Aim： To study the immune-modulating and anti-oxidant effects of beta-glucan, papaya, lactoferrin, and vitamins C and E on sperm characteristics of patients with asthenoteratozoospermia associated with leucocytosis. Methods： Fifty-one patients referred to our Sterility Center for semen analysis were selected. Sperm parameters were assessed before and after patient＇s treatment with beta-glucan, lactoferrin, papaya, and vitamins C and E. DNA damage was assessed by the acridine orange test and sperm structural characteristics were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. Results： After 90 days of treatment, an increase in the percentage of morphologically normal sperm （17.0 ± 5.2 vs. 29.8 ± 6.5） and total progressive motility （19.0± 7.8 vs. 34.8 ± 6.8） were detected. Structural sperm characteristics as well as chromatin integrity were also improved after treatment. In terms of leukocyte concentration in seminal fluid, a significant reduction was recorded （2.2 ± 0.9 vs. 0.9± 0.2）. Conclusion： The treatment of an inflammatory process by the synergic action of immune modulators and anti-oxidants could protect sperm during maturation and migration, leading to improved sperm function. （Asian JAndrol 2008 Mar;. 10： 201-206）

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XGI) is a disease of unknown origin, most frequently described in the kidney and gallbladder; its localization in the colorectal tract is extremely rare. The extension of the typical inflammatory process to the surrounding tissues may lead to misdiagnosis as cancer. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman presenting to the Emergency department with pain, increased levels of α1 and α2 proteins and C-reactive protein (17.5 mg/dL; normal value 0-0.5), and a palpable mass, localized in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. A computed tomography scan showed a large right cecal mass with necrotic areas, local inflammation of retroperitoneal fat, and enlargement of local lymph nodes. Because of the high suspicion of colic abscess as well as malignancy and worsening of the clinical condition, the patient underwent right colectomy after 4 d of antibiotic treatment. Pathology revealed xanthogranulomatous inflammation involving the ileocecal valve. We review the reports of large bowel tract XGI in the international literature.

AIM： To re-evaluate the diagnostic criteria of insulin resistance hepatic iron overload based on clinical, biochemical and histopathological findings. METHODS： We studied 81 patients with hepatic iron overload not explained by known genetic and acquired causes. The metabolic syndrome （MS） was defined according to ATPⅢ criteria. Iron overload was assessed by liver biopsy. Liver histology was evaluated by Ishak＇s score and iron accumulation by deugnier＇s score; steatosis was diagnosed when present in ≥ 5% of hepatooltes. RESULTS： According to transferrin saturation levels, we observed significant differences in the amount of hepatic iron overload and iron distribution, as well as the number of metabolic abnormalities. Using Receiving Operating Curve analysis, we found that the presence of two components of the MS differentiated two groups with a statistically significant different hepatic iron overload （P 〈 0.0001）. Patients with ≥2 metabolic alterations and steatosis had lower amount of hepatic iron, lower transferrin saturation and higher sinusoidal iron than patients with 〈 2 MS components and absence of steatosis. CONCLUSION： In our patients, the presence of ≥ 2 alterations of the MS and hepatic steatosis was associated with a moderate form of iron overload with a prevalent sinusoidal distribution and a normal transferrin saturation, suggesting the existence of a peculiar pathogenetic mechanism of iron accumulation. These patients may have the typical dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome. By contrast, patients with transferrin saturation ≥ 60% had more severe iron overload, few or no metabolic abnormalities and a hemochromatosis-like pattern of iron overload.

The effect of temperature on the fluid-bed stability of three FCC catalysts has been analyzed through considerations on fluid-bed elasticity. Experimental findings on the effect of temperature on the elasticity modulus at minimum bubbling conditions, （E）mb, were analyzed using the hydrodynamic fluid-bed stability model developed by Foscolo and Gibilaro （1984） and adopting the interparticle-forces-based stability criterion developed by Mutsers and Rietema （1977）. For both models, the parameters which control changes in （E）mb with temperature are discussed, in order to establish the origin of the fluid-bed elasticity and analyze the ability of these models to discriminate between the relative importance of the hydrodynamic and interoarticle forces on the stability of the fluidized catalysts.

A study on variable charge soils （volcanic Italian and podzolic Scottish soils） was performed to investigate the influence of soil properties on the chemical composition of soil solution. Zinc speciation, bioavallability and toxicity in the soil solution were examined. The soils were spiked with increasing amounts of Zn （0, 100, 200, 400 and 1000 mg/kg） and the soil solutions were extracted using rhizon soil moisture samplers. The pH, total organic carbon （TOC）, base cations, anions, total Zn and free Zn^2＋ in soil solution were analysed. A rapid bioassay with the luminescent bacterium Escherichia coli HB 101 pUCD607 was performed to assess Zn toxicity. The influence of soil type and Zn treatments on the chemical composition of soil solution and on Zn toxicity was considered and discussed. Different trends of total and free Zn concentrations, base cations desorption and luminescence of E. coli HB 101 pUCD607 were observed. The soil solution extracted from the volcanic soils had very low total and free Zn concentrations and showed specific Zn^2＋/Ca^2＋ exchange. The soil solution from the podzolic soil had much higher total and free Zn concentrations and showed no evidence of specific Zn^2＋/Ca^2＋ exchange. In comparison with the subalkaline volcanic soils, the acidic podzol showed enhanced levels of toxic free Zn^2＋ and consequently stronger effects on E. coli viability.

AIM:To investigate the impact of laparoscopic colectomy on short and long-term outcomes in obese patients with colorectal ***:A total of 98 obese(body mass index>30kg/m2)patients who underwent laparoscopic(LPS)right or left colectomy over a 10 year period were identified from a prospective institutionally approved database and manually matched to obese patients who underwent open *** were selected to match for body mass index,site of primary disease,American Society of Anesthesiologists score,and year of surgery(±3 year).The parameters analyzed included age,gender,comorbid conditions,American Society of Anaesthesiologists class,diagnosis,procedure,and duration of operation,operative blood loss,and amount of homologous blood *** rate,intra and postoperative complications as were as reoperation rate,30 d and long-term morbidity rate were also *** continuous variables,the Student’s t test was used for normally distributed data the Mann-Whitney U test for nonnormally distributed *** Pearson’sχ2tests,or the Fisher exact test as appropriate,were used for ***:Conversion to open surgery was necessary in 13 of 98 patients(13.3%).In the LPS group,operative time was 29 min longer and blood loss was 78 mL lower when compared to open colectomy(P=0.03,P=0.0001,respectively).Overall morbidity,anastomotic leak and readmission rate did not significantly differ between the two groups.A trend toward a reduction of wound complications was observed in the LPS when compared to open group(P=0.09).In the LPS group,an earlier recovery of bowel function(P=0.001)and a shorter length of stay(P=0.03)were *** a median follow-up of 62(range 12-132)mo 23patients in the LPS group and 38 in the open group experienced long-term complications(LPS vs open,P=0.03).Incisional hernia resulted to be the most frequent long-term complication with a significantly higher occurrence in the open group when compared to the lapa

The majority of terrestrial vascular plants are capable of forming mutualistic associations with obligate biotrophic arbuscular mycorrhizal （AM） fungi from the phylum Glomeromycota. This mutualistic symbiosis provides carbohydrates to the fungus, and reciprocally improves plant phosphate uptake. AM fungal trans- porters can acquire phosphate from the soil through the hyphal networks. Nevertheless, the precise func- tions of AM fungal phosphate transporters, and whether they act as sensors or as nutrient transporters, in fungal signal transduction remain unclear. Here, we report a high-affinity phosphate transporter GigmPT from Gigaspora margarita that is required for AM symbiosis. Host-induced gene silencing of GigmPT ham- pers the development of G. margarita during AM symbiosis. Most importantly, GigmPT functions as a phos- phate transceptor in G. margarita regarding the activation of the phosphate signaling pathway as well as the protein kinase A signaling cascade. Using the substituted-cysteine accessibility method, we identified residues A146 （in transmembrane domain [TNID] IV） and Va1357 （in TMD VIII） of GigmPT, both of which are critical for phosphate signaling and transport in yeast during growth induction. Collectively, our results pro- vide significant insights into the molecular functions of a phosphate transceptor from the AM fungus G. margarita.
