The phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase(PI3K) pathway is frequently altered in cancer, including ovarian cancer(OC). Unfortunately, despite a sound biological rationale and encouraging activity in preclinical models, trials of first-generation inhibitors of mammalian target of rapamycin(m TOR) in OC have demonstrated negative results. The lack of patient selection as well as resistance to selective m TOR complex-1(m TORC1) inhibitors could explain the disappointing results thus far. Nonetheless, a number of novel agents are being investigated, including dual m TORC1/m TORC2, Akt, and PI3 K inhibitors. Although it is likely that inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/m TOR pathway may have little effect in unselected OC patients, certain histological types, such as clear cell or endometrioid OC with frequent phosphatidylinositol-4,5-biphosphate 3-kinase, catalytic subunit alpha(PIK3CA) and/or phosphatase and tensin homolog(PTEN) alterations, may be particularly suited to this approach. Given the complexity and redundancy of the PI3 K signaling network, PI3 K pathway inhibition may be most useful in combination with either chemotherapy or other targeted therapies, such as MEK inhibitors, anti-angiogenic therapy, and hormonal therapy, in appropriately selected OC patients. Here, we discuss the relevance of the PI3 K pathway in OC and provide an up-to-date review of clinical trials of novel PI3 K inhibitors alone or in combination with cytotoxics and novel therapies in OC. In addition, the challenges of drug resistance and predictive biomarkers are addressed.

This paper explores fangmugou （＂imitating the mode of building with wood＂）, a comprehensive and longstanding architectural leitmotif reflective of the socio-cultural environment of China. Whether carved in stone, molded in clay, or cast in metal fangmugou continuously serves to visually confn＇m and ratify the significance of wood as the primary building material in Chinese architectural history. By peeling offthe successive layers of distortion between model and replica, this paper uncovers the traces of wood embedded infangmugou, and deciphers the visual and symbolic language that evolved out of the physical properties of wood, even as the final product transcends materiality by adapting to new media.

Lung cancer contributes substantially to the global burden of disease and healthcare costs. New screening modalities using low-dose computerized tomography are promising tools for early detection leading to curative surgery. However, the screening and follow-up diagnostic procedures of these techniques may be costly. Focusing on prevention is an important factor to reduce the burden of screening, treatment, and lung cancer deaths. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has identified several lung carcinogens, which we believe can be considered actionable when developing prevention strategies. To curb the societal burden of lung cancer, healthcare resources need to be focused on early detection and screening and on mitigating exposure（s） of a person to known lung carcinogens, such as active tobacco smoking, household air pollution （HAP）, and outdoor air pollution. Evidence has also suggested that these known lung carcinogens may be associated with genetic predispositions, supporting the hypothesis that lung cancers attributed to differing exposures may have developed from unique underlying genetic mechanisms attributed to the exposure of interest. For instance, smoking- attributed lung cancer involves novel genetic markers of risk compared with HAP-attributed lung cancer. Therefore, genetic risk markers may be used in risk stratification to identify subpopulations that are at a higher risk for developing lung cancer attributed to a given exposure. Such targeted prevention strategies suggest that precision prevention strategies may be possible in the future; however, much work is needed to determine whether these strategies will be viable.

The Austrian art historian Alois Riegl(1858-1905)revolutionised the European concept of the monument and paved the way towards the codification of the historicity of artefacts at the international ***,conservation work and relevant terminology still build upon the principles first outlined in his work Der moderne Denkmalkultus(1903)more than a hundred years *** yet,modern information/communication technologies have long challenged the idea of‘age value’(Alterswert),of a monument possessing value simply because it shows‘signs of age’(Altersspuren),through their ability to digitally recreate historical architecture in its original form and thereby to transcend the boundaries of time and *** paper discusses the challenges and opportunities for monument preservation in the 21st century in the light of Riegl’s thoughts on how to perceive(‘visualise’)the *** investigates the validity of Riegl’s theories in the context of today’s virtual reality/ies at a theoretical level,and their potential for advancement in preservation theory,expanding on historical thoughts rooted in 18th and 19th century preservation *** analysing Riegl’s commemorative values,stratigraphic picturing of history’s material debris,and fear of formlessness,this paper explores digitisation as the driving force for change in attitude from traditional,restrictive thinking to a modern way of thinking which is receptive to new technological developments,including,for example,exploring augmented and virtual realities as a means of achieving the sensory aesthetic experience required by age value.

With the recent development of high entropy materials, an alternative approach to develop advanced functional materials with distinctive properties that show improved values compared to conventional materials has been provided. The high entropy concept was later successfully transferred to metal fluorides and high entropy fluorides(HEFs) were successfully synthesized. Owing to their high theoretical specific capacities in energy storage applications, HEFs were utilized as cathode materials for lithiumion batteries(LIBs) and their underlying storage mechanisms were investigated. Instead of a step-bystep reduction of each individual metal cation, the HEFs seem to exhibit a single-step reduction process,indicating a solid solution compound instead of merely a mixture of different metal fluorides. It was also observed that the electrochemical behavior of the HEFs depends on each individual incorporated element. Therefore, by altering the elemental composition, new materials that exhibit improved electrochemical properties can be designed. Remarkably, HEFs with seven incorporated metal elements exhibited a better cycling stability as well as a lower hysteresis compared to binary metal *** findings offer new guidelines for material design and tailoring towards high performance LIBs.
