Various conditions affecting nerve cells and the nervous system due to the loss of neurons and their connecting networks are described under the superordinate phrase“Neurodegenerative diseases”.Such diseases lead to disability due to gradual neuronal death in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous *** many of these diseases have unknown causes,sometimes these are due to medical conditions such as alcoholism,a tumor,or a stroke,or other causes which may include genetic mutations,toxins,chemicals,and viruses.

AIM:To investigate the potential role of p53 codon 72 polymorphism as a risk factor for development of anal cancer. METHODS:Thirty-two patients with invasive anal carcinoma and 103 healthy blood donors were included in the study.p53 codon 72 polymorphism was analyzed in blood samples through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing. RESULTS:The relative frequency of each allele was 0.60 for Arg and 0.40 for Pro in patients with anal cancer, and 0.61 for Arg and 0.39 for Pro in normal controls. No significant differences in distribution of the codon 72 genotypes between patients and controls were found. CONCLUSION:These results do not support a role for the p53 codon 72 polymorphism in anal carcinogenesis.

Spouted beds (SBs) have a long history of successful applications for preparation of solid dosage forms of pharmaceuticals. The well-known versatility of SBs, provided by different design and operational factors, and their efficient mixing of solids allow for engineering of technological characteristics of pharmaceutical solid forms. Particle properties like morphology, size, porosity, flowability, and dissolution rate can be improved by managing geometric and operational conditions for spouting. Drying is probably the most disseminated operation for pharmaceutical processing in SBs, and many studies have investigated drying of medicinal plant extracts such as achiote (Bixa orellana sp.), guarana (Paullinia cupana sp.), passion flower (Passiflora alata D.), and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) with excellent pharmacotechnical and stability results. Another important application is coating of tablets and gelatin capsules, and previous studies have shown that SBs and spout–fluid beds may be advantageous over traditional pan coating, especially for polymeric film coating. Recently, an alternative process for improving drug bioavailability has involved preparation of β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes in SBs. The first study to propose SBs for this pharmaceutical application explored the advantage of obtaining solid forms of inclusion complexes in just one step, and obtained expressive increases in drug solubility. The technique has been applied in subsequent studies on inclusion complexes of the medication carvedilol and uxi (Endopleura uchi L.) extracts.

The complementarity of energy resources used in hybrid power generation can result in optimization of power capacity and reservation capabilities. This article is dedicated to the study of hybrid hydro PV systems. The goal is to establish the relationship between system performance and complementarity of energy resources. The study was carried out with computer simulations based on a method that uses ideal functions developed to describe the energy resources and determines a limit of performance. The results confirm expectations that performance, as measured by the total time of failure to meet demand, will be better as energy resources are complementary. Charts relating energy complementarity with failures are presented. The subsequent research work shall proceed to at least two different phases. In the first one, the method exposed in the present work shall be applied to real data and compared to the operation of existing hybrid plants. In the second phase, results shall be confronted with design parameters of hydro PV plants based on complementary resources. A next stage would be the enlargement of the method applied in this work for systems based on other energy resources, such as wind energy and ocean wave energy.

Microcalorimetric Study of Acetylcholine and Acetylthiocholine Hydrolysis by Acetylcholinesterase

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is an important enzyme responsible for the cleavage of acetylcholine. Studies of the activity of this enzyme use an artificial substrate, acetylthiocholine, because a product of its catalysis, thiocholine, readily generates a light absorbing product upon reaction with Elman’s reagent 5,5’-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid (DTNB). The hydrolysis of acetylcholine cannot be assayed with this method. The isothermal titration calorimetry can assay the hydrolysis of both substrates, without requiring additional reagents other than the enzyme and the substrate. To compare kinetic values obtained in the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) and acetylthiocholine (ATCh), with carbaryl acting as inhibitor, a calorimetric technique was used to evaluate kinetic properties of the two reactions. This method can show the hydrolysis of both substrates by the heat exchange that occurs during catalysis. In addition, it allowed the assessment of the AChE inhibition by carbaryl, a common insecticide. The results show a similarity between values obtained with both substrates, which are slightly higher for acetylcholine, the enzyme natural substrate. Enzymatic parameters values from ATCh and ACh were similar to each other and inhibitory constants using carbaryl were also similar, displaying that any approach to ACh is feasible using ATCh. The results obtained from ITC show the precision achieved by the calorimetric method.

This paper presents an analysis of 64 lightning‐induced voltage waveforms recorded in an experimental system implemented in the campus of the University of São paulo,*** voltages were measured on a 10 m high,2.7 km long un‐energized overhead line consisting of two conductors installed on 6 m *** of the conductors had surge arresters,while the other one was left *** speaking,all the recorded voltages on the unprotected conductor were bipolar,but in many cases only one semi‐cycle could be considered important for practical *** criteria are discussed for the determination of the waveshape parameters,which may differ signifi-cantly from those of the standard lightning impulse voltage(1.2/50μs).Based on the proposed criterion for classifying the induced voltages,unipolar waveforms accounted for 67%of the total and,except for one case,all of them had positive *** median values of the front time and time‐to‐half‐value were,respectively,5.2μs and 15.8μ*** waveforms were 33%of the total and in approximately 62%of the cases the first semi‐cycle was of positive *** 91%of the cases the voltage peak occurred either in the first or the second semi‐cycle.

The objective of this work is to model statistically the ultraviolet radiation index (UV Index) to make forecast (extrapolate) and analyze trends. The task is relevant, due to increased UV flux and high rate of cases non-melanoma skin cancer in northeast of Brazil. The methodology utilized an Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ADL) or Dynamic Linear Regression model. The monthly data of UV index were measured in east coast of the Brazilian Northeast (City of Natal-Rio Grande do Norte). The Total Ozone is single explanatory variable to model and was obtained from the TOMS and OMI/AURA instruments. The Predictive Mean Matching (PMM) method was used to complete the missing data of UV Index. The results mean squared error (MSE) between the observed UV index and interpolated data by model was of 0.36 and for extrapolation was of 0.30 with correlations of 0.90 and 0.91 respectively. The forecast/extrapolation performed by model for a climatological period (2012-2042) indicated a trend of increased UV (Seasonal Man-Kendall test scored τ = 0.955 and p-value 0.001) if the Total Ozone remain on this tendency to reduce. In those circumstances, the model indicated an increase of almost one unit of UV index to year 2042.

The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of Total Ozone and Aerosols about variability of Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) in the east coast of the Northeastern region of Brazil through measures from multispectral sensor GUV (Ground-based Ultraviolet Radiometer). The methodology consisted of descriptive study and cluster analyses using data of UV in channels UVB (305 nm) and UVA (320 nm, 340 nm and 380 nm) and data of UV index, Total Ozone, Aerosol, Global Solar Radiation, Cloudiness and Wind. The results for city of Natal indicated that an annual event occurs in September/October which stabilizes the UV or UV Index when Total Ozone levels reach their annual maximum. This event is influenced by marine Aerosol that is found on mainland at a higher concentration in September due to greater Wind intensity and their southeasterly direction (sea for land). The cluster analysis using the variables above allowed us to detect three different groups: the first group is formed by Natal, Recife and Jo?o Pessoa and so determined that this event occurs in these three cities;the second group is formed by Maceió, Aracaju and Salvador and the third group includes only Fortaleza and had different results.
