MicroRNAs: New players in endometriosis

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory disorder that limits the quality of life of affected women. This pathology affects 10% of reproductive-age women, although the prevalence in those patients experiencing pain, infertility or both is as high as 35%-50%. Endometriosis is characterized by endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, primarily on the pelvic peritoneum, ovaries and the pouch of Douglas. Despite extensive research endeavours, a unifying theory regarding the exact etiopathogenic mechanism of this high prevalent and incapacitating condition is still lacking, although it has been suggested that epigenetics could be involved. Micro RNAs(mi RNAs), one of the epigenetic players, are small non-coding RNAs that can act as post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression, reducing the expression of their target m RNAs either inhibiting its translation or promoting its degradation. Mi RNA expression profiles are specific of tissue and cell type. Abnormal mi RNA expression has been described in different pathological conditions, such as a myriad of oncological, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases and gynecological pathologies. In endometriosis, mi RNA expression patterns of eutopic endometrium from patients and control women and from different endometriotic lesions have been described. These small non-coding molecules have become attractive candidates as novel biomarkers for an early non-invasive diagnosis of the disease, which could suppose a valuable benefit to the patients in terms of improvement of prognosis and reduction of the ratio of recurrence. In this systematic review we will focus on the role of mi RNAs in the pathophisiology of endometriosis.

Remote-Controlled Ambidextrous Robot Hand Concept

In the development of robotic limbs, the side of members is of importance to define the shape of artificial limbs and the range of movements. It is mainly significant for biomedical applications concerning patients suffering arms or legs injuries. In this paper, the concept of an ambidextrous design for robot hands is introduced. The fingers can curl in one way or another, to imitate either a right hand or a left hand. The advantages and inconveniences of different models have been investigated to optimise the range and the maximum force applied by fingers. Besides, a remote control interface is integrated to the system, allowing both to send commands through internet and to display a video streaming of the ambidextrous hand as feedback. Therefore, a robotic prosthesis could be used for the first time in telerehabilitation. The main application areas targeted are physiotherapy after strokes or management of phantom pains for amputees by learning to control the ambidextrous hand. A client application is also accessible on Facebook social network, making the robotic limb easily reachable for the patients. Additionally the ambidextrous hand can be used for robotics research as well as artistic performances.

本文介绍了Bárány协会国际前庭疾病分类(International Classification of Vestibular Disorders,ICVD)委员会和国际头痛协会偏头痛分类小组所提出的"儿童前庭性偏头痛"(vestibular migraine of childhood,VMC)、"很可能的儿童前庭性偏头痛"(probable VMC,pVMC)和"儿童复发性眩晕"(recurrent vertigo of childhood,RVC)的诊断标准。偏头痛在儿童期不同复发性眩晕亚型中起着重要作用。在此分类文件中,VMC、p VMC和RVC这3种与偏头痛相关的一组谱系疾病分类,上述诊断标准中的偏头痛成分为确定、很可能及可能不存在。VMC的诊断标准:(A)至少5次中度或重度前庭症状发作,持续时间5分钟~72小时;(B)当前或既往有伴或不伴先兆的偏头痛病史;(C)至少50%的发作与至少1种偏头痛样症状相关。pVMC的诊断标准:至少3次中度或重度前庭症状发作,持续时间5分钟~72小时,符合VMC诊断标准B或C中的1项。RVC的诊断标准:至少3次中度或重度前庭症状发作,持续时间为1分钟~72小时,VMC诊断标准中的B和C均不符合。对于以上3种疾病,患者的年龄必须<18岁。建议将来的研究应特别关注RVC,以研究和确定其可能的亚型及其与偏头痛的关系。

Road geometric design data are a vital input for diverse transportation studies. This information is usually obtained from the road design project. However, these are not always available and the as-built course of the road may diverge considerably from its projected one, rendering subsequent studies inaccurate or impossible. Moreover, the systematic acquisition of this data for the entire road network of a country or even a state represents a very challenging and laborious task. This study"s goal was the extraction of geometric design data for the paved segments of the Brazilian federal highway network, containing more than 47,000 km of highways. It presents the details of the method"s adoption process, the particularities of its application to the dataset and the obtained geometric design information. Additionally, it provides a first overview of the Brazilian federal highway network composition (curves and tangents) and geometry.

Lymphomas are neoplastic transformations that affect lymphoid cells. Diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has a high degree of cell proliferation, accounting for 30% of all lymphomas. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide and the recommended treatment is chemotherapy. Among the main complications resulting from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer and chemotherapy used in their treatment, we can mention sepsis, acute kidney injury and febrile neutropenia. Febrile neutropenia can occur by suppressing the production of neutrophils. Sepsis, a widespread infection, is the main cause of acute kidney injury, which can also be caused by hydroelectrolytic complications or by nephrotoxicity. This is a report of a smoking patient with metastatic lung cancer who sought care due to progressive dysphagia, cough with chest pain, fever, and lower airways critical obstruction due to mediastinal lymphadenopathy, being diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The patient evolved to death because of a significant worsening of the ventilatory pattern of multifactorial cause, mainly due to sepsis, acute kidney injury, and febrile neutropenia. The patient had mostly classic characteristics of her comorbidities, however, the overlapping of interrelated comorbidities led to the outcome of death. What is unusual about the present case report is that the patient’s characteristics, such as age, sex, and ethnicity, are opposite to those described as risk factors for diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

This documentary research aimed to describe the results of an epidemiological survey that sought to determine the prevalence of Infections Related to Health Care (IRHC) in newborns admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the city of Rio de Janeiro. For methodology, the existing data in the original research database were used as the primary source. The method used was the case study in a quantitative approach. The data have been statistically arranged by odds ratio, which measured the possibility of IRHC development at the 102 newborns, by exposition at the risk factors. Results: IRHC prevalence with pneumonias, sepsis, navel’s infection and ocular infections predominance rises. Prematures are 4.10 more susceptible. Twelve hours after amniotic rupture there are 1.77 more chances of infections. Babies with more than 10 days of hospitalization are 4.70 more susceptible than those with 10 days. The registers examined were incipient at the IRHC’s characterization, beginning and duration, which make the IRHC’s diagnostic/notification difficult.
