Facial expression recognition is one'of the most active areas of research in computer vision since one of the non-verbal communication methods by which one understands the lnood/mental state of a person is the expression of ***,it has been used in various fields such as human-robot interaction,security,computer graphics animation,and ambient ***,it remains a challenging task since existing approaches lack generalizability and almost all studies ignore the effects of facial attributes,such as *** expression recognition even though the research indicates that facial expression inanifestation varies with ***,a lot of progress has been made in this topic and great improvements in classification task were achieved with the emergence of deep learning *** approaches have sliown how hierarchies of features can be directly learned from original data,thus avoiding classical hand designed feature extraction methods that generally rely on manual operations witli labelled ***,research papers systematically exploring tlu4 performance of existing deep architectures for the task of classifying expression of ageing adults are absent in the *** the present work a tentative to try this gap is done considering the performance of three recent deep convolutiorial neural networks models(VGG-16,AlexNet and GoogLeNet/Inception V1)and evaluating it on four different benchmark datcisets(FACES,Lifespan,CIFE,and FER2013)which also contain facial expressions performed by elderly *** the baseline,and with the aim of making a comparison,two traditional inacliine learning approaches based on handcrafted features extraction process are evaluated on the same *** out an exhaustive and rigorous experimentation focused on the concept of "transfer learning",which consists of replacing the output level of the deep architectures considered with new output levels appropriate to the number of classes(facial expressions),

The attitude regulation problem with bounded control for a class of satellites in the presence of large disturbances,with bounded moving average,is solved using a Lyapunov-like *** analysis and design approaches are introduced in the case in which the underlying system is an integrator and are then applied to the satellite attitude regulation *** performance of the resulting closed-loop systems are studied in detail and it is shown that trajectories are ultimately bounded despite the effect of the persistent *** results on a model of a small satellite subject to large,but bounded in moving average,disturbances are presented.

Comparing leaf area index estimates in a Mediterranean forest using field measurements, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 data

Background Leaf area index(LAI)is a key indicator for the assessment of the canopy’s processes such as net primary production and *** this reason,the LAI is often used as a key input parameter in ecosystem services’modeling,which is emerging as a critical tool for steering upcoming urban reforestation ***,LAI field measures are extremely time-consuming and require remarkable economic and human *** this context,spectral indices computed using high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery like Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8,may represent a feasible and economic solution for estimating the LAI at the city ***,as far as we know,only a few studies have assessed the potential of Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data doing so in Mediterranean forest *** fill such a gap,we assessed the performance of 10 spectral indices derived from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data in estimating the LAI,using field measurements collected with the LI-COR LAI 2200c as a *** hypothesized that Sentinel-2 data,owing to their finer spatial and spectral resolution,perform better in estimating vegetation’s structural parameters compared to Landsat *** We found that Landsat 8-derived models have,on average,a slightly better performance,with the best model(the one based on NDVI)showing an R^(2) of 0.55 and NRMSE of 14.74%,compared to R^(2) of 0.52 and NRMSE of 15.15%showed by the best Sentinel-2 model,which is based on the *** models were affected by spectrum saturation for high LAI values(e.g.,above 5).Conclusion In Mediterranean ecosystems,Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data produce moderately accurate LAI estimates during the peak of the growing ***,the uncertainty introduced using satellite-derived LAI in ecosystem services’assessments should be systematically accounted for.

Vibration suppression of speed-controlled robots with nonlinear control

In this paper, a simple nonlinear control strategy for the simultaneous position tracking and vibration damping of robots is presented. The control is developed for devices actuated by speed-controlled servo drives. The conditions for the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system are derived by ensuring its passivity. The capability of achieving improved trajectory tracking and vibration suppression is shown through experimental tests conducted on a three-axis Cartesian robot. The control is aimed to be compatible with most industrial applications given the simplicity of implementation, the reduced computational requirements, and the use of joint position as the only measured signal.

Mechanics of tubular helical assemblies:ensemble response to axial compression and extension

Nature and technology often adopt structures that can be described as tubular helical ***,the role and mechanisms of these structures remain *** this paper,we study the mechanical response under compression and extension of a tubular assembly composed of 8 helical Kirchholf rods,arranged in pairs with opposite chirality and connected by pin joints,both analytically and *** first focus on compression and find that,whereas a single helical rod would buckle,the rods of the assembly deform coherently as stable helical shapes wound around a common ***,we investigate the response of the assembly under different boundary conditions,highlighting the emergence of a central region where rods remain circular ***,we study the effects of different hypotheses on the elastic properties of rods,i.e.,stress-free rods when straight versus when circular helices,Kirchhoff’s rod model versus Sadowsky’s ribbon *** up,our findings highlight the key role of mutual interactions in generating a stable ensemble response that preserves the helical shape of the individual rods,as well as some interesting features,and they shed some light on the reasons why helical shapes in tubular assemblies are so common and persistent in nature and technology.

Assessment of Cognitive skills via Human-robot Interaction and Cloud Computing

Technological advances are increasing the range of applications for artificial intelligence, especially through its embodiment within humanoid robotics platforms. This promotes the development of novel systems for automated screening of neurological conditions to assist the clinical practitioners in the detection of early signs of mild cognitive impairments. This article presents the implementation and the experimental validation of the first robotic system for cognitive assessment, based on one of the most popular platforms for social robotics, Softbank "Pepper", which administers and records a set of multi-modal interactive tasks to engage the user cognitive abilities. The robot intelligence is programmed using the state-of-the-art IBM Watson AI Cloud services, which provide the necessary capabilities for improving the social interaction and scoring the tests. The system has been tested by healthy adults (N= 35) and we found a significant correlation between the automated scoring and one of the most widely used Paper-and-Pencil tests. We conclude that the system can be considered as a screening instrument for cognitive assessment.

Optical absorption of （Ag-Au）133（SCH3）52 bimetallic monolayer-protected clusters

The evolution of the optical absorption spectrum of bimetallic Ag-Au monolayer-protected clusters（MPC）obtained by progressively doping Ag into the experimentally known structure of Au133（SR）52was predicted via rigorous time-dependent density-functional theory（TDDFT） calculations. In addition to monometallic Au133（SR）52and Ag133（SR）52species, 5 different（Ag-Au）133（SCH3）52homotops were considered with varying Ag content and site positioning, and their electronic structure and optical response were analyzed in terms of Projected Density Of States（PDOS）, the induced or transition electron density, and Transition Component Maps（TCM） at selected excitation energies. It was found that Ag doping led to the effects rather different from those encountered in bare metal clusters. And it was also observed that Ag doping could produce structured spectral features, especially in the 3–4 eV range but also in the optical region if Ag atoms were located in the sub-staple region, as rationalized by the accompanying electronic analysis. Additionally, Au doping into the staples of Ag-rich MPC also gave rise to a more homogeneous induced electron density. These findings show the great sensitivity of the electronic response of MPC nanoalloy systems to the exact location of the alloying sites.
