Electronic sensors based on biomaterials can lead to novel green technologies that are low cost,renewable,and *** we demonstrate bioelectronic ammonia sensors made from protein nanowires harvested from the microorganism Geobacter *** nanowire sensor responds to a broad range of ammonia concentrations(10 to 10^6 ppb),which covers the range relevant for industrial,environmental,and biomedical *** sensor also demonstrates high selectivity to ammonia compared to moisture and other common gases found in human *** results provide a proof-of-concept demonstration for developing protein nanowire based gas sensors for applications in industry,agriculture,environmental monitoring,and healthcare.

Underutilization of palliative care services in the liver transplant population

AIM To evaluate use of palliative care services in patients with end-stage liver disease who do not have access to liver *** Evaluated were end-stage liver disease patients who were removed from the liver transplant wait-list or died prior to transplant at a single transplant center over a 2-year period. Those who were removed due to noncompliance or ultimately transplanted elsewhere were excluded from this study. Patient characteristics associated with palliative care consultation were assessed using logistic regression *** Six hundred and eighty-three patients were listed for liver transplant in 2013-2014 with 107(16%) dying(n = 62) or removed for clinical decompensation prior to liver transplant(n = 45): Median age was 58 years, and the majority were male(66%), Caucasian(53%), had Child C cirrhosis(61%) or hepatocellular carcinoma(52%). The palliative care team was consulted in only 18 of the 107 patients(17%) who died or were removed, 89% of which occurred as inpatients. Half of these consultations occurred within 72 h of death. In univariable analysis, patients of younger age, white race, and higher end-stage liver disease scores at time of listing and delisting were more likely to receive palliative care services. Only younger age [Odds ratio(OR) = 0.92; P = 0.02] and Caucasian race(OR = 4.90; P = 0.02) were still associated with integration of palliative care services through multivariable *** Palliative care services are grossly underutilized in older, non-white patients with cirrhosis on the liver transplant wait-list. We encourage early integration of these services into clinical decision-making in the transplant population, with further studies aimed at understanding barriers to consultation.

Dear Editor The use of sequence-specific nucleases for plant genomic DNA mutagenesis is an exciting and rapidly developing tech- nology （Voytas and Merchant, 2013; Baltes and Voytas, 2014）. To date, most mutated plants have been recovered from transgenic plants stably expressing nucleases. However, transient nuclease delivery by plant DNA- and RNA-based viral vectors followed by regeneration of plantlets from modi- fied tissues has emerged as an alternative, efficient strategy in some plant species （Marton et al., 2010; Baltes et al., 2014）. Delivery of nucleases by plant RNA viruses is particularly attractive because they typically do not integrate into the plant genome, and therefore the mutated plants are not classified as transgenic （Marton et al., 2013; Voytas and Gao, 2014）.

Despite significant advances in abdominal wall reconstruction,parastomal hernias remain a complex problem,with a high risk of recurrence following *** a number of surgical hernia repair techniques have been proposed,there is no consensus on optimal *** clinical variables must be considered when developing a comprehensive repair plan that minimizes the likelihood of hernia recurrence and surgical site *** this review,we describe the incidence of parastomal hernias and discuss pertinent risk factors,medical history findings,physical examination findings,supplementary diagnostic modalities,parastomal hernia classification systems,surgical indications,and repair *** consideration is given to the discussion of mesh reinforcement,including available biomaterials,anatomic plane selection,and the extent of mesh *** open repairs are the primary focus of this article,minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic approaches are also briefly *** is our hope that the provided surgical outcome data will help guide surgical management and optimize outcomes for affected patients.
