What role does access to diverse ideas play in economic growth?New forms of geo-located communications and economic data allow measurement of human interaction patterns and prediction of economic outcomes for individuals,communities,and nations at a fine granularity,with the strongest predictors of income,productivity,and growth being measures of diversity and frequency of physical interaction between communities(clusters of interaction).This finding provides both new investment opportunities and new methods of risk *** and use of these data raise privacy and security risks,and the final section of the paper describes how these challenges can be controlled.

BACKGROUND Amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded protein aggregated into insoluble *** involvement in systemic amyloidosis is common,but is often subclinical or presents as vague and nonspecific *** is rare for gastrointestinal symptoms to be the main presenting symptom in patients with systemic amyloidosis,causing it to be undiagnosed until late-stage *** SUMMARY A 53 year-old man with diarrhea,hematochezia,and weight loss presented to a community *** with biopsy at that time was suspicious for Crohn *** to worsening symptoms including nausea,vomiting,and a new petechial rash,an abdominal fat pad biopsy was *** biopsy showed papillary and adnexal dermal amyloid deposition,in a pattern usually seen with cutaneous ***,Cytokeratin 5/6 was negative,excluding cutaneous *** patterns of nodular amyloidosis,subcutaneous amyloid deposits and perivascular amyloid were not *** Acid-Schiff stain was negative for lipoid proteinosis,Congo red was positive for apple green birefringence on polarization and amyloid typing confirmed amyloid light chain *** endoscopic biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract showed amyloid deposition from the esophagus to the rectum,in a pattern usually seen in serum amyloid A in the setting of chronic inflammatory diseases,including severe inflammatory bowel *** marrow biopsy showed kappa-restricted plasma cell *** Described is an unusual presentation of primary systemic amyloidosis,highlighting the risk of misdiagnosis with subsequent significant organ dysfunction and high mortality.

This paper presents the development of an innovative standing support for underground *** main feature of this standing support is its exterior container,a combination of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)with large rupture strain and fibre-reinforced polymer(FRP)with high strength-to-weight *** demonstrate the advantages of this cementitious grout filled PVC-FRP tubular(PFT)standing support,a series of compression tests were *** variables included the strength of cementitious grout infill material and the thickness of FRP *** tests were also conducted on cementitious grout-filled PVC tubular(PT)support and cementitious grout-filled FRP tubular(FT)*** tests showed that PFT support presents a typical strain-hardening behaviour together with an outstanding axial deformation ability(>20%of the overall height of the support).In addition,the maximum compressive strength of PFT support is much higher than that of the corresponding PT support and FT ***,using thicker FRP jacket or high strength cementitious grout material can enhance the load carrying capacity of PFT *** comparative results indicated that the high performance of PFT support is mainly attributed to the combination of confining constituents(*** and FRP)and infill material.

Semen analysis is characterized by high levels of intra-and inter-laboratory variability,due to a low level of standardization,high subjectivity of the assessments,and problems with automated *** improve consistency of laboratory results,quality control and training of technicians are important *** goals of this study are to evaluate the results of an external quality control(EQC)program and standardized training by ESHRE Basic Semen Analysis Courses(BSAC)on the variability in manual assessments of semen *** performed retrospective analyses of(1)the interlaboratory variability in the Dutch EQC program and(2)the interobserver variability in BSACs for concentration,motility,and morphology *** data showed that the interlaboratory coefficient of variation(CV)for concentration assessment decreased(range from 24.0%–97.5%to 12.7%–20.9%)but not for morphology and motility *** variability was lower if improved Neubauer hemocytometers were *** assessment showed highest CVs(up to 375.0%),with many outliers in the period of 2007–*** BSAC,a significant reduction of interobserver variability could be established for all parameters(P<0.05).The absence of an effect in the EQC program for motility and morphology might be explained by respectively the facts that motility assessment was introduced relatively late in the EQC program(since 2013)and that criteria for morphology assessment changed in *** results might have been influenced by the pretraining level of participants and the influence of external *** EQC and training show positive effects on reducing *** willingness by laboratories to change their methods toward standards may lead to further improvements.

Recent reports suggest that exposure to stress is capable of influencing the frequency and pattern of inherited changes in various parts of the genome. In this review, we will discuss the influence of viral pathogens on somatic and meiotic genome stability of Nicotiana tabacum and Arabidopsis thaliana. Plants infected with a compatible pathogen generate a systemic recombination signal that precedes the spread of pathogens and results in changes in the somatic and meiotic recombination frequency. The progeny of infected plants exhibit changes in global and locusspecific DNA methylation patterns, genomic rearrangements at transgenic reporter loci and resistance gene-like-loci, and even tolerance to pathogen infection and abiotic stress. Here, we will discuss the contribution of environmental stresses to genome evolution and will focus on the role of heritable epigenetic changes in response to pathogen infection.

A transition from a large open pit into a novel “macroblock variant” block caving geometry at Chuquicamata mine, Codelco Chile

With a history of more than 100 years, Chuquicamata has become one of the largest open pits in the world. Its current depth of 1100 m, length of 4500 m and width of 3000 m, resulting in haulage distances of over 11,000 m from pit bottom to the processing plant or waste dumps, with waste/ore ratio greater than 4 and much lower grades, are effectively determining its profitable limit by the end of this decade. Currently, there are over 4300 Mt of geological resources containing 0.7% of copper and 340 ppm (1 ppm = 1 g/t) of molybdenum below the final pit shell. The corresponding orebody geometry is 3000 m northsouth, 300-800 m eastwest and the drilling campaign suggested the existence of more than 900 m of mineable ore from the final pit bottom. This is in spite of the fact that the Chuquicamata orebody is still open at depth. The business case to continue with the mining of the Chuquicamata orebody is to change from the current large open pit to a novel macroblock variant block caving geometry. This requires a production rate of 140,000 t/d (50 Mt per annum), with a continuous material handling system to achieve the 7-year ramp-up to full production. The resolution of a number of known technical, operational and logistical challenges outside current industry practises which Chuquicamata will face over its projected 40-year mine life is therefore essential. These challenges include simultaneous operations of open pit and underground macroblocks and from the initial lift to the second lift, rapid ramp-up and optimum sequencing of the planned macroblocks, early dilution from the west fault and late dilution from potential slope failures, and the potential for major operational hazards. An equally important issue to be addressed is cultural given that the mining history in the northern region of Chile, which includes Chuquicamata, is predominantly open pit.
