Undoped nickel-based catalysts supported on depleted uranium oxide allow one to carry out CO_(2)methanation process under extremely low reaction temperature under atmospheric pressure and powered by a contactless induction heating.By adjusting the reaction conditions,the catalyst is able to perform CO_(2)methanation reaction under autothermal process operated inside a non-adiabatic reactor,without any external energy supply.Such autothermal process is possible thanks to the high apparent density of the UO_x which allows one to confine the reaction heat in a small catalyst volume in order to confine the exothermicity of the reaction inside the catalyst and to operate the reaction at equilibrium heat in-heat out.Such autothermal operation mode allows one to significantly reduce the complexity of the process compared to that operated using adiabatic reactor,where complete insulation is required to prevent heat disequilibrium,in order to reduce as much as possible,the heat exchange with the external medium.The catalyst displays an extremely high stability as a function of time on stream as no apparent deactivation.It is expected that such new catalyst with unprecedented catalytic performance could open new era in the field of heterogeneous catalysis where traditional supports show their limitations to operate catalytic processes under severe reaction conditions.

The extent of male mate choosiness is driven by a trade-off between various environmental factors associated with the costs of mate acquisition,quality assessment and opportunity costs.Our knowledge about natural variation in male mate choosiness across different populations of the same species,however,remains limited.In this study,we compared male mate choosiness across 10 natural populations of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeselii(Gervais 1835),a species with overall high male mating investments,and evaluated the relative influence of population density and sex ratio(both affecting mate availability)on male mate choosiness.We investigated amplexus establishment after separating mating pairs and presenting focal males with a novel,size-matched female from the same population.Our analysis revealed considerable effects of sex ratio and(to a lesser extent)population density on time until amplexus establishment(choosiness).Male amphipods are able to perceive variable social conditions(e.g.,sex ratio)and modify their mating strategy accordingly:We found choosiness to be reduced in increasingly male-biased populations,whereas selectivity increases when sex ratio becomes female biased.With this,our study expands our limited knowledge on natural variations in male mate choosiness and illustrates the importance of sex ratio(i.e.,level of competition)for male mating decisions in natural environments.Accounting for variation in sex ratios,therefore,allows envisioning a distinctive variation of choosiness in natural populations and highlights the importance of considering social background information in future behavioral studies.

Benchmark for scale-resolving simulation with curved walls: the Taylor Couette flow

Flow between rotating concentric cylinders,or the Taylor Couette flow,has been studied extensively because of its rich physics,ranging from axisymmetric steady laminar flow,to fully developed turbulent flow.In the present study,we advocate the use of this problem as a benchmark case for scale-resolving simulation,such as large eddy simulation(LES)and direct numerical simulation(DNS).The problem is attractive because of its simple geometry,simple boundary conditions,and complex physics involving wall-shear induced and centrifugal instability.Unlike the wellknown fully developed channel flow,this problem has a curved wall boundary,and it is unnecessary to add a source term to the governing equations to sustain the fully developed turbulent flow.A p-refinement study for Re=4000 is performed first to establish DNS data,including the time history of enstrophy,which can be used as an accuracy and resolution indicator to evaluate numerical methods,and is orders of magnitude faster than using the mean flow quantities and Reynolds stresses to evaluate solution quality.Finally,an hp-refinement study is performed to establish the relative accuracy and efficiency of high-order schemes of various accuracy.

Very-high-frequency probes for atomic force microscopy with silicon optomechanics

Atomic force microscopy(AFM)has been consistently supporting nanosciences and nanotechnologies for over 30 years and is used in many fields from condensed matter physics to biology.It enables the measurement of very weak forces at the nanoscale,thus elucidating the interactions at play in fundamental processes.Here,we leverage the combined benefits of micro/nanoelectromechanical systems and cavity optomechanics to fabricate a sensor for dynamic mode AFM at a frequency above 100 MHz.This frequency is two decades above the fastest commercial AFM probes,suggesting an opportunity for measuring forces at timescales unexplored thus far.The fabrication is achieved using very-large-scale integration technologies derived from photonic silicon circuits.The probe's optomechanical ring cavity is coupled to a 1.55 pm laser light and features a 130 MHz mechanical resonance mode with a quality factor of 900 in air.A limit of detection in the displacement of 3×10^(-16)m/VHz is obtained,enabling the detection of the Brownian motion of the probe and paving the way for force sensing experiments in the dynamic mode with a working vibration amplitude in the picometer range.When inserted in a custom AFM instrument embodiment,this optomechanical sensor demonstrates the capacity to perform force-distance measurements and to maintain a constant interaction strength between the tip and sample,an essential requirement for AFM applications.Experiments indeed show a stable closed-loop operation with a setpoint of 4 nN/nm for an unprecedented subpicometer vibration amplitude,where the tip-sample interaction is mediated by a stretched water meniscus.

The“Bitcoin Generator”Scam

The“Bitcoin Generator Scam”(BGS)is a cyberattack in which scammers promise to provide victims with free cryptocurrencies in exchange for a small mining fee.In this paper,we present a data-driven system to detect,track,and analyze the BGS.It works as follows:we first formulate search queries related to BGS and use search engines to find potential instances of the scam.We then use a crawler to access these pages and a classifier to differentiate actual scam instances from benign pages.Last,we automatically monitor the BGS instances to extract the cryptocurrency addresses used in the scam.A unique feature of our system is that it proactively searches for and detects the scam pages.Thus,we can find addresses that have not yet received any transactions.Our data collection project spanned 16 months,from November 2019 to February 2021.We uncovered more than 8,000 cryptocurrency addresses directly associated with the scam,hosted on over 1,000 domains.Overall,these addresses have received around 8.7 million USD,with an average of 49.24 USD per transaction.Over 70%of the active addresses that we are capturing are detected before they receive any transactions,that is,before anyone is victimized.We also present some post-processing analysis of the dataset that we have captured to aggregate attacks that can be reasonably confidently linked to the same attacker or group.Our system is one of the first academic feeds to the APWG eCrime Exchange database.It has been actively and automatically feeding the database since November 2020.

^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar ages of seamount trachytes from the South China Sea and implications for the evolution of the northwestern sub-basin

A chronological study of seamount rocks in the South China Sea basin provides a great opportunity to understand the expansion and evolution history of the sea basin. In this paper, we analyzed the ^40Ar/^39Ar age of trachytic samples collected from the Shuangfeng seamounts in the northwestern sub-basin of the South China Sea. The two samples yielded plateau ages of 23.80 ± 0.18 and 23.29 ± 0.22 Ma, respectively, which indicate magmatic activity in late Oligocene which helpful constraints the expansion time of the northwest sub-basin. Previous studies suggested that the northwestern sub-basin and southwestern sub-basin have experienced a relatively consistent expansion in the NW-SE direction followed by a late expansion of the eastern sub-basin. We concluded that the expansion of the northwestern sub-basin began prior to ca. 24 Ma, which also implicated magmatic events of a late or stop expansion of the northwestern sub-basin combined with our results of^40Ar/^39Ar age data and previous geophysical data.

In the late 1980s the first laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed prompting a sudden rise in technological innovations as the benefits and feasibility of minimal access surgery became recognised.Monocular laparoscopes provided only two-dimensional(2D) viewing with reduced depth perception and contributed to an extended learning curve.Attention turned to producing a usable three-dimensional(3D) endoscopic view for surgeons;utilising different technologies for image capture and image projection.These evolving visual systems have been assessed in various research environments with conflicting outcomes of success and usability,and no overall consensus to their benefit.This review article aims to provide an explanation of the different types of technologies,summarise the published literature evaluating 3D vs 2D laparoscopy,to explain the conflicting outcomes,and discuss the current consensus view.

Determinants of Commercial Performance in the Sector of Selective Distribution of Cosmetics Worldwide:Impact of the Nature and Age of the Retail Brand,and of the Number of Stores

The academic literature has focused more on the competitive performance of retail brands than on their commercial performance per se and its antecedents.Our research study examines the factors that impact commercial performance by addressing two questions:does the commercial performance of a cosmetic retail brand depend on the country in which it operates(where I am?)or does it depend on the nature of the circuit(who I am?).Finally,our explanatory model of the penetration and market share comprises four factors:the type of store,the geographical area,the percentage of stores owned by the brand,and the time elapsed since the launch of the brand.The choice of these factors is relevant as evidenced by the strong predictive validity and explanatory power of the model.The model reveals a significant effect of the factors and their interactions.
