Revisiting taxonomy,morphological evolution,and fossil calibration strategies in Chloranthaceae

Chloranthaceae is one of the earliest diverging angiosperm families and is comprised of approximately 75 species in four genera (Chloranthus,Sarcandra,Ascarina,and Hedyosmum).This family has received considerable attention because of its seemingly primitive morphology,disjunct tropical distribution in Asia and America,and extensive fossil record from the Early *** the present study,we reconstructed the phylogeny of Chloran- thaceae based on a combined dataset of three plastid DNA regions and 56 *** then estimated divergence times in the family using two relaxed molecular clock methods (BEAST and penalized likelihood).We focused on testing the influence of fossil taxa in calibrating the molecular phylogeny,and on assessing the current taxonomy of the family in light of the phylogenetic *** results indicate that most intrageneric divisions within Asca-rina and Hedyosmum are not *** results from the dating analysis suggest that the Hedyosmum-like fossil Asteropollis represents a stem lineage of Hedyosmum,as has been suggested previously from morphological *** contrast,our results indicate that the Chloranthus-like fossil Chloranthistemon,previously suggested on morphological grounds to be a stem relative of Chloranthus,may,instead,belong to the branch leading to the clade Chloranthus + *** median crown ages of Chloranthus,Sarcandra,Ascarina,and Hedyosmum estimated in the BEAST analysis were 26.3,9.5,31.0 and 45.8 million years ago (Ma),respectively,whereas the divergence between Chloranthus and Sarcandra,the splitting of Ascarina with the former two genera,and Hedyos- mum separating from the three genera were estimated to 63.8,95.7 and 111.1 *** present study sheds further light on the temporal evolution of Chloranthaceae and exemplifies how molecular dating analyses may be used to explore alternative phylogenetic placements of fossil taxa.

Supersonic gas jets generated via a conical nozzle are widely applied in the laser wakefield acceleration of *** stability of the gas jet is critical to the electron injection and the reproducibility of the wakefield *** we discussed the role of the stilling chamber in a modified converging-diverging nozzle to dissipate the turbulence and to stabilize the gas *** the fluid dynamics simulations and the Mach-Zehnder interferometer measurements,the instability originating from the nonlinear turbulence is studied and the mechanism to suppress the instability is *** the numerical and experimental results prove that the carefully designed nozzle with a stilling chamber is able to reduce the perturbation by more than 10% compared with a simple-conical nozzle.

Human-induced growth of macro-algae is often assumed to increase trematode infections in fishes by increasing the abundance and condition of the parasite's intermediate host - snails - as this can boost the release of trematode larvae, cercariae, from the intermediate hosts. However, macro-algae can also impose barriers to the transmission of cercariae and reduce infections. We investigated whether an increased growth of filamentous algae affects the transmission of cercariae to the threespine stickleback , a common fish in eutrophied shallow waters. We exposed sticklebacks to trematode cercariae in the absence and presence of artificial filamentous algae, and recorded effects on the proportion of sticklebacks infected and the number of encysted metacercariae per fish. No significant effect of artificial algae on cercariae transmission was detected. However, the body size and the sex of the sticklebacks were strongly correlated with the number of encysted metacercariae per infected fish, with females and larger individuals being more infected. We discuss different factors that could have caused the difference in parasite transmission, including sex-related differences in body size and behaviour of sticklebacks.

In times of increasing global warming,enormous efforts are required to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas(GHG)*** to the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050 and the even more ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral in Germany by 2045,it is necessary to systematically increase energy efficiency and decarbonize the industrial heat *** methods of heat integration can be used to exploit existing potentials for waste heat utilization and to integrate renewable technologies for heating and *** using a non-stationary,multiperiod approach,additional energy savings can be achieved by integrating a thermal energy storage(TES)that enables heat transportation over *** paper presents a simultaneous approach for thermal energy storage integration into multiperiod heat integration *** approach can be used to minimize energy demand,costs and CO 2 emissions and is demonstrated in two case *** case study 1,it is shown that the presented approach is capable of integrating a TES properly into a simple multiperiod heat integration problem with two *** case study 2,a simplified example from a cosmetics manufactory is *** total utility demand can be reduced by up to 44.3%due to TES integration and the energetic optimal storage size can be determined as 125 m *** savings are strongly dependent on the constellation of heat flows between the periods,on the temperature levels and on the storage *** reductions of energy demand,costs and CO 2 emissions can be achieved with TES being properly integrated into a suitable operating environment.

Purpose: Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome accounts for over 95% of patients with TOS. We report a single institution experience with robotic first rib resection in patients with Neurogenic TOS. Methods: The diagnosis of NTOS was made in patients in whom all specific localizing and diagnostic orthopedic and neurologic conditions were ruled out. Preoperative diagnostic tests included a comprehensive history and physical exam, Chest X-ray, Chest CT, MRI if the cervical spine, Nerve conduction studies, and Magnetic Resonance angiography of the Thoracic outlet with arm maneuvers (MRA). Patients with NTOS who underwent robotic first rib resection with disarticulation of the costosternal joint and scalenectomy. Results: There were 137 patients (47 men and 90 women). Mean age was 34 ± 9.5 years. Operative time was 93 minutes ± 10.3 minutes. There were no intraoperative complications. There was no injury to the subclavian vessels during the dissection. There were no neurovascular complications. There was no 30 or 90 day mortality. Quick DASH Scores (Mean ± SEM) decreased from 60.3+/2.1 preoperatively to 5 ± 2.3 in the immediate postoperative period, and 3.5+/1.1 at 6 months. (P < 0.01) Immediate relief of symptoms was seen in all patients (100%). Complete relief of symptoms was seen in 133/137 (97%) of patients. Conclusions: Robotic resection of the medial aspect of the first rib with disarticulation of the costo-sternal joint is associated with excellent relief of neurologic symptoms in patients with Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Diaphragmatic Flap: Technique of Preparation and Indications for Use

Background: The use of a vascularized pedicle flap of diaphragmatic muscle (DF) for reconstructive procedures in the chest has many advantages. Yet, despite the excellent reported results, the use of DF has not been widespread. Some factors for the less widespread use of DF have been, concern about diaphragmatic function, hesitation to use such a vital muscle for reconstructive purposes, and most importantly, the technical aspects for the preparation of the flap. Methods: Using a cadaveric model, the vascular anatomy of the diaphragm and the steps for the preparation of the DF was defined and illustrated for both the right and left hemidiaphragm. Results: No perioperative mortality with the use of DF has been recorded. Function of the native diaphragm has not been impaired. Bronchopleural fistulas and pericardial defects have healed in all instances. Excellent repair has been achieved in all patients with esophageal lesions. The disruption of the repaired native diaphragm and visceral herniation has been reported but it has been attributed to the learning curve and the technique of repair. Conclusion: With a better understanding of the vascular anatomy of the diaphragm and a formal methodical approach to harvesting the DF, more surgeons will be encouraged to use DF with excellent results.
