An Innovative Approach for Attribute Reduction in Rough Set Theory

The Rough Sets Theory is used in data mining with emphasis on the treatment of uncertain or vague information. In the case of classification, this theory implicitly calculates reducts of the full set of attributes, eliminating those that are redundant or meaningless. Such reducts may even serve as input to other classifiers other than Rough Sets. The typical high dimensionality of current databases precludes the use of greedy methods to find optimal or suboptimal reducts in the search space and requires the use of stochastic methods. In this context, the calculation of reducts is typically performed by a genetic algorithm, but other metaheuristics have been proposed with better performance. This work proposes the innovative use of two known metaheuristics for this calculation, the Variable Neighborhood Search, the Variable Neighborhood Descent, besides a third heuristic called Decrescent Cardinality Search. The last one is a new heuristic specifically proposed for reduct calculation. Considering some databases commonly found in the literature of the area, the reducts that have been obtained present lower cardinality, i.e., a lower number of attributes.

Biopolymer Sponge for High Grade Renal Trauma: An Experimental Study in Rabbits

Introduction: Acute blunt or open renal trauma sometimes requires conservative measure which involves the use of specific materials in order to adequately restore renal parenchima. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the sugar cane biopolymer sponge in an experimental model of renal trauma in rabbits. Methods: Experimental prospective study was paired with twelve New Zealand rabbits. After induction of renal trauma bilateral high-grade (grade 4-collecting system, according to AAST), the sugar cane biopolymer sponge was used for homeostasis and reconstruction of the right renal parenchyma (experimental group). The same procedure was performed in the left kidney, but using the Surgifoam? sponge (Control Group). The animals were sacrificed after four weeks. Histological analysis was performed and the results were compared after statistically being evaluated. Results: Comparing the experimental group with the control, there was more inflammatory reaction and premature adhesions in the first one. Concerning the influence on efficacy and biocompatibility of the biopolymer, no serious complications like massive bleeding, haematoma, fistula or urinary stone formation were found in both groups. Conclusion: The sugar cane biopolymer sponge demonstrated good efficacy in relation to hemostatic control and reconstruction of the renal parenchyma without major complications. Future studies may direct its routine use in urologic practice.

Objective: To evaluate the association of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and risk factors with occurrence of pressure ulcers in institutionalized elderly people. Method: This cross-sectional, analytical study, in quantitative approach, performed from the database analysis linked to the project “Pressure Ulcer in institutionalized elderly people: Association of incidence with the risk factors to functional and nutritional assessment” developed in six long-stay institutions for the elderly people in João pessoa. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Associations were made through chi square test and Odds Ratio. Results: The clinical conditions of significant associations with the occurrence of pressure ulcers were the variables neurological disorders (p = 0.011) and visual impairment (p = 0.005). As for risk factors, the most important was fecal incontinence (p Conclusion: The analysis of the associations pointed out problems that require intervention in order to prevent health implications of the elderly people and to minimize the risk and occurrence of this injury.
