flow analogous to the Brazilian Pre-salt carbonate reservoirs. The petrophysical results comprised two distinct stromatolite depositional facies, the columnar and the fine-grained facies. By generating pore network model(PNM), the study quantified the relationship between key features of the porous system, including pore and throat radius, throat length, coordination number, shape factor, and pore volume. The study found that the less dense pore network of the columnar sample is typically characterized by larger pores and wider and longer throats but with a weaker connection of throats to pores. Both facies exhibited less variability in the radius of the pores and throats in comparison to throat length. Additionally, a series of core flooding experiments coupled with medical CT scanning was designed and conducted in the plug samples to assess flow propagation and saturation fields. The study revealed that the heterogeneity and presence of disconnected or dead-end pores significantly impacted the flow patterns and ***-phase flow patterns and oil saturation distribution reveal a preferential and heterogeneous displacement that mainly swept displaced fluid in some regions of plugs and bypassed it in others. The relation between saturation profiles, porosity profiles, and the number of fluid flow patterns for the samples was evident. Only for the columnar plug sample was the enhancement in recovery factor after shifting to lower salinity water injection(SB) observed.

Invasive rats strengthen predation pressure on bird eggs in a South Pacific island rainforest

Invasive rats ( spp.) are known to have pervasive impacts on island birds, particularly on their nesting success. To conserve or restore bird populations, numerous invasive rat control or eradication projects are undertaken on islands worldwide. However, such projects represent a huge investment and the decision-making process requires proper assessment of rat impacts. Here, we assessed the influence of two sympatric invasive rats ( and ) on native bird eggs in a New Caledonian rainforest, using artificial bird-nest monitoring. A total of 178 artificial nests containing two eggs of three different sizes were placed either on the ground or 1.5 m high and monitored at the start of the birds' breeding season. Overall, 12.4% of the nests were depredated during the first 7 days. At site 1, where nests were monitored during 16 days, 41.8% of the nests were depredated. The main predator was the native crow , responsible for 62.9% of the overall predation events. Rats were responsible for only 22.9% of the events, and ate only small and medium eggs at both heights. Our experiment suggests that in New Caledonia, predation pressure by rats strengthens overall bird-nest predation, adding to that by native predators. Experimental rat control operations may allow reduced predation pressure on nests as well as the recording of biodiversity responses after rat population reduction.

Amoxicillin/clavulanate is a synthetic penicillin that is currently commonly used,especially for the treatment of respiratory and cutaneous *** general,it is a well-tolerated oral ***,amoxicillin/clavulanate can cause adverse effects,mainly cutaneous,gastrointestinal,hepatic and hematologic,in some *** here is a case report of a 63-yearold male patient who developed cholestatic hepatitis after recent use of amoxicillin/*** 6 wk of prolonged use of the drug,he began to show signs of cholestatic icterus and developed severe hyperbilirubinemia(total bilirubin>300 mg/L).Diagnostic investigation was conducted by ultrasonography of the upper abdomen,serum tests for infection history,laboratory screening of autoimmune diseases,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)of the abdomen with bile duct-NMR and transcutaneous liver biopsy guided by *** duration of disease was approximately 4 mo,with complete resolution of symptoms and laboratory changes at the end of that time *** treatment was not instituted,only a combination of anti-emetic(metoclopramide)and cholestyramine for pruritus.
