Do people communicate about their whereabouts? Investigating the relation between user-generated text messages and Foursquare check-in places

The social functionality of places(***,restaurant)partly determines human behaviors and reflects a region’s functional *** descriptions of places are thus valuable to a range of studies of humans and geographic *** their potential impacts on human verbalization behaviors,one possibility is to link the functions of places to verbal representations such as users’postings in location-based social networks(LBsNs).In this study,we examine whether the heterogeneous user-generated text snippets found in LBsNs reliably reflect the semantic concepts attached with check-in *** investigate Foursquare because its available categorization hierarchy provides rich a-priori semantic knowledge about its check-in places,which enables a reliable verification of the semantic concepts identified fromuser-generated text snippets.A latent semantic analysis is conducted on a large Foursquare check-in *** results confirm that attached text messages can represent semantic concepts by demonstrating their large correspondence to the official Foursquare venue *** further elaborate the representativeness of text messages,this work also performs an investigation on the textual terms to quantify their abilities of representing semantic concepts(i.e.,representativeness),and another investigation on semantic concepts to quantify how well they can be represented by text messages(i.e.,representability).The results shed light on featured terms with strong locational characteristics,as well as on distinctive semantic concepts with potentially strong impacts on human verbalizations.

Nowadays,several research projects show interest in employing volunteered geographic information(VGI)to improve their systems through using up-to-date and detailed *** European project CAP4Access is one of the successful examples of such international-wide research projects that aims to improve the accessibility of people with restricted mobility using crowdsourced *** this project,OpenstreetMap(OsM)is used to extend OpenRouteservice,a well-known routing ***,a basic challenge that this project tackled was the incompleteness of OsM data with regards to certain information that is required for wheelchair accessibility(*** information,kerb data,etc.).In this article,we present the results of initial assessment of sidewalk data in OsM at the beginning of the project as well as our approach in awareness raising and using tools for tagging accessibility data into OsM database for enriching the sidewalk data *** experiments have been carried out in different European cities,and discussion on the results of the experiments as well as the lessons learned are *** lessons learned provide recommendations that help in organizing better mapping party events in the *** conclude by reporting on how and to what extent the OsM sidewalk data completeness in these study areas have benefited from the mapping parties by the end of the project.

In post-earthquake surveys,it is difficult(and often infeasible)to observe and quantify displacements beyond line-of-sight(LOs),given seismic force-resisting and gravity systems exist completely or partially within a building′s *** overcome this limitation,we develop a novel framework that generalizes graph-based state estimation towards structural joint localization via engineered *** landmarks provide an indirect means to estimate residual displacements where direct LOs is *** our framework,engineered landmarks define topologies of uniquely identifiable landmarks that are either visible or non-visible to a robot performing simultaneous localization and mapping(sLAM).Within the sLAM approach,factors encoding robot odometry and robot-to-visible landmark measurements are formulated for the cases of wireless sensing and fiducial object detection and *** landmarks are rigidly attached to non-visible landmark subsets for each engineered landmark,where the complete set of non-visible landmarks form globally rigid and localizable connectivity graphs via range-based *** subsets of non-visible landmarks are embedded within the base structure and uniquely define joint pose via geometric *** factors are unified within a common graph to solve for the maximum a posteriori estimate of robot,landmark,and joint states via nonlinear least squares *** demonstrate the applicability of our approach,we apply the Monte Carlo method over a parameterization of system noise to calculate residual joint pose error distributions,maximum average inter-story drift ratios,and related summary statistics for a 19-story nonlinear structural *** performing nonlinear time history analyses over sets of service-level and maximum considered earthquakes,our parametric study gives insight into our method′s application towards post-earthquake building evaluation in non-LOs conditions.

Testicular varicocele, a dilation of the veins of the pampiniform plexus thought to increase testicular temperature via venous congestion, is commonly associated with male infertility. significant study has clarified the negative impact of varicocele on semen parameters and more recent work has shed light on its detrimental effects on the molecular and ultrastructural features of sperm and the testicular microenvironment, as well as more clearly defined the positive impacts of treatment on couples＇ fertility. The relationship between varicocele and testicular endocrine function, while known for some time based on histologic evaluation, has become more apparent in the clinical setting with a growing link between varicocele and hypogonadism. Finally, in the pediatric setting, while future study will clarify the impact of varicocele on fertility and testicular function, recent work supports a parallel effect of varicocele in adolescents and adults, suggesting a re-evaluation of current treatment approaches in light of the progressive nature of the condition and potential increased risk of future disease.

Intracranial atherosclerotic disease(ICAD) is the most common cause of ischemic stroke. Poor understanding of the disease due to limited human data leads to imprecise treatment. Apolipoprotein E knockout(ApoE-KO) rabbits were compared to an existing model, the Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic(WHHL) rabbit, and wild-type New Zealand white(NZW) rabbit controls. Intracranial artery samples were assessed on histopathology for the presence of ICAD. Logistic and ordinal regression analyses were performed to assess for disease presence and severity, respectively. Eighteen rabbits and 54 artery segments were analyzed. Univariate logistic analysis confirmed the presence of ICAD in model rabbits(P s found between WHHL and ApoE-KO rabbits(P =.178). In multivariate analysis, only classification as a model vs wild-type animal(P s associated with the presence of ICAD. Univariate ordinal regression analysis demonstrated an association between ICAD severity and model animals(P =.001), with no difference was noted between WHHL and ApoE-KO rabbits(P =.528). In multivariate ordinal regression analysis, only classification as a model retained significance(P s, developing the disease comparably to the older WHHL model. Further analysis is warranted to optimize accelerated development of ICAD in ApoE-KO rabbits to more efficiently study this disease.

As global air pollution becomes increasingly severe,various types of fibrous filters have been developed to improve air filter ***,fibrous filters have limitations such as high packing density that generally causes high-pressure drop and ultimately deterioration in the filtration ***-pressure particulate matter precipitators are limited in terms of scope for commercialization because they require high voltage supplies and ozone *** this study,we develop fibrous filters with enhanced durability and improved performance using metallized microfibers decorated with metal-organic-framework(MOF)*** only does the efficiency of the developed filters remain at or above 97%for 0.50-1.5μm PMs but the durability also significantly *** addition,using the water purification ability of the MOF,we explore the dye degradation effect of the hybrid microfibers by immersing them into Rhodamine B aqueous *** such an experiment the Rhodamine B aqueous solution is completely purified by the presence of the hybrid microfibers under the UV irradiation.
