The scientific community is continuously working to translate the novel biomedical techniques into effective medical treatments.CRISPR-Cas9 system(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats-9),commonly known as the“molecular scissor”,represents a recently developed biotechnology able to improve the quality and the efficacy of traditional treatments,related to several human diseases,such as chronic diseases,neurodegenerative pathologies and,interestingly,oral diseases.Of course,dental medicine has notably increased the use of biotechnologies to ensure modern and conservative approaches:in this landscape,the use of CRISPR-Cas9 system may speed and personalize the traditional therapies,ensuring a good predictability of clinical results.The aim of this critical overview is to provide evidence on CRISPR efficacy,taking into specific account its applications in oral medicine.

As the world strives to replace fossil fuels with clean energy e reflected by global surge in the number of electric vehicles e the environmental impact of mining all the lithium(Li)needed to enable such a transformation has become a problem in its own right.In South America,the biggest problem is the excessive use of water in Li extraction process in one of the driest areas in the world.Apart from causing severe friction over water rights between local communities and mining companies,it puts enormous pressure on the region's fragile and poorly understood wetland ecosystems.Wetlands are one of the most threatened ecosystems on the Earth,despite their great importance as habitats for a vast number of species and corresponding to one of the most productive environments.Present work is the outcome of an investigation on Laguna Santa rosa's(LSR)vulnerability resulting from ongoing metal mining operations in its surroundings that require a large volume of water extracted from local aquifers,in addition to a high evaporation rate in the area.This groundwater-dependent wetland will soon be further vulnerable with the commencement of water-intensive Li mining at Salar de Maricunga,with the extraction project already having an environmental impact study approved.Sustainability of this wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention and home to numerous wildlife species habiting this highland sector of the Andean Cordillera is vital for the associated ecosystems.The variation in the water surface area of LSR has been deciphered through the application of a Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper(TM)satellite image collection.This has been done both for the hydrological year 2016e2017 and 1993-2014 period.A decreasing trend in the water surface area of LSR,a hypersaline lake at the southern extreme of Salar de Maricunga,a salt flat in the Atacama Region of Chile,was observed through the study of satellite images between 1993 and 2014,showing shrinking of this wetland.However,this shrinking trend was punctuated by extreme rainfall and cons

Beneﬁcial microbes can improve soil health by promoting soil structure,nutrient cycling,and disease suppression.In addition,a wide array of rhizospheric microbes are responsible for producing metabolically active compounds including various types of plant growth regulators.So,microbial biodiversity studies could contribute to the improvement of agricultural practices in deprived areas,such as the Pampean semiarid region.The vast majority of studies conducted on endophytic microorganisms have focused on intensive crop legume species.In contrast,little attention has been paid to microorganisms of native legumes,whose ecology is not directly affected by human action.In this study,endophytic microorganisms isolated from root nodules of a selected native legume of the genus Rhynchosia were characterized.Viable isolates were studied with a focus on their plant growth-pro-moting rhizobacteria(PGPR)properties.Considering the edaphic characteristics of the Pampean semiarid region,the isolates obtained were evaluated for their ability to grow under three salt stress conditions(50,100,and 200 mM NaCl)and four different pH values(6,7,8,and 9).Based on their PGPR activities,the selected strains were phylogenetically grouped using BOX-PCR.The results showed great variability among the isolates in terms of the characteristics studied.Native legumes manifested a wide endophytic variability and remarkable perfor-mance in PGPR activities.We conclude that they could be used as potential bioinoculants for legume cultivation,an excellent alternative to the use of chemical fertilizers that currently pollute the environment.

With increasing life expectancy， neurodegenerative diseases have become one of the leading causes of ill-health in the elderly. Preventive strategies include following healthy diets， such as the Mediterranean diet， which is particularly rich in polyphenols， bioactive compounds with neuroprotective properties. The aim of this study was to assess the association of microbial phenolic metabolites (MPM) with cognition. This cross-sectional analysis was performed with 200 participants of the PREDIMED trial (Barcelona-Clinic recruitment center). A novel method based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was used to identify urinary MPM (protocatechuic acid， enterodiol glucuronide， enterolactone glucuronide， urolithin B glucuronide， and vanillic acid glucuronide)， and cognitive function was evaluated with neuropsychological tests. Multivariable-adjusted ordinary least squares regression was used to assess the associations between cognitive function and MPM， and a score was calculated as the weighted sum of MPM. A higher MPM score was associated with better frontal lobe function. Among individual metabolites， vanillic acid glucuronide was correlated with frontal cognitive performance. Participants with higher concentrations of vanillic acid glucuronide and urolithin B glucuronide obtained better scores in the Color Trail Test part 2. A higher score for urinary multi-MPM was associated with better frontal cognitive performance in an older Mediterranean population.

To the Editor:Hepatobiliary anatomical variations may increase the complexity of surgery with a relevant risk of iatrogenic lesions.Left-sided gallbladder(LSG)is a rare and little known condition whereby the viscus is located on the visceral surface of the left lobe of the liver and is often discovered unexpectedly during surgery.The position of the gallbladder over the liver pedicle and the simultaneous presence of variations in the liver vascularization are potentially associated to a challenging surgical dissection and consequently to an increased risk of morbidity.despite open approach remains an option in more complex procedures,cholecystectomy is usually performed with a minimally invasive technique,which is generally safe even in the rare case of an LSG,as long as a high level of awereness of anatomical variations and a careful surgical dissection are pursued.

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative chronic pathology,characterized by the loss of retinal ganglion cells(RGC),which leads to an irreversible vision field loss.The increased intraocular pressure(IOP)constitutes its main risk factor.Nowadays,the main treatments for glaucoma are focused on decreasing IOP;nevertheless,the progression of the disease continues,despite IOP control.This fact shows the existence of other factors that could contribute to the advance of glaucomatous neurodegeneration.The early diagnostics,the use of neuroprotective therapies,and knowledge of the pathological processes are the major challenges associated with the management of this disease.Different pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed to be responsible for RGC death,including oxidative stress,mitochondrial dysfunction,glutamate excitotoxicity,and neuroinflammation(Casson et al.,2012).

Under the present changing climate conditions and the observed temperature increase,it is of high importance to understand its effects on aquatic microbial life,and organisms’adaptations at the biochemical level.To adjust to temperature or salinity stress and avoid cell damage,organisms alter their degree of fatty acids(FAs)saturation.Thus,temperature is expected to have strong effects on both the quantity and quality of FAs in aquatic microorganisms.Here we review some recent findings about FAs sensitivity to climate change in contrasting environments.Overall,heat waves may induce changes in the relative abundance of polyunsaturated FAs(PUFA).However,the impact of the exposure to warming waters is different in temperate and polar environments.In cold marine waters,high concentration of omega-3(ω3)FAs such as eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)is promoted due to the activation of the desaturase enzyme.In this way,cells have enough energy to produce or activate antioxidant protection mechanisms and avoid oxidative stress due to heat waves.Contrastingly,under high irradiance and heat wave conditions in temperate environments,photosystems’protection is achieved by decreasing EPA concentration due to desaturase sensitivity.Essential FAs are transferred in aquatic food webs.Therefore,any alteration in the production of essential FAs by phytoplankton(the main source ofω3)due to climate warming can be transferred to higher trophic levels,with cascading effects for the entire aquatic ecosystem.
