Reversible lesions in the brain parenchyma in Wilson's disease confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging:earlier administration of chelating therapy can reduce the damage to the brain

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resolution of brain lesions in patients with Wilson’s disease during the long-term chelating therapy using magnetic resonance imaging and a possible signiifcance of the time latency between the initial symptoms of the disease and the introduction of this therapy. Initial magnetic resonance examination was performed in 37 patients with proven neurological form of Wilson’s disease with cerebellar, parkinsonian and dystonic presentation. Magnetic resonance reexamination was done 5.7 ± 1.3 years later in 14 patients. Patients were divided into： group A, where chelating therapy was initiated 〈 24 months from the ifrst symp-toms and group B, where the therapy started≥ 24 months after the initial symptoms. Symmetry of the lesions was seen in 100% of patients. There was a signiifcant difference between groups A and B regarding complete resolution of brain stem and putaminal lesions （P= 0.005 andP=0.024, respectively）. If the correct diagnosis and adequate treatment are not established less than 24 months after onset of the symptoms, irreversible lesions in the brain parenchyma could be ex-pected. Signal abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging might therefore, at least in the early stages, represent reversible myelinolisis or cytotoxic edema associated with copper toxicity.

Integer Codes Correcting Single Errors and Random Asymmetric Errors within a Byte

In optical networks without optical amplifiers(ONWOAs) photons may fade or fail to be detected, but new photons cannot be generated. Hence, under normal conditions, only 1 → 0 errors can occur. However, in some situations, the photodetector may generate a false 0 → 1 error. This mostly occurs in cases when the dark current is higher than specified. With this in mind, in this paper,the authors present a class of codes suitable for use in ONWOAs using self-synchronous *** presented codes can correct single errors and random asymmetric(1 → 0) errors within a b-bit byte. Unlike classical codes, these codes use integer and lookup table operations. As a result, their interleaved version, implemented on a dual-core 3.0 GHz processor, achieves the theoretical throughput above the operating rate of 10 G networks.

Evaluation of stability and functionality of BaCe_(1−x)In_(x)O_(3−δ) electrolyte in a wider range of indium concentration

The properties of BaCe_(1−x)In_(x)O_(3−δ) (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, _(0.25), 0.30, 0.35, and 0.40) as proton conducting electrolyte are examined. The dense electrolyte is formed after sintering at 1300 ℃ for 5 h in air. The samples with In content ≥ 25 mol% contain In_(2)O_(3) as a secondary phase. The highest total conductivity is around 5×10^(−3) S/cm for BaCe_(0.75)In_(0.25)O_(3−δ) in the wet hydrogen atmosphere at 700 ℃. After exposure to pure CO_(2) atmosphere at 700 ℃ for 5 h, the concentrations of at least 15 mol% In can completely suppress degradation of the electrolyte. The power density of Ni-BaCe_(0.75)In_(0.25)O_(3−δ)/BaCe_(0.75)In_(0.25)O_(3−δ)/LSCF-BaCe_(0.75)In_(0.25)O_(3−δ) fuel cell tested in wet hydrogen atmosphere reaches 264 mW/cm2 at 700 ℃. This result is an indication of stability and functionality of this electrolyte and its versatility in respect to type of fuel and performing environment.

The astronomic theory of climatic changes of Milutin Milankovich

Note： Items in Episodes＇ Classic Paper series normally analyze a single paper of major importance in the history of geosciences. The present contribution examines the book in which Milankovich summed up his life work. One of the few Serbian scientists of worldwide renown, Milutin Milankovich, was professor of applied mathematics at Belgrade University. He was born in 1879 in Dalj, near Osjek （today in Croatia）. He studied construction engineering in Vienna, graduated in 1902 and gained his PhD in 1904. After a brief but successful engineering practice in Vienna, he moved to Belgrade University. During his thirty years of work there he produced： a mathematical theory of the Earth＇s climate （1920）; his astronomic theory of climatic changes （1930, 1938, 1938a）; and his theory of the secular wandering of the Earth＇s poles （1933）. He retired in 1955 and died in Belgrade in 1958.

Potential of contemporary earth-sheltered buildings to achieve Plus Energy status in various European climates during the heating season

This study investigates the potential of contemporary Earth-Sheltered Buildings to contribute to sustainable societies by achieving Plus Energy Building status during the heating *** buildings analyzed are intended to house a four-member family(102.5 m^(2)).The house is equipped with a ground source heat pump,geothermal vertical probes,floor heating panels,an energy recovery ventilator,and building-integrated photovoltaic panels installed on the exposed building *** numerical analysis(using EnergyPlus software)was carried out for nine European sites covering five different climatic zones(namely:southern,Atlantic,continental,alpine,and northern climate)and three latitude belts spanning Europe from south to *** above 65°N(northern and alpine climate)could not achieve Plus Energy status with 20% efficient *** 15% efficient BIPVs,the building above 59°N(northern climate)was incapable of achieving this as *** the monthly time step,the buildings in the southern and Atlantic climates with 15% efficient BiPVs were able to produce an energy surplus every month,as was the building in theAlps with 20% efficientBIPVs.

Error bounds of a quadrature formula with multiple nodes for the Fourier-Chebyshev coefficients for analytic functions

Three kinds of effective error bounds of the quadrature formulas with multiple nodes that are generalizations of the well-known Micchelli-Rivlin quadrature formula, when the integrand is a function analytic in the regions bounded by confocal ellipses, are given. A numerical example which illustrates the calculation of these error bounds is included.

Weighted Sum of Gray Gases Model Optimization for Numerical Investigations of Processes inside Pulverized Coal-Fired Furnaces

The effects of the number of significant figures （NSF） in the interpolation polynomial coefficients （IPCs） of the weighted sum of gray gases model （WSGM） on results of numerical investigations and WSGM optimization were investigated. The investigation was conducted using numerical simulations of the processes inside a pulverized coal-fired furnace. The radiative properties of the gas phase were determined using the simple gray gas model （SG）, two-term WSGM （W2）, and three-term WSGM （W3）. Ten sets of the IPCs with the same NSF were formcd for every weighting coefficient in both W2 and W3. The average and maximal relative difference values of the flame temperatures, wall temperatures, and wall heat fluxes were determined. The investigation showed that the results of numerical investigations were affected by the NSF unless it exceeded certain value. The increase in the NSF did not necessarily lead to WSGM optimization. The combination of the NSF （CNSF） was the necessary requirement for WSGM optimization.
