Like many countries,Canada's building code includes a performance compliance path that compares the energy use of a proposed design to that of a reference ***,provinces across Canada are contemplating an alternative absolute energy use intensity ***,the effect of adopting the absolute approach on house design is not well *** study first developed a proof-of-concept methodology for a technical simulation-based comparison of the two ***,it performed a comparative analysis between the design outcomes of the two approaches using the developed *** this end,statistically representative archetypes were configured to comply with the prescriptive requirements of the building *** characteristics of each archetype were then varied through parametric study,and the resulting energy performance under the absolute and comparative approaches were *** results of this study indicated that the two approaches had different effects on the design and energy use of houses in heating-dominated climate *** performing better under the absolute approach consumed less energy and exhibited more compact architectural *** houses were also less sensitive to improvements in airtightness and envelope than houses performing better under the comparative *** results suggest that adopting the absolute approach based on the energy use intensity metric in building codes would encourage design and construction of houses with higher energy efficiency.

This paper presents the development of an innovative standing support for underground *** main feature of this standing support is its exterior container,a combination of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)with large rupture strain and fibre-reinforced polymer(FRP)with high strength-to-weight *** demonstrate the advantages of this cementitious grout filled PVC-FRP tubular(PFT)standing support,a series of compression tests were *** variables included the strength of cementitious grout infill material and the thickness of FRP *** tests were also conducted on cementitious grout-filled PVC tubular(PT)support and cementitious grout-filled FRP tubular(FT)*** tests showed that PFT support presents a typical strain-hardening behaviour together with an outstanding axial deformation ability(>20%of the overall height of the support).In addition,the maximum compressive strength of PFT support is much higher than that of the corresponding PT support and FT ***,using thicker FRP jacket or high strength cementitious grout material can enhance the load carrying capacity of PFT *** comparative results indicated that the high performance of PFT support is mainly attributed to the combination of confining constituents(*** and FRP)and infill material.

With a history of more than 100 years, Chuquicamata has become one of the largest open pits in the world. Its current depth of 1100 m, length of 4500 m and width of 3000 m, resulting in haulage distances of over 11,000 m from pit bottom to the processing plant or waste dumps, with waste/ore ratio greater than 4 and much lower grades, are effectively determining its profitable limit by the end of this decade. Currently, there are over 4300 Mt of geological resources containing 0.7% of copper and 340 ppm (1 ppm = 1 g/t) of molybdenum below the final pit shell. The corresponding orebody geometry is 3000 m northsouth, 300-800 m eastwest and the drilling campaign suggested the existence of more than 900 m of mineable ore from the final pit bottom. This is in spite of the fact that the Chuquicamata orebody is still open at depth. The business case to continue with the mining of the Chuquicamata orebody is to change from the current large open pit to a novel macroblock variant block caving geometry. This requires a production rate of 140,000 t/d (50 Mt per annum), with a continuous material handling system to achieve the 7-year ramp-up to full production. The resolution of a number of known technical, operational and logistical challenges outside current industry practises which Chuquicamata will face over its projected 40-year mine life is therefore essential. These challenges include simultaneous operations of open pit and underground macroblocks and from the initial lift to the second lift, rapid ramp-up and optimum sequencing of the planned macroblocks, early dilution from the west fault and late dilution from potential slope failures, and the potential for major operational hazards. An equally important issue to be addressed is cultural given that the mining history in the northern region of Chile, which includes Chuquicamata, is predominantly open pit. Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis is an important medicinal plant with abundant saponins that are widely used in the pharmaceuticals industry. It is unclear why the levels of active ingredients increase as these plants age. We speculated that the concentrations of those components in the rhizomes are mediated by fungal endophytes. To test this hypothesis, we took both culture-dependent and-independent(metagenomics) approaches to analyze the communities of endophytic fungi that inhabit those rhizomes in plants of different age classes(four, six, and eight years old). In all, 147 isolates representing 18 fungal taxa were obtained from 270 segments(90 per age class). Based on morphological and genetic characteristics, Fusarium oxysporum(46.55% frequency of occurrence) was the predominant endophyte,followed by Leptodontidium sp.(8.66%) and Trichoderma viride(6.81%). Colonization of endophytic fungi was maximized in the eight-year-old rhizomes(33.33%) when compared with four-year-old(21.21%) and six-year-old(15.15%) rhizomes. Certain fungal species were present only at particular ages. For example,Alternaria sp., Cylindrocarpon sp., Chaetomium sp., Paraphaeosphaeria sporulosa, Pyrenochaeta sp., Penicillium swiecickii, T. viride, and Truncatella angustata were found only in the oldest plants. Analysis of(metagenomics) community DNA extracted from different-aged samples revealed that, at the class level,the majority of fungi had the highest sequence similarity to members of Sordariomycetes, followed by Eurotiomycetes and Saccharomycetes. These results were mostly in accord with those we obtained using culture methods. Fungal diversity and richness also changed over time. Our investigation is the first to show that the diversity of fungi in rhizomes of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis is altered as plants age, and our findings provide a foundation for future examinations of useful compounds.

Turbulent ship wake conservation at a long distance is among unsolved problems at present. It is well known that far wakes have a vortical structure and slowly expand with distance. As was obtained by Dubrovin et al., slow expansion of the wake may be related to the distribution of turbulent viscosity in it. In our work we study the effect of helicity in the wake on the behavior of turbulent viscosity. Taking into account the helical nature of the wake, we can clarify the difference between turbulence inside and outside the wake on the one hand and slowing down of its expansion with time on the other hand.

AIM: To test the hypothesis that production of superoxide in mesenteric resistance arteries is increased and con- tributes to the development of hypertension induced by sensory denervation plus high salt intake. METHODS: Newborn Wistar rats were given capsaicin 50 mg/kg sc on the 1st and 2nd d of life. After weaning, male rats were grouped as follows and treated for 3 weeks with: capsaicin pretreatment plus normal sodium diet (0.5 %, CAP-NS), CAP plus high sodium diet (4 %, CAP-HS), control plus NS (CON-NS), or CON-HS. Both tail-cuff systolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured in each of the groups. Western blot analysis was used for measurement of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the mesenteric resistance arteries. Lucigenin chemiluminescence assay was used for superoxide production in the mesenteric resistance arteries. The Griess method was used for measurement of nitrite/nitrate levels in plasma. RESULTS: Both tail-cuff pressure and MAP were higher in CAP-HS compared with CAP-NS, CON-HS, and CON- NS rats (P<0.05). Both MnSOD and eNOS in the mesenteric resistance arteries were increased in CAP-HS compared with CAP-NS, CON-HS, and CON-NS (P<0.05). However, nitrite/nitrate levels in plasma were not different among 4 groups. Acute iv administration of tempol, a membrane-permeable superoxide scavenger, de- creased MAP in both CAP-HS and CON-HS when compared with their respective controls. However, the de- creases of MAP between these two groups were not different. Chronic treatment with tempol failed to prevent the development of hypertension in CAP-HS rats. Superoxideproduction in the mesenteric resistance arteries was increased in CAP-HS compared with CAP-NS, CON-HS, and CON-NS (P<0.05). However, chronic treatment with tempol did not prevent the increase of mesenteric superoxideproduction in CAP-HS rats. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of increased vascular MnSOD levels, salt
