The aim of this study was to compare phenolic compounds contents between different positions within the crown and between collection periods, and to evaluate the tannin contents by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The collections were performed in Lavras, in the southern region of the Brazilian state Minas Gerais. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (factorial 3 × 4);the first factor being the position (base, middle, top);and the months, the second factor (February, May, September and December). We verified that the leaves of S. adstringens present higher total phenolic and tannin contents at the top (23.05% and 18.23%) and base (21.42% and 16.61%) of the crown, in May (25.79% and 20.85%) and September (25.57% and 20.50%), respectively. There was no difference in the residual phenol and flavonoid contents between the positions within the crown or in the months of collection. These facts suggest that within the crown and climatic changes may be one of the factors affecting phenol levels in Stryphnodendron adstringens.

Hepatocarcinogenesis, as other epithelial malignancies, has been proved to be a multistep process that, starting from mutagenic events, allows the transformed liver cell to evolve towards a more aggressive phenotype, characterized by the acquisition of migratory/invasive and stem-cell-like properties. Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)can originate from both mature hepatocytes and liver precursor/stem cells. Whatever its origin, a common feature of advanced-stage HCC is the reduction or lack of expression of master genes of epithelial/hepatocyte differentiation, i.e. members of the liver enriched transcription factors(LEFTs)family like HNF4α, and conversely an increased expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT)master genes, i.e. the transcriptional repressors belonging to the Snail family. Recently, it has emerged as members of these families are capable to directly repress each other and to regulate in opposite manner target genes involved in stemness and in hepatocyte differentiation, thus influencing cell outcome between epithelial/differentiated/poor aggressive and mesenchymal/undifferentiated/aggressive phenotype. Consequently, the restoration of LEFT functions in invasive HCC could represent an important goal for anti-cancer therapies. However, any strategy based on gene transfer needs to take in account the influence of micro-environmental factors in HCC tumor niche, like TGFb, responsible for shifting the described balance in tumor cell towards the acquisition of stem-cell like properties and invasiveness, through Snail/EMT induction and LEFTs downregulation. The presence of this cytokine, indeed, was shown to override both anti-EMT and tumor suppressor activity of the ectopically expressed HNF4α protein. In this review, the rationale to propose implementation of HCC gene therapy will be discussed.

Differential contributions of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor and GPI-anchored proteins (GPI-AP) to signalling remain poorly understood. Here we show that GPI-AP deficient murine clones produce on average 18 and 181-fold more IL-2 mRNA and protein, respectively, upon T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation, in a cell-intrinsic fashion. This phenotype is formally attributed to a mutation within the transferase complex that predicates the initial step in GPI-anchor biosynthesis. Conditional disruption of the transferase complex enabled the generation of primary GPI-AP deficient CD4+ T cells, which produce on average 10- and 23-fold more IL-2 mRNA and protein, respectively, upon TCR stimulation. Conditional disruption of the transamidase complex yields GPI-sufficient, GPI-AP deficient primary CD4+ T cells. TCR stimulation of these cells yields levels of IL-2 mRNA and protein ranging from 1 - 3 and 3-fold, respectively, of controls. These results provide the first evidence of a profound impact of GPI in the regulation of TCR signalling.

Purpose:Open globe eye injuries can have profound social and economic consequences. Here, we describe two cases of war and outdoor activity open globe eye injury where, despite a low OTS score,.current microsurgical technology allowed for a favorable *** report 1: A 33-year-old Libyan soldier had been treated for an open-globe grenade blast trauma to his left eye, which showed light perception and OTS score 2..He had undergone a lensectomy and PPV with silicone oil tamponade. Surgical treatment included scleral buckling,.cornea trephination, temporary Eckardt keratoprosthesis, PPV revision, intraocular lens(IOL) implantation, and corneal grafting. Six months later, his VA was improved to 20 / *** report 2:.A 35-year-old man presented with a corneal laceration in his left eye from a meat skewer,.with marked hypotony and LP..After primary corneal wound closure,.Bscan ultrasonography revealed massive vitreous hemorrhage(OTS score 2). The patient underwent open cataract extraction with IOL implantation, 23 gauge PPV, laser photocoagulation of the retinochoroidal laceration, and a gas tamponade. After three weeks,.the patient underwent a 2nd 23 G PPV due to a fibrinous reaction. Six month later, the patients exhibited 20 /25 ***:.These cases confirm that even for patients with a low OTS and poor visual prognosis,.an up-to-date surgery protocol may achieve visual results adequate for leading an autonomous daily life.

Phytosociological Survey of Weeds in Areas of Crop-Livestock Integration

The dynamics of the weeds in the areas of crop-livestock integration is constantly changing depending on the various uses of the area. This study identified and quantified the floristic composition of weeds in areas of integration of maize for silage with Urochloa ruziziensis cv. Common at different densities of grass (0, 4 and 10 kg·ha-1) to grazing of beef cattle. The experimental design was completely randomized. A square of side0.5 m(0.25 m2area) was launched 24 times in each study area. The survey was conducted at the grain filling stage of maize. The specie contained in each frame were identified and counted. The phytosociological survey identified 9 families of weeds in areas assessed, with 7 families in every area of integrated cultivation maize with Urochloa ruziziensis at densities of 10 kg·ha-1 and 4 kg·ha-1 and 8 families in the area of maize cultivated alone. The Asteraceae family was the most represented in number of species. Sida spp (Malvaceae) showed greater potential to cause damage to maize. Urochloa ruziziensis at planting density of 10 kg·ha-1 provided greater competition with weeds in the integration with maize.

Mammals can show conspicuous behavioral responses to thermal variation,including changes in movement *** used an integrative approach to understand how environmental temperature can drive the movement behavior of a mammal with low capacity for physiological thermoregulation,the giant anteater(Myrmecophaga tridactyla).We tracked 52 giant anteaters in 7 areas throughout the Brazilian *** estimated the distance moved,area used,use of forest areas,and mean environmental temperature for each monitoring day of each *** modeled these data with Mixed Structural Equations—considering the possible interactions between our variables and controlling for sex and body *** anteaters reduced displacement and increased forest use with decreasing environmental temperature,probably because of their low body heat *** is possible that they reduce distance moved and area used by reducing the duration of *** decreasing temperature,forest habitats become warmer than open ones,besides buffer rain and chilly *** displacement and using forests are important strategies to reduce body heat loss and the energetic costs of ***,decreasing movement can limit food access and,consequently,***,we highlight the importance of forests as thermal *** increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events,we showed the need to preserve forest patches to offer suitable conditions for tropical mammals’behavioral *** this context,policies favoring deforestation on Brazilian territory are especially ***,we emphasize the need of integrative approaches to understand the complex interactions between organisms and the environment.

Surgical Management of Two Simultaneously Occurring Epiphrenic Esophageal Diverticula

Among all diverticula of the esophagus, epiphrenic diverticula occur less frequently than those in the pharyngo-esophageal segment. Two simultaneously occurring diverticula in the epiphrenic esophagus are very rarely reported in the English literature. A 52-year-old woman had a 3-year history of troublesome dysphagia, heartburn, chest pain and cough. Initial investigation included a physical examination and a barium swallow, which showed the presence of two diverticula in the epiphrenic esophagus. Esophagoscopy confirmed the presence only of the lower diverticulum. The patient underwent a left thoracotomy, the esophagus was mobilised from the hiatus to the aortic arch. The necks of the diverticula were localised in the posterior wall and between them there was a bridge of circular muscular fibres, which was divided. Diverticulectomy over an intra-esophageal 54 F Maloney dilator was performed. The upper diverticulum was left intact because it disappeared after the bridge of esophageal muscles has been myotomized. A long myotomy was carried out, and a modified Belsey fundoplication was added. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient remains well at 10 years with no recurrence of symptoms.
