Shock response mitigation of a large-scale structure by modal energy redistribution facilitated by a strongly nonlinear absorber

A lightweight geometrically nonlinear attachment,the strongly nonlinear absorber(SNA),is adopted to suppress the shock response of a linear,large-scale nine-story *** role of the SNA is not only to dissipate but also to redistribute the shock energy among the modes of the *** this study,single-and two-degree-of-freedom(SDOf and Two-DOf)SNAs are *** quantitative results for shock energy redistribution indicate that with strong geometric nonlinearity,one can achieve low-to-high frequency nonlinear targeted energy transfer in this ***,the percentages of shock energy dissipated by higher structural modes for the cases of locked SNA,SDOf SNA,and Two-DOf SNA are 0.08%,0.43%,and 30.04%,*** results indicate that the Two-DOf SNA is capable of rapidly scattering far more energy to much higher frequencies than the SDOf SNA,thereby more quickly reducing the shock response of the primary *** robustness of the performance of the SNAs is also studied for varying shock intensities,where the Two-DOf SNA is shown to be significantly more robust at scattering shock energy from low to high ***,an effective damping measure is employed to verify and quantify the redistribution of the modal energies in the primary *** potential applications of this new passive shock mitigation method are discussed.

Soil erosion in mountain rangelands in Kyrgyzstan is an emerging problem due to vegetation loss caused by overgrazing. It is further exacerbated by mountain terrain and high precipitation values in fergana range in the south of Kyrgyzstan. The main objective of this study was to map soil erodibility in the mountainous rangelands of Kyrgyzstan. The results of this effort are expected to contribute to the development of soil erodibility modelling approaches for mountainous areas. In this study, we mapped soil erodibility at two sites, both representing grazing rangelands in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and having potentially different levels of grazing pressure. We collected a total of 232 soil samples evenly distributed in geographical space and feature space. Then we analyzed the samples in laboratory for grain size distribution and calculated soil erodibility values from these data using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) K-factor formula. After that, we derived different terrain indices and ratios of frequency bands from ASTER GDEM and LANDSAT images to use as auxiliary data because they are among the main soil forming factors and widely used for prediction of various soil properties. Soil erodibility was significantly correlated with channel network base level (geographically extrapolated altitude of water channels), remotely sensed indices of short-wave infrared spectral bands, exposition, and slope degree. We applied multiple regression analysis to predict soil erodibility from spatially explicit terrain and remotely sensed indices. The final soil erodibility model was developed using the spatially explicit predictors and the regression equation and then improved by adding the residuals. The spatial resolution of the model was 30 m, and the estimated mean adjusted coefficient of determination was 0.47. The bacterium Rhodococcus erythropolis MI2 uses 4,4´-dithiodibutyric acid(DTDB)as carbon source to synthesize polythioesters(PTE).The first step for the production of PTE using DTDB is catalyzed by an NADH:flavin oxidoreductase(nox)as it was previously shown in our laboratory,and the second step is catabolized by a putative luciferase-like monooxygenase(Llm).In the current study,experiments were carried out to identify the function of ***,the llm gene,which encodes for the Llm protein,was amplified from the genomic DNA of MI2 using polymerase chain reaction and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 *** purification was done using His Spin Trap affinity *** assay was carried out using the purified protein and p-coumaric acid as substrate giving a specific activity of 1.6 U/mg protein for the purified *** responsible gene(llm)was deleted in the genome of MI2,and a single deletion mutant was subsequently ***,growth of the wild-type strain(MI2)and the mutant strain(MI2Δllm)were compared using DTDB or succinate as carbon *** the wild type was successfully grown with DTDB or succinate,the llm-negative mutant exhibited low grow with DTDB although it grows very well with succinate.

Large abdominal cutaneous defects may occur in association with complex ventral hernias, trauma, tumor resection, necrotizing infections or septic evisceration. Soft tissue reconstruction of the abdominal wall is performed when there is insufficient adipocutaneous tissue to permit standard, primary closure. A number of reconstructive techniques are available, the choice of which is based on a number of factors, including the size and location of the defect, etiology, and timing of closure. In general, local fasciocutaneous advancement flaps and adjacent tissue rearrangement are the workhorse techniques, followed by regional myocutaneous flaps and free tissue transfers for the most complex and extensive of defects. Herein, we describe our approach to abdominal soft tissue reconstruction, indications, technical nuances, and management of complications.
