Enigmatic origin of hepatitis B virus:An ancient travelling companion or a recent encounter?

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)is the leading cause of liver disease and infects an estimated 240 million people *** is characterised by a high degree of genetic heterogeneity because of the use of a reverse transcriptase during viral *** ten genotypes(A-J)that have been described so far further segregate into a number of subgenotypes which have distinct ethno-geographic *** A and D are ubiquitous and the most prevalent genotypes in Europe(mainly represented by subgenotypes D1-3 and A2);genotypes B and C are restricted to eastern Asia and Oceania;genotype E to central and western Africa;and genotypes H and F(classified into 4 subgenotypes)to Latin America and *** review summarises the data obtained by studying the global phylodynamics and phylogeography of HBV genotypes,particularly those concerning the origin and dispersion histories of genotypes A,D,E and F and their *** lack of any consensus concerning the HBV substitution rate and the conflicting data obtained using different calibration approaches make the time of origin and divergence of the various genotypes and subgenotypes largely *** is hypothesised that HBV evolutionary rates are time dependent,and that the changes depend on the main transmission routes of the genotypes and the dynamics of the infected populations.

Twin-Wire Networks for Zero Interconnect,High-Density 4-Wire Electrical Characterizations of Materials

Four-wire measurements have been introduced by lord Kelvin in 1861 and have since become the standard technique for characterizing small resistances and ***,high-density 4-wire measurements are generally complex,time-consuming,and inefficient because of constraints on interconnects,pads,external wires,and mechanical contacts,thus reducing reproducibility,statistical significance,and throu ***,we introduce,systematically design,analyze,and experimentally validate zero interconnect networks interfaced to external instrumentation by couples of twin wire.3D-printed holders with magnets,interconnects,nonadhesive layers,and spacers can effortlessly establish excellent electrical connections with tunable or minimum contact forces and enable accurate measurements even for delicate devices,such as thin metals on soft *** an example,we measured all the resistances of a twin-wire 29-resistor network made of silver-nanoparticle ink printed on polyimide,paper,or photo paper,including during sintering or temperature calibration,resulting in anunprecedentedly easy and accurate characterization of both resistivity and its temperature *** theoretical framework and experimental strategies reported here represent a breakthrough toward zero interconnect,simple,and efficient high-density 4-wire characterizations,can be generalized to other 4-wire measurements(impedances,sensors)and can open the way to more statistically meaningful and reproducible analyses of materials,high-throughput measurements,and minimally invasive characterizations of biomaterials.

The phylogenetic and evolutionary history of Kokobera virus

Objective: To estimate the genetic diversity of Kokobera virus, the date of origin and the spread among different viruses in the endemic regions of Australia. Methods: Two datasets were built. The first consisting of 29 sequences of the NS5/3' UTR region of Kokobera group downloaded from Gen Bank, the second including only 24 sequences of Kokobera viruses, focus is on this group. Results: Bayesian time analysis revealed two different entries in Australia of Kokobera virus in the 50 s years with the dated ancestor in 1861 year. Clade A and B showed a clear separation of the Kokobera sequences according to the geographic region. Conclusions: Data from the study showed as Kokobera virus, despite of its ancient origin and its circulation before the European colonization, remained limited to the Australian Country and nowadays limited mostly to the regions were Australian marsupials are mostly found.

From trees to fleas: masting indirectly affects flea abundance on a rodent host

Mast seeding causes strongﬂuctuations in populations of forest ***,this phenomenon can be used as a natural experiment to examine how variation in host abundance affects parasite *** investigatedﬂeas infesting yellow-necked mice in beech forest after 2 mast and 2 non-mast *** tested 2 mutually exclusive scenarios:(1)as predicted by classical models of density-dependent transmission,an increase in host density will cause an increase in ectoparasite abundance(deﬁned as the number of parasites per host),versus(2)an increase in host density will cause a decline inﬂea abundance(“dilution,”which is thought to occur when parasite population growth is slower than that of the host).In addition,we assessed whether masting alters the relationship between host traits(sex and body mass)andﬂea *** found a hump-shaped relationship between host andﬂea ***,the most basic predictions are too simple to describe ectoparasite dynamics in this *** addition,masting modiﬁed seasonal dynamics ofﬂea abundance,but did not affect the relationship between host traits andﬂea abundance(individuals with the highest body mass hosted the mostﬂeas;after controlling for body mass,parasite abundance did not vary between sexes).Our results demonstrate that pulses of tree reproduction can indirectly,through changes in host densities,drive patterns of ectoparasite infestation.

Activity of Tagetes minuta Linnaeus(Asteraceae)essential oil against L3 Anisakis larvae type 1

Objective:To evaluate in vitro effects of Tagetes minuta L. essential oil(TEO) on L3 Anisakis larvae type 1. Methods:In order to evaluate the potential use of Tagetes minuta essential oil against L3 Anisakis larvae three different media were tested:1) a saline solution(SS); 2) an industrial marinating solution; 3) sunflower seeds oil(SO). For each media and concentrations of TEO(0.1%,0.5%,1.0% and 5.0% v/v),20 parasites were introduced into plastic Petri dishes(diameter 90 mm) and maintained at room temperature. As controls,larvae were maintained without TEO under identical experimental conditions in SS,MS and SO. A total of 900 larvae were tested. The normalized mean viability,LT100,LT50 and the percentage of inactivation at 24 hours were calculated. Results:In vitro tests revealed a complete inactivation of parasites in saline solution after 2 hours with 5% and 1% of TEO. In marinating solution,a complete inactivation of parasites was observed after 4 hours at all concentrations used. A slower activity for all TEO concentration was reported in SO. Conclusions:The results obtained,showing a strong activity against Anisakis larvae,confirm TEO as a larvicidal agent in the treatment of human anisakidosis and in the industrial marinating process.
