<i>N</i>-Acetylated Gemini Surfactants: Synthesis, Surface-Active Properties, Antifungal Activity, and Ecotoxicity Bioassays

A series of N-acetylated cationic gemini surfactants (3a-e) having dimeric structures derived from tertiary amines were synthesized. Their antifungal potency and surface properties were determined. It also studied the acute toxicity of the molecule with the best performance and the best water solubility (3e) through chlorella vulgaris and Daphnia magna bioassays. The results were compared to those obtained for a commercially available reference compound 2-(thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole (TcMTB). Parameters such as surface tension (ϒcMc), critical micelle concentration (cMc), surface excess concentration (Γ), and area per molecule (A) were determined. The resulting values indicated that the five gemini surfactants are characterized by good surface-active and self-aggregation properties. All surfactants were tested to evaluate their antifungal activity. Six fungal strains were used to conduct the study. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIc) value was measured by the fungal growth inhibition. The results of the MIcs were compared with two commercially available reference compounds (Fluconazole and TcMTB). The least active molecule was 3e, but 3b and 3d were found to be the most potent compounds with a similar activity for all strains. candida albicans was the most sensitive one. In contrast, Aspergillus niger was resistant. Ecotoxicity of gemini 3e was assessed: the commercial formulation (TcMTB) was between three and four orders of magnitude more toxic than the gemini one for the biological species tested.

In this article,we explored the role of adipose tissue,especially mesenteric adipose tissue and creeping fat,and its association with the gut microbiota in the pathophysiology and progression of crohn’s disease(cD).cD is a form of inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract,influenced by genetic predisposition,gut microbiota dysbiosis,and environmental *** microbiota plays a crucial role in modulating immune response and intestinal inflammation and is associated with the onset and progression of ***,visceral adipose tissue,particularly creeping fat,a mesenteric adipose tissue characterized by hypertrophy and fibrosis,has been implicated in cD pathogenesis,inflammation,and *** bacteria from the gut microbiota may translocate into mesenteric adipose tissue,contributing to the formation of creeping fat and influencing cD *** creeping fat may be a protective barrier against bacterial invasion,its expansion can damage adjacent tissues,leading to *** gut microbiota through interventions such as fecal microbiota transplantation,probiotics,and prebiotics has shown potential in managing ***,more research is needed to clarify the mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis,creeping fat,and cD progression and develop targeted therapies for microbiota modulation and fat-related complications in patients with cD.

Genome-wide screening and transcriptional profile analysis of desaturase genes in the European corn borer moth

Acyl-coenzyme A （Acyl-coA） desaturases play a key role in the biosynthesis of female moth sex pheromones. Desaturase genes are encoded by a large multigene family, and they have been divided into five subgroups on the basis of biochemical functionality and phylogenetic affinity. In this study both copy numbers and transcriptional levels of desaturase genes in the European corn borer （EcB）, Ostrinia nubilalis, were investigated. The results from genome-wide screening of EcB bacterial artificial chromosome （BAc） library indicated there are many copies of some desaturase genes in the genome. An open reading frame （ORF） has been isolated for the novel desaturase gene EcB ezi-A11~ from EcB gland complementary DNA and its functionality has been analyzed by two yeast expression systems. No functional activities have been detected for it. The expression levels of the four desaturase genes both in the pheromone gland and fat body of EcB and Asian corn borer （AcB）, O. furnacalis, were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In the EcB gland, All is the most abundant, although the amount of A14 is also considerable. In the AcB gland, A14 is the most abundant and is 100 times more abundant than all the other three combined. The results from the analysis of evolution of desaturase gene transcription in the EcB, AcB and other moths indicate that the pattern of A 11 gene transcription is significantly different from the transcriptional patterns of other desaturase genes and this difference is tied to the underlying nucleotide c.mposition bias of the genome.

Early vs late oral nutrition in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis admitted to a medical intensive care unit

BAcKGROUND Diabetic ketoacidosis(DKA) has an associated mortality of 1% to 5%. Upon admission, patients require insulin infusion and close monitoring of electrolyte and blood sugar levels with subsequent transitioning to subcutaneous insulin and oral nutrition. No recommendations exist regarding the appropriate timing for initiation of oral *** To assess short-term outcomes of oral nutrition initiated within 24 h of patients being admitted to a medical intensive care unit(MIcU) for *** A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted at a single academic medical center. The patient population consisted of adults admitted to the MIcU with the diagnosis of DKA. Baseline characteristics and outcomes were compared between patients receiving oral nutrition within(early nutrition group) and after(late nutrition group) the first 24 h of admission. The primary outcome was 28-d mortality. Secondary outcomes included 90-d mortality, MIcU and hospital lengths of stay(LOS), and time to resolution of *** There were 128 unique admissions to the MIcU for DKA with 67 patientsreceiving early nutrition and 61 receiving late nutrition. Octogenarian liver grafts:Is their use for transplant currently justified?

AIMTo analyse the impact of octogenarian donors in liver *** present a retrospective single-center study, performed between November 1996 and March 2015, that comprises a sample of 153 liver transplants. Recipients were divided into two groups according to liver donor age: recipients of donors ≤ 65 years (group A; n = 102), and recipients of donors ≥ 80 years (group B; n = 51). A comparative analysis between the groups was performed. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean values and SD, and qualitative variables as percentages. Differences in properties between qualitative variables were assessed by χ2 test. comparison of quantitative variables was made by t-test. Graft and patient survivals were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier ***, 3 and 5-year overall patient survival was 87.3%, 84% and 75.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 88.2%, 84.1% and 66.4%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.748). One, 3 and 5-year overall graft survival was 84.3%, 83.1% and 74.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 84.3%, 79.4% and 64.2%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.524). After excluding the patients with hepatitis c virus cirrhosis (16 in group A and 10 in group B), the 1, 3 and 5-year patient (P = 0.657) and graft (P = 0.419) survivals were practically the same in both groups.
