Shell geometric morphometrics in Biomphalaria glabrata (Mollusca： Planorbidae) uninfected and infected with Schistosoma mansoni

Freshwater planorbid mollusks belonging to the genus Biomphalaria act as intermediate hosts for Schistosoma mansoni, the etiological agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis, in the neotropical Region. Identification ofBiomphalaria spp. are carried out based on morphological characters, and the Schistosoma infection are determined by the presence of cercariae （verified through microscope preparation and mounting）. Recently, the geometric morphometrics has proven to be a useful tool for determining shape differences in disease vectors arthropods. Due to this, we used geometric morphometrics to determine Biomphalaria glabrata shell differences （shape and size） between uninfected and infected specimens. We digitalized 12 anatomical points over the shell left side （from umbilicus to the last whorl） by combining type I and II landmarks and sliding semilandmarks; the coordinates were aligned by generalized Procrustes analysis. Principal component analyses were implemented for examining main variation axes, and discriminant analysis for testing group membership significance. We found significant separation between infected and uninfected shell conformation. All specimens were 100% correctly classified. The main differences occur in the peristome. The Kruskal-Wallis test finds significant differences in shell isometric size among infected and uninfected specimens. These findings correspond to other studies of traditional morphometrics, that infected snails showed the reduction in shell size in contrast to those uninfected specimens

Efficacy and safety of XEn 45 gel stent alone or in combination with phacoemulsification in advanced open angle glaucoma patients: 1-year retrospective study

AIM:To assess the effectiveness of the XEn 45 gel stent,either alone or combined with cataract surgery,in advanced stage open angle glaucoma(OAG)***:Retrospective and single-center study conducted on consecutive OAG patients who underwent a XEn 45 gel stent implantation surgery,between July 2017 and September *** primary efficacy end-point was the mean intraocular pressure(IOP)reduction at the end of the follow-up *** was defined as an IOP reduction of at least 20%and an IOP value≤18 mm Hg without(complete)or with(qualified)hypotensive ***:Seventy-four patients(80 eyes)were included in the *** the overall study sample,XEn implant significantly reduced IOP from 21.0(19.8 to 22.1)mm Hg at baseline to 9.3(8.2 to 10.4),10.7(9.6 to 11.9),13.4(12.2 to 14.7),14.5(13.6 to 15.4),14.7(13.8 to 15.6),and 14.7(13.9 to 15.4)mm Hg at 1 d,1 wk,1,3,6,and 12 mo of follow-up,respectively(Pn the overall study population,at the end of the study the mean IOP reduction was 27.4%(23.3%to 31.5%).Adjusted IOP reduction was similar in XEn and XEn+phacoemulsification groups[30.0(23.4 to 36.4)mm Hg vs 24.8(18.4 to 31.2)mm Hg,respectively,P=0.2939].At the last follow-up visit,52(65.0%)eyes were considered success,29(36.3%)eyes as complete success and 23(28.7%)as qualified *** number of hypotensive medications was significantly reduced from 2.8(2.7 to 3.0)at baseline to 1.1(0.8 to 1.3),Pnalysis did not find any difference in the success rate between XEn and XEn+PHACO,mean hazard ratio 0.56,95%CI 0.26 to 1.23;P=*** was performed in 7(8.8%)eyes at months 1(n=3);3(n=2);4(n=1)and 11(n=1).Eleven(13.8%)eyes presented adverse ***:XEn implant,either alone or in combination with phacoemulsification,significantly reduced the IOP and the number of hypotensive medications in patients with OAG in advanced stage.

We propose the usage of formal languages for expressing instances of nP-complete problems for their application in polynomial transformations. The proposed approach, which consists of using formal language theory for polynomial transformations, is more robust, more practical, and faster to apply to real problems than the theory of polynomial transformations. In this paper we propose a methodology for transforming instances between nP-complete problems, which differs from Garey and Johnson's. Unlike most transformations which are used for proving that a problem is nP-complete based on the nP-completeness of another problem, the proposed approach is intended for extrapolating some known characteristics, phenomena, or behaviors from a problem A to another problem B. This extrapolation could be useful for predicting the performance of an algorithm for solving B based on its known performance for problem A, or for taking an algorithm that solves A and adapting it to solve B.

AIM： To compare the cleansing quality of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and sodium phosphate with different schedules of administration, and to evaluate whether the timing of the administration of bowel preparation affects the detection of polyps. METHODS： One hundred and seventy-seven consecutive outpatients scheduled for colonoscopy were randomized in one of four groups to receive polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution or oral sodium phosphate with two different timing schedules. Quality of cleansing, polyp detection, and tolerance were evaluated. RESULTS： Patients receiving polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the same day as the colonoscopy, obtained good to excellent global cleansing scores more frequently than patients who received polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the day prior to the procedure （P 〈 0.001）. Flat lesions, but not fiat adenomas, were more frequent in patients prepared on the same day （P = 0.02）. COnCLUSIOn： The quality of colonic cleansing and the detection of fiat lesions are significantly improved when the preparation is taken on the day of the colonoscopy.

Carbon nanodots (CnDs) with enriched periphery carboxylic groups were synthesized using the low-cost starting material glucose. The obtained CnDs were assembled onto Au electrodes following one of two strategies: covalent bonding, using cystamine as a cross-linker, or by drop-casting. The immobilized CnDs were covalently modified with the phenothiazine Azure A via electron transfer chemistry; in particular via reactions with aryl diazonium salts. The reaction mechanism for the diazonium functionalization of CnDs was investigated. Spectroelectrochemistry experiments confirmed that electrografting, rather than adsorption, governs the functionalization of CnDs with Azure A. Finally, the application of these CnDs as electrocatalysts for the oxidation of hydrazine was demonstrated.
