Potential of video games for the promotion of neuroadaptation to multifocal intraocular lenses: a narrative review

Multifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs) are currently usually implanted for the treatment of cataracts because they have been proved to be superior to monofocal IOLs with respect to spectacle independence. In turn, they are associated with a higher prevalence of dysphotopsia symptoms that is one of the most common causes of patient dissatisfaction. Neuroadaptation seems to play a major role in the optimal adaptation to multifocal IOLs. In this context, the development of strategies that facilitate the neuroadaptation process to multifocality might be an effective strategy to reduce patients' dissatisfaction. Video games have been proved to be effective for the improvement of visual acuity and for the promotion of neuroplasticity in elderly subjects and other populations with cortical-related visual impairment. This narrative review highlights the physiological potential of video games as a perceptual strategy to improve visual acuity and promote neuroplasticity in patients using multifocalIOLs, although research is still needed to confirm these benefits in this specific population, with only one comparative study to this date providing evidence of them.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)is defined by recurrent and troublesome heartburn and effortless regurgitation or by the specific complications of this condition—that is,esophagitis,esophageal peptic strictures,and Barrett esophagus.1Although GERD is caused by gastric contents'reaching the esophagus,gastric juices can also reach other anatomical locations(pharynx,mouth,larynx,and airways),leading to(or worsening)extra-esophageal conditions(notably asthma)or symptoms(e.g.,wheezing,cough).1 Together with obesity,GERD is the main risk factor for gastroesophageal malignancies.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy,including chronic hypertension,gestational hypertension,and preeclampsia,are the most common complications in pregnant women,affecting approximately 15%of pregnancies.[1,2]Hemolysis,elevated liver enzymes,and low platelet count(HELLP syndrome)can occur in 0.2%-0.6%of all pregnancies,and 10%-15%of patients are diagnosed with preeclampsia.[3,4]Among its severe complications,liver hematoma is remarkable and may lead to liver *** identification of HELLP syndrome is crucial for proper therapeutic management and to avoid fatal outcomes[4,5]since when a hepatic hematoma occurs,the risk of rupture increases to 12%.[3,5]

Purpose: During catheter angiogram (CA) there is momentary increase in intravascular volume and pressure due to intra-arterial injection that can potentially cause vascular distention at the stenotic site, whereas on CT angiogram (CTA) is unlikely due to intravenous administration. Methods: CA and CTA of the carotid artery from 29 patients were retrospectively studied. CA and CTA were obtained for each patient. Curved sagittal MPRs mirroring the carotid artery on CA were used to measure the diameter at stenosis and at the distal lumen. Mural plaque calcium content was graded on axial CTAs. Results: Accounting for repeated measurements, the likelihood that the lumen diameter from CA will be larger than CTA was higher at stenosis than distal to it but the difference in lumen diameters at stenosis was similar to CTA. There is insufficient evidence that intra-arterial hand-injection during CA leads to underestimation of the degree of stenosis. Percentage stenosis using the NASCET criteria differed between the 3 measurements, post hoc analysis showed significant difference between CA and axial CTA (p p > 0.99). The difference in lumen diameter did not depend on our calcium grading (p = 0.484). Conclusions: There is insufficient evidence to suggest that intra-arterial hand-injection contributes to vessel distention and underestimation of percent stenosis during CA in this study. Mural plaque calcium does not affect the degree of stenosis on CTA.

Socially-responsible business and ethical behavior of companies have been of interest to academia and practice for decades, but the focus has almost exclusively been on large corporations, while small and medium-sized enterprises （SMEs） have not received as much attention （Hammann, et al., 2009）. Worthington, et al （2006） recognized the need to encourage socially-responsible business practices among the 90 per cent or more of the world＇s businesses that are classified as SMEs. Perrini, et al （2007） found that size explains the differences in firms＇ willingness to define and implement such specific corporate social responsibility （CSR） strategies, while Murillo and lozano （2006） concluded that it still remains to be explored whether manufacturing companies tend to apply CSR more extensively, or whether businesses oriented to other business have a tendency to incorporate CSR into their management patterns to a higher degree. Moreover, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, in her 7 June, 2002 speech, recognized the importance of Chinese-Filipinos in helping improve the Philippine economy, and yet, not much research had been done on this sub-sector. Thus, this paper focuses on the effect of finn size and finn activities on the social responsibility practices of selected 30 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises （MSMEs） in Metro Manila which are owned by Chinese-Filipinos. Survey questionnaires and interview were used for gathering data, while a correlations test was used to analyze the data and to conclude whether finn size and finn activities have an effect on the sampled companies＇ CSR practices.
