The olfactory system.of Pieris brassicae caterpllars:from.receptors to glom.ruli

Tolfactory system.of adult lepidopterans is am.ng the best described neuronal ***,com.aratively little is known about the organization of the olfactory system.in the larval stage of these ***,we explore the expression of olfactory receptors and the organization of olfactory sensory neurons in caterpillars of Pieris brassicae,a significant pest species in Europe and a well-studied species for its chem.cal *** describe the larval olfactory system.in this species,we first analyzed the head transcriptom. of third-instar larvae(L3)and identified 16 odorant receptors(ORs)including the OR coreceptor(Orco),13 ionotropic receptors(IRs),and 8 gustatory receptors(GRs).We then quantified the expression of these 16 ORs in different life stages,using qPCR,and found that the m.jority of ORs had significantly higher expression in the L4 stage than in the L3 and L5 stages,indicating that the larval olfactory system.is not static throughout caterpillar *** an Orco-specific antibody,we identified all olfactory receptor neurons(ORNs)expressing the Orco protein in L3,L4,and L5 caterpillars and found a total of 34 Orco-positive ORNs,distributed am.ng three sensilla on the *** num.er of Orco-positive ORNs did not differ am.ng the three larval ***,we used retrograde axon tracing of the antennal nerve and identified a m.an of 15 glom.ruli in the larval antennal center(LAC),suggesting that the caterpillar olfactory system.follows a sim.lar design as the adult olfactory system.although with a lower num.rical *** together,our results provide a detailed analysis of the larval olfactory neurons in P brassicae,highlighting both the differences as well as the com.onalities with the adult olfactory *** findings contribute to a better understanding of the developm.nt of the olfactory system.in insects and its life-stage-specific adaptations.

PFC Sigm. Cobalt-Chrom. Total Knee Replacem.nt: Early Outcom.s Dem.nstrate No Significant Early Failures at the Three-Year m.rk

The PFC Sigm. Cobalt Chrom. Sigm. (PFCSCC) was introduced in 2006, and represents further developm.nt of the PFC Sigm. design aim.ng at reducing the problem.of backside wear. To ensure that there were no significant early failures following the introduction of this knee system.to our hospital in 2006, we prospectively identified all patients undergoing TKA with the PFCSCC over a one-year period. Clinical and dem.graphic patient data, Am.rican Knee Society scores, Oxford Knee scores, SF-12 scores and radiographic data were recorded preoperatively and at three-year post surgery. 233 patients underwent 249 prim.ry knee arthroplasties with the PFCSCC. Seven patients (eight TKAs) died before the last review and eight cases were lost to follow up. m.an age was 66.7 (range 34 - 80) with 47.6% m.le. m.an follow-up days were 1109 (range 741 to 1591). 5 (2.2%) were revised for infection with 1 revised for pain. The 3-year survival rate was 97.6% and 99.6% for aseptic failure. AKS 46.2 (0 - 95) was preoperatively 88.3 (17 - 100) with 3 years P 0.001. OKS 39.0 (22 - 53) was preoperatively 22.6 (12 - 53) with 3 years P 0.001. 17 of the 219 who had x-rays (8%) had radiolucent zones on x-ray. Our results dem.nstrate a good early aseptic survivorship of the PFCSCC at three years of 99.6%, com.ined with a good functional and objective im.rovem.nt in our patients in three years.

Com.arason of Peri-Articular m.ltim.dal Drug Injection with Fem.ral and Sciatic Nerve Block after Total Knee Arthroplasty

Good perioperative analgesia following total knee arthroplasty facilitates rehabilitation and m.y reduce hospital stay. We present the patient analgesic requirem.nts and rehabilitation of a prospective single surgeon series after the introduction of a m.ltim.dal drug injection during his total knee arthroplasty. Basic epidem.ological data as well as analgesic, antiem.tic requirem.nts and tim. to straight leg raised was collected on 27 consecutive patients (group 1) whom.received the m.ltim.dal drug injection, consisting of levobupivacaine, ketorolac and adrenaline at the tim. of their total knee arthroplasty under spinal anaesthesia. Their rehabilitation was com.ared to a retrospective review of patients who were case m.tched by age and sex (group 2n = 26), whom.had received the unit standard of spinal anaesthetic and a fem.ral and sciatic block at the tim. of their operation. Patients in group 1 had significantly lower analgesic and antiem.tic requirem.nts than group 2. Group 1 also had a significantly shorter hospital stay. We have dem.nstrated that periarticular m.ltim.dal drug injection can im.rove perioperative analgesia and m.bilisation following total knee arthroplasty as well as reducing opioid requirem.nts and side effects.

Effects of site preparation m.thods on soil physical properties and outplanting success of coniferous seedlings in boreal forests

This study assessed the effect of patch scarification and m.unding on the physical properties of the root layer and the success of tree planting in various types of *** study was conducted on 12 forest sites in taiga forests of the European part of Russia.A total of 54 plots were set up to assess seedling survival;root collar diam.ter,height,and heigh increm.nt were m.asured for 240 seedlings to assess *** the rooting layer,240 soil sam.les were taken to determ.ne physical *** study showed that soil treatm.nt m.thods had no effect on bulk density and total porosity in Cladina ***,reduced soil m.isture was noted,particularly in m.unds,resulting in increased *** m.rtillus sites,there were increased bulk density,reduced soil m.isture,and total porosity in the *** treatm.nt in Polytrichum.sites resulted in reduced soil m.isture and increased aeration *** the m.rtillus and Polytrichum.sites,patch scarification had no effects on physical *** Polytrichum.sites,survival rates,heights,and heigh increm.nts of bareroot Norway spruce seedlings in m.unds were higher than in patches;however,the sam. did not apply to *** Cladina and m.rtillus sites,there was no difference in growth for bareroot and containerised seedlings with different soil *** conditions and soil types should be considered when applying different soil treatm.nt m.thods to ensure high survival rates and successful seedling growth.

A Statistical Study of m.gnetic Flux Em.rgence in Solar Active Regions Prior to Strongest Flares

Using the data on m.gnetic field m.ps and continuum.intensity for Solar Cycles 23 and 24,we explored 100 active regions(ARs)that produced m..0 or stronger *** focus on the presence/absence of the em.rgence of m.gnetic flux in these ARs 2-3 days before the strong flare *** found that 29 ARs in the sam.le em.rged m.notonically am.dst quiet-Sun.A m.jor em.rgence of a new m.gnetic flux within a pre-existing AR yielding the form.tion of a com.lex flare-productive configuration was observed in another 24 *** 30 ARs,an insignificant(in term. of the total m.gnetic flux of pre-existing AR)em.rgence of a new m.gnetic flux within the pre-existing m.gnetic configuration was observed;for som. of them.the em.rgence resulted in a form.tion of a configuration with a sm.ll δ-sunspot;11 out of 100 ARs exhibited no signatures of m.gnetic flux em.rgence during the entire interval of *** six cases the em.rgence was in progress when the AR appeared on the Eastern lim.,so that the classification and tim.ng of em.rgence were not *** conclude that the recent flux em.rgence is not a necessary and/or sufficient condition for strong flaring of an *** flux em.rgence rate of flare-productive ARs analyzed here was com.ared with that of flare-quiet ARs analyzed in our previous *** revealed that the flare-productive ARs tend to display faster em.rgence than the flare-quiet ones do.

The Functional Outcom. of Total Knee Replacem.nt in Young Patients: A 10-Year m.tched Case Control Study

We present the results of a prospective study on the functional outcom. from.total knee replacem.nt (TKR) in young versus old patients. Am.rican Knee Society and pain scores over ten years post TKR were com.ared using a cohort of young patients (≤55 years) and a control group of patients ≥56, m.tched for ASA, body m.ss index and preoperative condition. A total of 24 young and 24 older knees were analysed. All scores im.roved significantly over tim.. There was no statistical differences over 10 years in pain (p = 0.436) and knee perform.nce (0.618). Overall function was consistently higher in the younger group (p = 0.004). TKR in younger patients produces sim.lar outcom.s in term. of pain and function com.ared with older patients and we feel that TKR should not be withheld on account of age alone.
