Assessing n-type organic materials for lithium batteries:A techno-economic review

The high demand for critical minerals such as lithium,copper,nickel,and cobalt,required for lithium-ion batteries,has raised questions regarding the feasibility of maintaining a steady and affordable supply of raw materials for their *** the last years,researchers have shifted their attention toward organic materials,which are potentially more widely available,affordable,and sustainable due to the ubiquitous presence of the constituent organic *** n-type materials have a redox mechanism analogous to that of lithium-ion cathodes and anodes,hence they are suitable for a meaningful comparison with the state-of-the-art *** many reviews have evaluated the properties of organic materials at the material or electrode level,herein,the properties of n-type organic materials are assessed in a complex system,such as a full battery,to evaluate the feasibility and performance of these materials in commercial-scale battery *** most relevant cathode materials for organic batteries are reviewed,and a detailed cost and performance analysis of n-type material-based battery packs using the BatPaC 5.0 software is *** analysis considers the influence of electrode design choices,such as the conductive carbon content,active material mass loading,and electrode density,on energy density and *** potential of n-type organic materials as a low-cost and sustainable solution for energy storage applications is highlighted,while emphasizing the need for further advancements of organic materials for energy storage applications.

The large negative permittivity of noble metals in the infrared region prevents the possibility of highly confined plasmons in simple waveguide structures such as thin films or rods. This is a critical obstacle to applications of nonlinear plasmonics in the telecommunication wavelength region. We theoretically propose and numerically demonstrate that such limitation can be overcome by exploiting inter-element coupling effects in a plasmonic waveguide array. The supermodes of a plasmonic array span a large range of effective indices, making these structures ideal for broadband mode-multiplexed interconnects for integrated photonic devices. We show such plasmonic waveguide arrays can significantly enhance nonlinear optical interactions when operating in a high-index, tightly bound supermode. For example, a third-order nonlinear coeffident in such a waveguide can be more than three orders of magnitude larger compared to silicon waveguides of similar dimensions. These findings open new design possibilities towards the application of plasmonics in integrated optical devices in the telecommunications spectral region.

The restoration of the former PireUi Tower in Milan, which dates back to the early 1950s, is an example of various issues in approaching the ＂conservation of the new＂. This project was completed with the broad use of industrial products that evoked different kinds of reflections, if only within the same planning methodology, common to all interventions of architectural restoration. This restoration constitutes an exemplary episode where only a careful and critical evaluation facilitated the understanding of which elements are important in conservation and which can be substituted or updated. This approach uses case-to-case evaluations. The conservation of ＂new＂ architecture is similar to other restoration problems, except for the closeness in time to the original works and, sometimes, with its creator. The main intervention concerns the recovery of the structure with over 10,000 m^2 of continuous aluminum and glass facade in a skyscraper designed by Italian master Gio Ponti and the repair of the damage to the reinforced concrete （RC） structures （designed by another Italian master, Pier Luigi Nervi） caused by a plane crash. The straightening and repair of the RC using entirely innovative methods and the conservation of the structures of the whole fasade also translates into financial savings. Approximately 20% of the savings is derived from the complete substitution of the curtain wall. This idea of authenticity results in a method of restoration in which all single parts may not always be replaced for every functional upgrade. This scenario is important news, especially for modern architecture that usually prefers the value of what appears to be new, showing parts that are always perfect since the time they were built. People also consider the conservation of items that were considered as merely industrial products a few years ago.

The aim of this work is to develop a robust control strategy able to drive the attitude of a spacecraft to a reference value,despite the presence of unknown but bounded uncertainties in the system parameters and external *** to the use of an extended observer design,the proposed control law is robust against all the uncertainties that affect the high-frequency gain matrix,which is shown to capture a broad spectrum of modelling issues,some of which are often neglected by traditional *** proposed controller then provides robustness against parametric uncertainties,as moment of inertia estimation,payload deformations,actuator faults and external disturbances,while maintaining its asymptotic properties.

Plants often encounter light intensities exceeding the capacity of photosynthesis(excessive light)mainly due to biotic and abiotic factors,which lower C02 fixation and reduce light energy *** excessive light,the photosynthetic electron transport chain generates damaging molecules,hence leading to photooxidative stress and eventually to cell *** this review,we summarize the mechanisms linking the excessive absorption of light energy in chloroplasts to programmed cell death in plant *** highlight the importance of reactive carbonyl species generated by lipid photooxidation,their detoxification,and the integrating role of the endoplasmic reticulum in the adoption of phototolerance or cell-death ***,we invite the scientific community to standardize the conditions of excessive light treatments.

Systems that exhibit complex behaviours are often found in a particular dynamical con- dition, poised between order and disorder. This observation is at the core of the so-called criticality hypothesis, which states that systems in a dynamical regime between order and disorder attain the highest level of computational capabilities and achieve an optimal trade-off between robustness and flexibility. Recent results in cellular and evolutionary biology, ueuroscience and computer science have revitalised the interest in the criticality hypothesis, emphasising its role as a viable candidate general law in adaptive complex systems. This paper provides an overview of the works on dynamical criticality that are -- To the best of our knowledge -- Particularly relevant for the criticality hypothesis. The authors review the main contributions concerning dynamics and information processing at the edge of chaos, and illustrate the main achievements in the study of critical dynamics in biological systems. Finally, the authors discuss open questions and propose an agenda for future work.

Structural health monitoring of asphalt pavements using smart sensor networks: A comprehensive review

Early, effective and continuous monitoring allows to reduce costs and to extend life of road infrastructure. For this reason, over the years, more and more efforts have been made to implement more advanced and effective monitoring systems at ever more contained costs,going from impractical manual and destructive methods through automated in vehicle equipment to the most recent wireless sensor network(WSN) embedded into the pavement. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date critical literature review of wireless sensor networks for pavement health monitoring, considering, also,the experience gained for wired sensor as fundamental point of reference. This work presents both the methodology used to collect and analyse the current bibliography and provides a description and comments fundamental characteristics of wireless sensor networks for pavement monitoring for damage detection purposes, among which energy supply, the detection method, the hardware and network architecture and the performance validation procedures. A brief analysis of other possible complementary applications of smart sensor networks, such as traffic and surface condition monitoring, is provided. Finally, a comment is provided on the gaps and possible directions that future research could follow to allow the extensive use of wireless sensor networks for pavement health condition monitoring.

Spectral and fragility evaluations of retrofitted structures through strength reduction and enhanced damping

A retrofit procedure for existing buildings called the ＂weakening and damping technique＂（WED） is presented in this paper. Weakening of structures can limit the maximum response accelerations during severe ground motions, but leads to an increase in the displacements or inter-story drifts. Added damping by using viscous dampers, on the other hand, reduces the inter-story drifts and has no significant effect on total accelerations, when structures behave inelastically. The weakening and damping technique addresses the two main causes for both structural and nonstructural damage in structures. The weakening retrofit is particularly suitable for structures that have overstressed components and weak brittle components. In this paper, the advantages of the WeD are verified by nonlinear dynamic analysis and simplified spectral approach that has been modified to fit structures with additional damping devices. A hospital structure located in the San Fernando Valley in California is selected as a case study. The results from both analyses show that the retrofit solution is feasible to reduce both structural acceleration and displacement. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the retrofitting method using different combinations of performance thresholds in accelerations and displacements through fragility analysis.
