Mercury in an ultraoligotrophic North Patagonian Andean lake (Argentina): Concentration patterns in different components of the water column

The deep, ultraoligotrophic piedmont lakes of Northern Patagonia （Argentina） are located in pristine and barely impacted areas, along a wide latitudinal range. Several studies have reported moderate to high total mercury （Hg） concentrations and contrasting methylmercury （CH3Hg＋） production in different lake compartments. Sources of Hg for western Patagonian terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are still not clear; while point sources can be ruled out and atmospheric deposition is a plausible source, along with contribution from active volcanic areas of the Andes. In this investigation, we reported a noticeably seasonal, spatial （between lake branches）, and vertical （between water column strata） heterogeneity in the total Hg concentrations found in the pelagic zone of Lake Moreno. Sterile water samples taken in a depth profile of the lake showed moderate to high concentrations of CH3Hg＋ in autumn with a decreasing trend with depth. Our results indicated that Hg is largely allocated in the plankton fraction between 10–53 μm; which dominated within the euphotic （epilimnetic） zone of the lake due to the high densities attained by two species of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium. The 53–200 μm planktonic size fraction （comprising rotifers, ciliates and immature stages of crustaceans） and the 200 μm fraction （calanoid copepods and cladocerans） were found to bear strikingly lower total Hg concentrations, suggesting that the magnification of Hg at the planktonic consumer level is negligible.

BACKGROUND Blink and masseter reflexes provide reliable,quantifiable data on the function of the central nervous system:Delayed latencies have been found in patients with neurocognitive disorder(ND)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),but this has not been studied in patients with both *** To investigate if older adults with ND plus T2DM have prolonged latencies of blink and masseter-reflex and if they were associated with disease *** This cross-sectional study included 227 older adults(>60 years)from Colima,*** disorder was identified by a neuropsychological battery test,and T2DM identified by medical history,fasting glucose,and glycosylated *** in the early reflex(R1),ipsilateral late(R2),and contralateral late(R2c)components of the blink reflex were analyzed for all subjects,and 183 subjects were analyzed for latency of the masseter *** In 20.7%of participants,ND was *** 37%,T2DM was *** in R1,R2,and R2c were significantly prolonged for groups with ND plus T2DM,ND,and T2DM,compared with the control group(Possible changes in brainstem circuits in older adults with ND and T2DM.

Protective effects of Balanites aegyptiaca extract, melatonin and ursodeoxycholic acid against hepatotoxicity induced by methotrexate in male rats

Objective: To compare the degree of ameliorative effects of Melatonin(MEL), Ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) and Balanites aegyptiaca(BA) against hepatotoxicity induced by MTX for one month. Methods: Eighty adult male rats(Sprague Dawely) weighing(190±10g), were randomly divided into eight equal groups: Control, MTX, MEL, BA, UDCA, MTX+MEL, MTX+BA, MTX+UDCA. Liver function biomarker enzymes, liver tissue oxidative stress parameters, together with total antioxidant capacity and tumor necrosis factor(TNF-α) were determined. Histopathological and immunohistochemistry examinations for TNF-α were also done. Results: MTX showed significant increase in alanine transaminase(ALT), aspartate transaminase(AST), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase(GGT), total and direct bilirubin, as well as TNF-α levels, oxidized glutathione(GSSG), malodialdehyde(MDA) and nitric oxide(NO). whereas, total protein, albumin, total antioxidant capacity, reduced glutathione(GSH), glutathione peroxidase(GPx), glutathione reductase(GR), glutathione S-transferase(GST), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT) levels were significantly decreased in MTX treated group. These alterations were improved by MEL and BA treatment, whereas no improvement was noticed in UDCA treatment. Conclusions: BA may be as promising as MEL in the hepatoprotection against MTX toxicity through their antioxidant and radical scavenging activities. In addition, it is not recommended to co-administer UDCA with MTX as it enhanced inflammation and damage to the liver.

如果精神病是一种跨诊断的维度,精神病性症状的出现受动态变化的情境和情感因素左右,而后者又是可治疗的,那么目前精神科疾病的分类学和治疗研究的方法可能需要修改。迄今为此,无论在临床工作上还是在疾病概念上,占主导地位的方法是将精神病性症状置于精神分裂症的框架中。然而,终生患病率为1%的精神分裂症只代表了部分预后不佳的精神病谱系障碍,而后者发生更多,终生患病率为3.5%。因此,精神分裂症的研究结果可能反映了预后相关的机制,而非精神病和其他症状维度之间本质上的相关性。同样,常见的非精神病性精神障碍中高达30%的个体有阈下精神病性症状,他们会被归于精神病的跨诊断维度之下,这些精神症状还会影响临床严重程度和治疗有效性。上述发现也同样提示武断区分"精神病性"与"非精神病性"的做法妨碍了临床实践和研究。精神病学诊断手册可以借鉴跨诊断维度(包括精神病的跨诊断维度)的体系。引入跨诊断维度,则既能根据原则进行分类诊断(即疾病分组的特异性),又可结合个体特有的多维度综合评分(即个体特异性)。这样的益处在于促使人们思考在精神病理学中症状之间是如何动态地交互作用的,并思考社会环境是如何影响精神病理症状的。

Characterization of housing stock for energy retrofitting purposes in Spain

Energy saving in existing buildings is of vital *** this work,the characterization of housing stock in Spain for energy retrofitting purposes has been *** regulations in force when the existing stock was constructed(1980–2007)were considered to model the envelope and thermal systems of single-family and block *** energy consumption and CO_(2) emissions were estimated for each type of dwelling and location,ranging from 44.2 to 130.6 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(13.6–32 kg CO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for multi-family homes,and 85.5 to 213.5 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(17.1–45.2 kg CO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for single-family homes.A global picture of the energy performance and emissions for 13 different climate zones was obtained with a total of 504 *** of the envelope allowed the reduction of consumption and emissions from 37.7%to 58%,depending on the climate *** consumption per square meter in block housing was lower than in single-family housing;nevertheless,single-family houses responded more effectively to energy improvement ***,non-renewable primary energy savings seem a better indicator of the improvement by retrofitting than the energy *** building models designed in this work may serve as a reference for subsequent research concerning energy retrofitting and energy savings of housing stock.

Growing arugula plants using aeroponic culture with an automated irrigation system

The paper presents an efficient form of growing arugula plants by means of automatic control of an aeroponic culture irrigation *** system considers a reprogrammable electronic circuit that uses software to generate different irrigation cycles to obtain an adequate growth of arugula *** show how different samples grown in a greenhouse had the same growth behavior as field-grown samples during the test *** was possible to obtain a more efficient and sustained five-week production to supply consumers by having a continuous cycle irrigation system,which was operated for 35 *** growth and number of leaves were maintained in a similar way for different plants *** grow similarly,but some of them showed size differences during the five weeks.

How Can Manual Rotation Reduce Vacuum, Forceps and Caesarean Deliveries?—A Review of the Evidence

The aim of this review was to investigate whether manual rotation can be used to reduce vacuum, forceps and caesarean deliveries in women with occiput posterior or occiput transverse positions from 7 cm dilation in labour. A search strategy was developed and relevant papers published between 1946 and January 2015 were identified from electronic databases. Key search terms used were manual and digital rotation, labour presentation, obstetric labour complications, occiput posterior and version foetal. The search revealed 330 papers. A short list of 33 publications of possible relevance was compiled and assessed using the following criteria: primary studies on the effectiveness of manual rotation performed in women with singleton occiput posterior or occiput transverse presentations published in English or the Scandinavian languages. The quality of the included studies was evaluated by means of the critical appraisal tools for quantitative studies. Seven studies were included in the thematic analysis. The results varied but the main finding was that in order to decrease vacuum, forceps and caesarean deliveries by means of manual rotation, it is essential that the procedure is successful. The success rate of manual rotation is dependent on the experience of the healthcare professionals who perform the rotation procedure rather than the technique employed. Predictors of successful manual rotation were used after engagement of the foetal head, at full dilatation and prophylactic use before failure to progress in labour. In conclusion, although the results vary, there is a consensus in all the studies that manual rotation is worth considering and that it can contribute to decreasing vacuum, forceps and caesarean deliveries. The implications for practice are that successful manual rotation can reduce caesarean delivery and increase spontaneous vaginal delivery, but experience is necessary to perform successful rotations. This research explores the subject of territory,understood based on the life world of Andean inhabitants of the Colca Valley(Arequipa,Peru),who are descendants of ancient local Indigenous groups that,since prehistoric times,have known how to adapt to the rugged geographical reality of the *** a phenomenological approach,which assesses the subjective experience,it was possible to corroborate the existence of routine patterns of spatiality that preserve the emotional essence of past territorial conceptions,which have prevailed despite the hegemonic impositions systematically forced upon the land ever since the Spanish conquest in the 16th *** carrying out coexistence fieldwork in situ,five layers of territorial sense have been registered,which,besides being very useful in order to optimize and give coherence to their agricultural and animal husbandry tasks,are periodically represented through verbal and corporal narratives,which have been mapped in this work in order to make their dynamics of symbolization visible and to conclude in the existence of an emotional Andean territory.
