CT-guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy in the interdisciplinary treatment of patients with liver metastases of pancreatic cancer

BACKGROUND： CT-guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy（CT-HDRBT） is an interventional radiologic technique for local ablation of primary and secondary malignomas applying a radiation source through a brachycatheter percutaneously into the targeted lesion. The aim of this study was to assess local tumor control, safety and efficacy of CT-HDRBT in the treatment of liver metastases of pancreatic cancer. METHODS： Twenty consecutive patients with 49 unresectable liver metastases of pancreatic cancer were included in this retrospective trial and treated with CT-HDRBT, applied as a single fraction high-dose irradiation（15-20 Gy） using a 192 Irsource. Primary endpoint was local tumor control and secondary endpoints were complications, progression-free survival and overall ***： The mean tumor diameter was 29 mm（range 10-73）. The mean irradiation time was 20 minutes（range 7-42）. The mean coverage of the clinical target volume was 98%（range 88%-100%）. The mean D100 was 18.1 Gy and the median D100 was 19.78 Gy. Three major complications occurred with post-interventional abscesses, three of which were seen in 15 patients with biliodigestive anastomosis（20%）and overall 15%. The mean follow-up time was 13.7 months（range 1.4-55.0）. The median progression-free survival was 4.9 months（range 1.4-42.9, mean 9.4）. Local recurrence occurred in 5（10%） of 49 metastases treated. The median overall survival after CT-HDRBT was 8.6 months（range 1.5-55.3）. Eleven patients received chemotherapy after ablation with a median progression-free survival of 4.9 months（mean 12.9）. Nine patients did not receive chemotherapy after intervention with a median progression-free survival of 3.2 months（mean 5.0）. The rate of local tumor control was 91% in both groups after 12 ***： CT-HDRBT was safe and effective for the treatment of liver metastases of pancreatic cancer.

Optical resonators are a powerful platform to control the spontaneous emission dynamics of excitons in solidstate nanostructures. We study a MoSe2-WSe2heterostructure that is integrated in a cryogenic open optical microcavity to gain insights into fundamental optical properties of the emergent interlayer excitons. First, we utilize a low-quality-factor planar open cavity and investigate the modification of the excitonic lifetime as on-and offresonance conditions are met with consecutive longitudinal modes.

The experimental determination of stability lobediagrams （SLDs） in milling can be realized by eithercontinuously varying the spindle speed or by varying thedepth of cut. In this paper, a method for combining boththese methods along with an online chatter detectionalgorithm is proposed for efficient determination of *** accomplish this, communication between the machinecontrol and chatter detection algorithm is established, andthe machine axes are controlled to change the spindle speedor depth of cut. The efficiency of the proposed method isanalyzed in this paper.

Due to the fluctuating character of the renewable energy sources the demand of conventional power plants for flexibility is increasing. In the recent years, in Germany there has been a fast rise of production capacity of renewable energies, especially from wind turbines, photovoltaic installations, and biomass plants. The installed nominal power of wind turbines is actually (December 2016) 42 GW and of photovoltaic installations 40 GW. The renewable electric energy production in Germany is about 190 TWh/a, which represents a share of 33% of the yearly demand. The increased need for flexibility affects both the power gradients as well as the minimum load of conventional power plants. Due to this flexibility behaviour, conventional power plants are faced with problems concerning the durability of power plant components, corrosion, more maintenance effort and consequently the overall life expectancy. Another consequence of the increasing share of renewable energies is the decreasing full load operating hours, especially of coal fired and gas power plants. Along with decreasing revenues from the energy exchange market, coal fired power plants are faced with new economically challenges.

In Central Europe,anthropogenic coniferous monocultures have been subject to conversion to more diverse mixed forests since the 1990s,however,they are still abundant across many forest *** and natural tree regeneration both play a key role during conversion by determining the species composition and structure of the future *** abiotic and biotic factors can potentially influence the regeneration process and its specific combinations or interactions may be different among tree species and its developmental ***,we aimed to identify and quantify the effect of the most important drivers on the density of the most abundant regenerating tree species(i.e.,Norway spruce and European beech),as well as on species and structural diversity of the tree *** studied tree regeneration in four former monospecific coniferous stand types(i.e.,Norway spruce,Scots pine,European larch,and Douglas fir)in Southwest Germany that have been under conversion to mixed forests since the *** sampled tree regeneration in four growth height classes together with a variety of potentially influencing factors on 108 sampling plots and applied multivariate *** identified light availability in the understorey,stand structural attributes,browsing pressure,and diaspore source abundance as the most important factors for the density and diversity of tree ***,we revealed speciesspecific differences in drivers of regeneration *** spruce profited from increasing light availability and decreasing stand basal area,beech benefited either from a minor reduction or more strikingly from an increase in overstorey *** diaspore source abundance positively and a high browsing pressure negatively affected both species *** results suggest that humus and topsoil properties were modified during conversion,probably due to changes in tree species composition and silvicultural *** species and structural

Tunable colors and conductivity by electroless growth of Cu/Cu2O particles on sol-gel modified cellulose

Development of colored surfaces by formation of nano-structured aggregates is a widely used strategy in nature to color lightweight structures (e.g. butterflies) without the use of dye pigments. The deposition of nanoscale particles mimics nature in it’s approach coloring surfaces. This work presents sol-gel modification of cellulose surfaces used to form a template for growth of Cu/Cu2O core–shell particles with defined size-distributions. Besides improving the adhesion of the deposited particulate material, the sol-gel matrix serves as a template for the control of particle sizes of the Cu/Cu2O structures, and as a consequence of particle size variation the surface color is tunable. As an example, red color was achieved with an average particle size of 35 nm, and shifts gradually to blue appearance when particles have grown to 80 nm on the sol-gel modified fabric. The copper concentration on representative fabrics is kept low to avoid modifying the textile characteristics and were all in the range of 150–170 mg per g of cellulose material. As a result of copper deposition on the surface of the material, the cellulose fabric also became electrically conductive. Remarkably, the electrical conductivity was found to be dependent on the average particle sizes of the deposits and thus related to the change in observed color. The generation of color by growth of nano-sized particles on sol-gel templates provides a highly promising approach to stain surfaces by physical effects without use of synthetic colorants, which opens a new strategy to improve environmental profile of coloration.

Versatile multiplexed super-resolution imaging of nanostructures by Quencher-Exchange-PAINT

The optical super-resolution technique DNA-PAINT (Point Accumulation Imaging in Nanoscale Topography) provides a flexible way to achieve imaging of nanoscale structures at ∼10-nanometer resolution. In DNA-PAINT, fluorescently labeled DNA “imager” strands bind transiently and with high specificity to complementary target “docking” strands anchored to the structure of interest. The localization of single binding events enables the assembly of a super-resolution image, and this approach effectively circumvents photobleaching. The solution exchange of imager strands is the basis of Exchange-PAINT, which enables multiplexed imaging that avoids chromatic aberrations. Fluid exchange during imaging typically requires specialized chambers or washes, which can disturb the sample. Additionally, diffusional washout of imager strands is slow in thick samples such as biological tissue slices. Here, we introduce Quencher-Exchange-PAINT—a new approach to Exchange-PAINT in regular open-top imaging chambers—which overcomes the comparatively slow imager strand switching via diffusional imager washout. Quencher-Exchange-PAINT uses “quencher” strands, i.e., oligonucleotides that prevent the imager from binding to the targets, to rapidly reduce unwanted single-stranded imager concentrations to negligible levels, decoupled from the absolute imager concentration. The quencher strands contain an effective dye quencher that reduces the fluorescence of quenched imager strands to negligible levels. We characterized Quencher-Exchange-PAINT when applied to synthetic, cellular, and thick tissue samples. Quencher-Exchange-PAINT opens the way for efficient multiplexed imaging of complex nanostructures, e.g., in thick tissues, without the need for washing steps.

Efficient offline production of freestanding thin plastic foils for laser-driven ion sources

Modern chirped pulse amplification laser systems with continuously improving controllability and increasing power are about to reach intensities of up to 10^(22) W cm^(-2) and have proven their potential to accelerate ions out of plasma to several tens percent of the speed of light. For enabling application, one important step is to increase the repetition rate at which ion bunches are at the disposal. In particular, techniques used so far for thin foil target production can require several days of preparing reasonable amounts for a single campaign. In this paper we describe the reasonably droplet method which we have tested and improved so that the emerging foils with thicknesses of a few nanometres up to micrometre can be used as targets for laser ion acceleration. Their quality and performance can compete with so far employed techniques thereby enabling the production of hundreds of targets per day.
