Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with benign gastrointestinal disorders

Increased paracellular permeability of tumor-adjacent areas in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced colon carcinogenesis in rats

Objective: The morphology and functions of the proximal and distal large intestine are not the same. The incidence of colorectal cancer in these regions is also different, as tumors more often appear in the descending colon than in the ascending *** bowel disease and colorectal cancer can increase transepithelial permeability, which is a sign of reduced intestinal barrier function. However, there is not enough evidence to establish a connection between the difference in colorectal cancer incidence in the proximal and distal colon and intestinal permeability or the effects of carcinogenesis on the barrier properties in various areas of the colon. The aim of the study was to assess the permeability of different segments of the large intestine according to a developed mapping methodology in healthy rats and rats with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine(DMH)-induced colon ***: The short circuit current, the transepithelial electrical resistance and the paracellular permeability to fluorescein of large intestine wall of male Wistar rats were examined in the Ussing chambers. The optical density of the solution from the serosa side to assess the concentration of the diffused fluorescein from mucosa to serosa was analyzed by spectrophotometry. The morphometric and histological studies were performed by optical ***: Rats with DMH-induced colon adenocarcinomas showed elevated transepithelial electrical resistance in the areas of neoplasm development. The significance of total carbon in greensand systems

The need for control of raw materials is critical to the success of iron casting production from greensand systems. The base silica sand is often overlooked with the main focus on bentonite additions. Carbonaceous additives can be considered a "necessary evil" to ensure a good surface finish and reduction in sand related surface defects. Other additives are used when systems get out of balance and these in turn add further to the complex nature of greensand systems. For castings requiring cores this becomes a bigger issue as many differing resin systems are employed for core production and these must be taken into consideration when controlling both the carbonaceous levels and the overall grading of the sand system. The twin effects on additional carbon and loss-on-ignition and overall sand grading need careful understanding and control. Various control methods are examined including traditional methods such as volatiles and loss-on-ignition along with bentonite determination methods and grading methods. Newer control methods such as total carbon are reviewed along with the overall package of testing and control *** predictive methods are looked at as a control feature as well. The quality of additives and their role and more importantly their interaction is highlighted,as this is an area often neglected as foundrymen battle for success in consistent quality castings. suggested in-coming control tests are discussed allied to additions at the mixer. Also reviewed is the interpretation of results and the action required to ensure control and more importantly consistent quality castings from greensand systems with the emphasis on the understanding and control of carbonaceous additive on casting performance.

Data obtained on conodont distribution in the Permian-Triassic sovetashen section of Transcaucasia provide further limitations on the age of the carbon-isotopic anomalies discovered by Baud et al. (1989). The significance of Caucasian sections for working out the carbon-isotope standard for the Upper Permian and Lower Triassic (Induan) is shown. Original data on carbon-isotope composition of bivalve and brachiopod shells from Permian sediments of North-Eastern Russia (Omolon and Okhotsk areas) have been obtained, which may be used for their correlation.

spatial avoidance of patches of polluted chernozem soils by soil invertebrates

soil invertebrates and heavy metal concentrations are heterogeneously distributed in the soil of steppe plots surrounding an iron mining enterprise in southern Russia. This study assesses whether patches of high soil invertebrate abundance coincide with patches of low concentrations of pollutants. For this aim, spatial analysis by distance indices （sADIE） was applied. Three valleys in Belogorye Nature Reserve were chosen. One valley faced the tailing pond to the north and the other two faced south-east or south-west. Two sampling plots were chosen in each valley, 60 m apart from each other. On every plot 16 soil cores were collected from a grid of 4 × 4 units with a 5-m distance between each sample unit. Each soil core had an area of 76 cm2 and was 12-15 cm deep. All macroinvertebrates were hand-sorted and identified to family. Abundance of soil invertebrates was not controlled by patches of metal concentration in the soil. Epigaeic groups, like insects and other invertebrates inhabiting the litter layer, were not directly associated with local parameters of the soil. On the contrary, belowground invertebrate abundance （elaterid larvae and earthworms） showed significant dissociation with some heavy metal （Fe, Pb, Zn） concentrations in the soil. The patchiness of soil pollution may act as a leading factor ofbelowground soil invertebrate distribution. The spatial structure of animal populations in industrially transformed soils needs further research.

The amyloid cascade hypothesis of Alzheimer’s pathogenesis:The amyloid cascade hypothesis of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)pathogenesis will shortly celebrate its thirtieth birthday(Hardy and Higgins,1992).Based on abundant genetic and biochemical evidence,it proposes that deposition of the amyloid-β(Aβ)peptide in brain parenchyma is an essential upstream trigger in AD pathogenesis that drives a cascade of events,specifically including the recruitment and pathological hyper-phosphorylation of the micro-tubule-associated protein tau,that culminate in derangement of synaptic function and,eventually,neuronal death.

Analysis of the X-ray emission of OB stars II: B stars

This paper is the second part of an investigation into the mechanism for the origin of X-rays in early-type stars. Archival X-ray observations of 25 B stars, obtained by the XMM-Newton satellite, are analysed. We check two hypotheses on the origin of X-ray emission: the Magnetically Confined Wind shock Model(MCWs) and Pollock’s paradigm. For all studied stars, the mean ratio of the half widths at half maximum to the terminal velocities appears to be R ≈ 0.15-0.20 in contradiction to Pollock’s hypothesis that R ≈ 0.5. We checked three possible consequences of the MCWs model: correlations between the hardness of the X-ray spectra for B stars and terminal wind velocities, mass loss rates and magnetic *** was shown that such correlations are marginal or even absent both for magnetic and non-magnetic B stars.

Despite a record setting number of heart transplants performed annually,the national donor shortage continues to plague transplant teams across the United *** we describe the barriers to adaptation of numerous“non-traditional”orthotopic heart transplant donor characteristics including donors with hepatitis C virus,those meeting criteria for donation after cardiac death,donors with coronavirus disease 19 infection,donors with the human immunodeficiency virus,and grafts with left ventricular systolic *** center’s objective was to increase our transplant volume by expanding our donor pool from“traditional”donors to these“non-traditional”*** detail how medical advances such as certain laboratory studies,pharmacologic interventions,and organ care systems have allowed our center to expand the donor pool thereby increasing transplantation volume without adverse effects on outcomes.
