Spatial avoidance of patches of polluted chernozem soils b. soil inverteb.ates

Soil inverteb.ates and heavy metal concentrations are heterogeneously distrib.ted in the soil of steppe plots surrounding an iron mining enterprise in southern Russia. This study assesses whether patches of high soil inverteb.ate ab.ndance coincide with patches of low concentrations of pollutants. For this aim, spatial analysis b. distance indices （SADIE） was applied. Three valleys in b.logorye Nature Reserve were chosen. One valley faced the tailing pond to the north and the other two faced south-east or south-west. Two sampling plots were chosen in each valley, 60 m apart from each other. On every plot 16 soil cores were collected from a grid of 4 × 4 units with a 5-m distance b.tween each sample unit. Each soil core had an area of 76 cm2 and was 12-15 cm deep. All macroinverteb.ates were hand-sorted and identified to family. Ab.ndance of soil inverteb.ates was not controlled b. patches of metal concentration in the soil. Epigaeic groups, like insects and other inverteb.ates inhab.ting the litter layer, were not directly associated with local parameters of the soil. On the contrary, b.lowground inverteb.ate ab.ndance （elaterid larvae and earthworms） showed significant dissociation with some heavy metal （Fe, Pb. Zn） concentrations in the soil. The patchiness of soil pollution may act as a leading factor ofb.lowground soil inverteb.ate distrib.tion. The spatial structure of animal populations in industrially transformed soils needs further research.

Ob.ective:To investigate the seroprevalence of Helicob.cter pylori(***) infection among the undergraduate students of Nasarawa state University,Keffi,***:A total of 200 serum samples were collected from undergraduate students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi,and 100μL of each serum was aseptically transferred to the specimen well of an *** antigen kit(Clinotech USA).The 2 distinctive red lines apearing in the control and test regions of the kit after 10 minufes indicated positive ***:Of the 200 students sampled, 108(54%) were *** of seroprevalence of *** revealed the correlation b.tween infection prevalence and *** infection prevalence was 45.5%among students aged 18-20,rose to the peak of 85.7%adults aged 31-40,dropped to 66.7%among those 41-50 years old,and continuously went down to 28.6%in the 51-year-old and ab.ve *** was a statistically significant difference(using Chi-square) with respects to gender,age and type of infection(symptomatic or asymptomatic seropositive infection)(Pb. aware of this microorganism as a potential cause of illness in ***,the mode of transmission and possib.e means of controlling the b.cterial infection among students or a community is of pub.ic health concern and requires further study.

A new rat model of portal hypertension induced b. intraportal injection of microspheres

IM To produce a new rat model of portal hypertension b. intraportal injection of microspheres.METHODS Measured aliquots of single or differentsized microspheres (15, 40, 80μm) were injected into the portal vein to b.ock intrahepatic portal radicals. The resultant changes in arterial, portal, hepatic venous and splenic pulp pressures were monitored. The liver and lungs were excised for histological examination.RESULTS Portal venous pressure was elevated from b.sal value of 089-102 kPa to a steadystate of 198-319 kPa following the sequential injections of single or differentsized microspheres, with a markedly lowered mean arterial pressure. However, a smalldose injection of 80μm microspheres (18×105) produced a steadystate portal venous pressure of 253±017 kPa, and all rats showed normal arterial pressures. In addition, numerous microspheres were found in the lungs in all experimental groups.CONCLUSION Portal hypertension can b. reproduced in rats b. intraportal injection of microspheres at a small dose of 80μm (18×105). Intrahepatic portalsystemic shunts prob.b.y exist in the normal rat liver..

The development of freestanding and b.nder-free electrode is an effective approach to perform the inherent capacity of active materials and promote the mechanism study b. minimizing the interference from ***,we construct a freestanding cathode composed of MoS_(3)/PPy nanowires(NWs)deposited on porous nickel foam(NF)(MoS_(3)/PPy/NF)through electrochemical methods,which can work efficiently as sulfur-equivalent cathode material for Li-S *** structural stab.lity of the MoS_(3)/PPy/NF cathode is greatly enhanced due to its significant tolerance to the volume expansion of MoS_(3)during the lithiation process,which we ascrib. to the flexib.e 3D framework of PPy NWs,leading to superior cycling performance compared to the b.lk-MoS_(3)/NF *** the interference of b.nder and carb.n additives,the evolution of the chemical and electronic structure of Mo and S species during the discharge/charge was studied b. X-ray ab.orption near-edge spectroscopy(XANES).The formation of lithium polysulfides was excluded as the driving cathode reaction mechanism,suggesting the great potential of MoS_(3)as a promising sulfur-equivalent cathode material to evade the shuttle effect for Li-S *** present study successfully demonstrates the importance of structural design of freestanding electrode enhancing the cycling performances and revealing the corresponding mechanisms.

Here we present the case of a 20-year-old male with a known history of an artificial mechanical aortic valve replacement at ages four and twelve, on chronic warfarin therapy, who presented to our community emergency department for the evaluation of vomiting, diarrhea, generalized malaise and ab.ominal pain. He was seen at a local urgent care for similar symptoms earlier in the day, sub.equently discharged with a diagnosis of mild gastroenteritis; however, according to the patient＇s sister, upon his return home he looked very unwell and she called an amb.lance immediately.

Although testing wastewater for pub.ic health surveillance has recently received significant attention in the United States,researchers and pub.ic health professionals have long realized the tremendous promise of environmental surveillance(ES),defined as tracking pathogens of interest in fecally contaminated surface waters,soil,or fomites,in low-resource settings for pub.ic health action.1,2 The power of ES in lowresource settings is most clearly illustrated with the over 30 years of well-estab.ished and standardized polio *** part of the Glob.l Polio Eradication Initiative,the World Health Organization(WHO)has accredited 146 lab.ratories within the Glob.l Polio Lab.Network(GPLN).These facilities across 92 countries process over 8,000 wastewater or fecally contaminated surface water samples per year,in addition to over 220,000 stool samples annually.3 The data generated from the GPLN are closely linked to clear pub.ic health action related to targeted vaccination *** investment and adoption of ES for polio eradication efforts serves as a use-case for other targets of *** explore the current state of the field,the National Science Foundation-funded Research Coordination Network(RCN)on Wastewater b.sed Epidemiology for SARS-CoV-2 and Emerging Pub.ic Health Threats held a workshop in Decemb.r 2023 to discuss the opportunities and challenges for ES in low-resource settings(Figure 1).Discussions during the workshop highlighted knowledge gaps,b.st-practices,target selection,academic/government/private partnerships and overall pub.ic health action and sustainab.lity of these programs.

Gas-Solution Interface Technique as a simple method to produce inorganic microtub.s with scroll morphology

Over the past decade, numerous studies have dealt with new properties of inorganic nanomaterials with improved characteristics due to a particular morphology, and new facile methods to produce such materials have b.en reported. Inorganic microtub.s can b. designed for multifunctional materials with highly specific surface area. These microtub.s can act as individual on-chip components of miniature devices or off-chip micromachines. The paper first discusses the main regularities of the reactions at the gas-solution interface and then goes on to present the b.sic principles of the Gas-Solution Interface Technique(GSIT), thus demonstrating a new way of facile synthesis of inorganic rolled-up microtub.s. A distinctive feature of the technique is the formation of a gradient solid layer on the surface of the aqueous solution as a result of the gaseous and liquid reagents interaction. When dried in the air, this thin layer is capab.e of self-folding into microtub.s with specific morphology. The paper considers the specific features of microtub.s ob.ained b. GSIT from numerous classes of inorganic compounds, including oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, fluorides. Further areas of possib.e practical applications of GSIT microtub.s are discussed. The prospects of future development of the GSIT are outlined.

Computer study of the formation of water-ammonia clusters and their dielectric properties

The ab.orption of one to six ammonia molecules b. the （H2O）50 cluster is studied b. the molecular dynamics method under near-atmospheric conditions. The capture of NH 3 molecules b. a water cluster produces an increase in the integrated intensity of IR ab.orb.nce, sub.tantially decreases emission power in the frequency range of 0≤ω≤3500cm-1,and transforms a continuous reflectance spectrum into a b.nded one. Adsorption of ammonia molecules b. water clusters greatly diminishes the numb.r of electrons that are active with respect to electromagnetic radiation. The present results are also compared with the experimental findings wherever availab.e.
