Influence of Local Temporary Ischemia on Radiotherapy Effects

Here we summarize and discuss the body of information concerning mechanisms and regulation of local short-duration preconditioning that may accompany experimental radiation therapy. Based on the results of our previous studies in vivo we investigated possible impact of local temporary ischemia on the effectiveness of ionizing radiation-based anti-cancer therapy. We used total body-irradiated or abdomen only-irradiated healthy rats. Chosen blood parameters, changes in bone marrow cytological picture as well as histological picture of the small intestine were used as toxicity markers. We found a significant transient modification in lipid peroxides, triglycerides, uric acid concentration, SOD isoenzymes activity in the rat serum, increased numbers of small intestine crypts and suppression of bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes and polychromatic erythrocytes with micronuclei. No significant differences were observed in mnSOD isoenzyme activity in serum and in small intestine homogenates after local temporary ischemia, nor after irradiation, nor combined treatment. Some differences were observed in intestinal tissue CuZnSOD activities. Nevertheless, great variations in response to ischemia, radiation or combined treatment was noted concerning this parameter. Histological picture of the small intestine from ionizing radiation-treated rats has indicated a marked protection of crypt survival by local temporary ischemic preconditioning. Some of the ionizing radiation-caused toxic effects were reduced in animals treated with local ischemic preconditioning. Together, these results provide a new insight into development of a more effective anticancer therapy combining short-duration ischemia and ionizing radiation modality.

Gauss’ Problem, Negative Pell’s Equation and Odd Graphs

In this paper we present some results connected with still open problem of Gauss, negative Pell’s equation and some type *** particular we prove in the Theorem 1 that all real quadratic fields K=Q( ) , generated by Fermat’s numbers with d=Fm+1=22m+1+1,m≥2, have not unique factorization. Theorem 2 give a connection of the Gauss problem with primitive Pythagorean triples. moreover, in final part of our paper we indicate on some connections of the Gauss problem with odd graphs investigated by Cremona and Odoni in the papper [5].

Environmental mercury exposure, semen quality and reproductive hormones in Greenlandic Inuit and European men： a cross-sectional study

Several animal studies indicate that mercury is a male reproductive toxicant, but human studies are few and contradictory. We examined semen characteristics and serum levels of reproductive hormones in relation to environmental exposure to mercury. Blood and semen samples were collected from 529 male partners of pregnant women living in Greenland, Poland and Ukraine between may 2002 and February 2004. The median concentration of the total content of mercury in whole blood was 9.2 ng ml-1 in Greenland （0.2- 385.8 ng ml-1）, 1.0 ng m1-1 in Poland （0.2-6.4 ng ml-z） and 1.0 ng ml-I in Ukraine （0.2-4.9 ng ml-1）. We found a significantly positive association between the blood levels of mercury and serum concentration of inhibin B in men from Greenland （p=0.074, 95% confidence interval （CI）=0.021 to 0.126） and in an analysis including men from all three regions （p=0.067, 95% C1=0.024 to O. 110）. The association may be due to beneficial effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids （PUFAs）, which are contained in seafood and fish. No significant association （P〉O.05） was found between blood concentrations of mercury and any of the other measured semen characteristics （semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, morphology and motility） and reproductive hormones （free androgen index {FAI）, follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, luteinizing hormone （LH）, testosterone and LH xtestosterone） in any region. In conclusion, the findings do not provide evidence that environmental mercury exposure in Greenlandic and European men with median whole blood concentration up to 10 ng m1^-1 has adverse effects on biomarkers of male reproductive health.

Influenza and other respiratory viral infections account for 80%-90% of infectious pathologies. Influenza A (H5N1) virus has an apparent pneumotropism, and therefore the lung compartment of mononuclear phagocyte system plays an important role in antiviral immunity. Lung macrophages are active phagocytes expressing variety of antiviral factors. The investigation of morphofunctional status of lung macrophages and evaluation of their role in mammal antiviral response in a mouse model were performed within the study. methods: Light microscopy using standard hematoxylin-eosin, and Van-Gizon’s picrofuchsin staining. Immunohistochemistry using influenza A antigen marker specific primary antibodies, myeloperoxidase, cathepsin D, lysozyme, NO synthase, pro-inflammatory cytokines, cells of CD68 macrophage lineage, PCNA proliferative activity. morphometric and statistical analysis. Results: Influenza A virus antigen was detected in lung macrophages starting from day 1 to day 14 of infection which corresponds with the beginning of convalescence and may be suggestive of prolonged persistence of virus. On the one hand, the cytopathic effects of the virus lead to lung macrophages death mainly via apoptosis through activation of caspase cascade, including caspase-3 and caspase-9. On the other hand, the observed activation of PCNA proliferation marker, perhaps, allows to support the pool of lung macrophages not only by their recruitment from bone marrow but also by their proliferation in situ. The increase of mononuclear phagocyte system cells expressing antiviral factors depended on the stage of infection. In the early stage, there was an increase of number of cells expressing lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, cathepsin D, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) followed by the increase of number of macrophages expressing inducible NO synthase (iNOS), pro-inflammatory cytokines and interleukins.

There is an annual increase of influenza-related SARI cases in winter months. Despite the high relevance of this problem, influenza pathogenesis and the role of surfactant system and its SP-A (surfactant protein A) enzyme in antiviral defense remain poorly understood. SP-A activates macrophage m1 polarization and triggers an antiviral response due to the activation of T-cells and dendritic cells. Therefore, surfactant system is an important element of infection protection and a promising therapeutic target.

现有的鸟类谱系生物地理学研究多偏重于欧洲地区,对欧亚大陆广布种类的遗传格局比较及形成机制研究涉及较少。本论文对喜鹊(Pica pica)、大山雀(Parus major)及沼泽山雀(Poecilepalustris)的欧亚大陆整体格局进行比较并基于线粒体及核基因分析,结果显示,三种鸟类均呈现出欧亚大陆北部种群与亚洲东部种群间的深度谱系分歧,分化时间在第三纪晚期/第四纪早期。种群动态重建结果显示,三个物种各支系内种群扩张时间在0.03-0.13mYA,与欧亚大陆北部分支相比,亚洲东部、南部的分支经历了更长的种群历史或更早的种群扩张。

Safety and efficacy of Profermin~to induce remission in ulcerative colitis

AIm:To test the efficacy and safety of Profermin in inducing remission in patients with active ulcerative colitis(UC).mETHODS:The study included 39 patients with mild to moderate UC defined as a Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index(SCCAI)>4 andmedian:7.5),who were treated open-label with Profermintwice daily for 24 *** SCCAI was reported observer blinded via the ***:In an intention to treat(ITT)analysis,the mean reduction in SCCAI score was 56.5%.Of the 39 patients,24(62%)reached the primary endpoint,which was proportion of patients with≥50%reduction in *** secondary endpoint,the proportion of patients in remission defined as SCCAI≤2.5,was in ITT analysis reached in 18 of the 39 patients(46%).In a repeated-measure regression analysis,the estimated mean reduction in score was 5.0 points(95%CI:4.1-5.9,Pmated mean time taken to obtain half the reduction in score was 28 d(95%CI:26-30).There were no serious adverse events(AEs)or withdrawals due to *** was generally well ***:Profermin is safe and may be effective in inducing remission of active UC.

Deformation Nano-mechanisms Occurring on the Interface of Dissimilar materials Joined in Solid Phase by means of High Temperature Rolling

Nano-mechanisms of crystal lattice deformation on the interface of dissimilar materials (Cu-Nb), joined by vacuum rolling in solid phase under high temperature (950℃) were studied by means of high resolution electron microscopy. Input of carriers of rotation modes—nano-dipoles of partial disclinations and nano-twist disclinations in the form of double spirals in deformation mechanisms were analyzed. The role of these mechanisms in decrease of shear stability of the interface areas and in production of high-quality rolled metal is discussed.

Variations of VLF radio signals and atmospherics during the deep earthquake with m = 8.2 occurred on 24 may 2013 near Kamchatka peninsula

To detect seismic disturbances in the lower ionosphere, we have used the signals of very-lowfrequency radio transmitters and natural radio signals—electromagnetic emission of lightning discharges—atmospherics. On earlier results of observation of atmospherics, it was obtained that the earthquake effects are displayed as weight-hourly amplitude increases on the day of event or within 3 days after them. Possible earthquake precursors are also manifested as one-day (within one to several hours) increases in the amplitude of atmospherics on average 5 - 12 days before the event. Analysis shows that seismic effects in the amplitude of atmospherics have been observed in the case of sufficiently strong (magnitude m > 4.5) and not very deep (usually no deeper than 50 km) earthquakes. The effects of the events of the earthquake with magnitude of 8.2 occurring in the Sea of Okhotsk on 24.05.13 not far from the Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 609 km considered in this work have shown that even deep earthquakes may have precursors in the form of disturbances in the lower ionosphere.

Antibodies to Newcastle Disease Virus in Egg Yolks of Great Cormorant (<i>Phalacrocorax carbo</i>) at Qinghai Lake

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is not considered as cause of serious disease in humans. But, recent data make it clear that, under particular circumstances, it is indeed possible for NDV to cause severe human respiratory disease. Newcastle Disease infection has been reported in many bird species. Cormorants that inhabit at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are mainly represented by Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis), which is distributed mainly on the Qinghai Lake area. Cormorants are considered as one of the main NDV-reservoir. We conducted the study for the presence of antibodies to Newcastle disease virus by hemagglutination inhibition test in yolks. We got 50% of seropositive yolks to Newcastle disease virus. These results show that NDV circulates in the Qinghai Lake population of cormorants. We first used the technique of detection of antibodies to Newcastle disease virus in the egg yolk for study the circulation of the virus in cormorants and demonstrated its effectiveness. We should carefully monitor cases of pneumonia in the population of people living around the lake and assess the causes of the disease.
